The Effect Of Conditional Volatility, Skewness, And Excess Kurtosis On Interest Rates, Sarah H. Al Talafha May 2022

The Effect Of Conditional Volatility, Skewness, And Excess Kurtosis On Interest Rates, Sarah H. Al Talafha

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines the lognormality assumption of per capita, real consumption growth, which is a common assumption in asset pricing models. We found that shocks to household consumption growth are persistent, negatively skewed, and have excess kurtosis. Therefore, we revisited the fundamental relation between expected growth and the real risk-free rate, assuming a non-Gaussian distribution of consumption growth, and found a robust positive association between real consumption growth and real risk-free interest rate, and a negative relationship between macroeconomic uncertainty and real rates, although less in magnitude, which is consistent with both intertemporal smoothing and precautionary savings. This paper offers …

The Relationship Between Political Contributions And Federal Earmarks And The Impact Of State-Owned Enterprises On U.S. Competition, Tahsin I. Huq May 2022

The Relationship Between Political Contributions And Federal Earmarks And The Impact Of State-Owned Enterprises On U.S. Competition, Tahsin I. Huq

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

With the reintroduction of hard earmarks in the U.S., it is essential to understand the factors that drive earmark receipt. Legislative earmarks have historically represented a significant source of revenue for several firms. We examine the relationship between political expenditure, federal earmarks, and subsequent firm performance. Using a sample of earmarks from 2008-2010 Appropriations bills, we demonstrate that Political Action Committee (PAC) contributions by firms to Senators and Representatives strongly predict both the size and number of earmarks directed to these companies. We also show that PAC contributions to a member of Congress increase the probability that a politician writes …

How Student Athletes Can Profit From Their Name, Image, And Likeness Rights, Ryan Bartholow May 2022

How Student Athletes Can Profit From Their Name, Image, And Likeness Rights, Ryan Bartholow

Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses

A new mixture of state laws and NCAA rules have provided athletes with varying degrees of new protections and opportunities to make money by selling their NIL rights (Murphy, 2021). However, these new NIL rights do not come with any sort of guide on how to begin making a profit. According to Christovich (2021), wealthy D-I schools have spent the past year building their NIL programs and hiring consultants to educate their athletes on the new NIL rules. There are many D-II and D-III schools that may not have the finances available to educate their athletes on how to return …

How The Financial Services Industry Is Utilizing Social Media To Expand Their Client Base, Kristen Stewart May 2022

How The Financial Services Industry Is Utilizing Social Media To Expand Their Client Base, Kristen Stewart

Marketing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Social media is becoming an increasingly important aspect of all companies’ marketing strategies. It is almost imperative for companies to advertise through social media if they want to have a fair chance of reaching the younger generation. In fact, “the majority (97%) of Gen Z consumers say they now use social media as their top source of shopping inspiration; 65% say they use social media to find entertaining content; and 61% of them are specifically interested in watching more video content” (Kastenholz, 2021). This proves that social media can make a significant and lasting impact on a company’s success. Social …

A Machine Learning Approach To Stochastic Optimal Control, Pablo Ever Avalos May 2022

A Machine Learning Approach To Stochastic Optimal Control, Pablo Ever Avalos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Merton's portfolio optimization problem is a well-renowned problem in financial mathematics which seeks to optimize the investment decision for an investor. In the simplest situation, the market consists of a risk-less asset (i.e. a bond) that pays back a relatively low interest rate, and a risky asset (i.e. a stock) that follows a geometric Brownian motion. The optimal allocation strategy of the investor's wealth is found by optimizing the expected utility along the stochastic evolution of the market. This thesis focuses on several different applications of this optimization problem. We look at pre-constructed analytical solutions and showcase the results. We …

Essays On Employee Litigaiton Risk, Adrian Tippit

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the valuation effects of a legislative shock to employee litigation rights, as well as the mediating effects of pre-existing employee rights. The first chapter examines the valuation effects of the Passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, an act that increases employee litigation rights related to demographic-based discriminatory compensation filings. We find that firms with relatively fewer women in their workforce exhibit a significant negative three-day abnormal return of 0.61% around the passage of the Lilly Act. In contrast, we find that firms with relatively more women in their workforce do not exhibit a significant abnormal return. …

In a commentary, SMU Assistant Professor of Finance (Education) and Director of Citi-Foundation SMU Financial Literacy Programme for Young Adults Aurobindo Ghosh shared his views on the metaverse and the opportunities to make money in the metaverse economy. While pointing out that lowering the cost of service and standardising service, as a virtual banking establishment, might increase customer experience for financial services, Asst Prof Ghosh cited a 2021 survey conducted by the Citi-Foundation SMU Financial Literacy Programme which found evidence that financial inclusion among young adults reduces impediments to banking like access to branches and documentation requirements.

Inflation Expectations Of Households And The Upgrading Channel, Sumit Agarwal, Yeow Hwee Chua, Changcheng Song May 2022

Inflation Expectations Of Households And The Upgrading Channel, Sumit Agarwal, Yeow Hwee Chua, Changcheng Song

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Motivated by the evidence that households purchased better quality goods across time in Singapore, we use a survey experiment to study the relationship between consumption upgrading and households’ beliefs about inflation. We find that providing price information on better-quality products will lead to higher inflation expectations. The effects on inflation expectations are smaller when price information on both higher- and lower-quality products is made available, suggesting that product replacement increases inflation expectations. Additional tests show that our results are not driven by mixing price with quality or numeracy. Our findings highlight the relationship between product replacement, product variety, and inflation …

Can Shorts Predict Returns? A Global Perspective, Ekkehart Boehmer, Zsuzsa R. Huszar, Yanchu Wang, Xiaoyan Zhang, Xinran Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using multiple short-sale measures, we examine the predictive power of short sales for future stock returns in 38 countries from July 2006 to December 2014. We find that the days-to-cover ratio and the utilization ratio measures have the most robust predictive power for future stock returns in the global capital market. Our results display significant cross-country and cross-firm differences in the predictive power of alternative short-sale measures. The predictive power of shorts is stronger in countries with nonprohibitive short sale regulations and for stocks with relatively low liquidity, high shorting fees, and low price efficiency.

A Black-Scholes User's Guide To The Bachelier Model, Jaehyuk Choi, Minsuk Kwak, Chyng Wen Tee, Yumeng Wang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

To cope with the negative oil futures price caused by the COVID-19 recession, global commodity futures exchanges switched the option model from Black-Scholes to Bachelier in April 2020. This study reviews the literature on Bachelier's pioneering option pricing model and summarizes the practical results on volatility conversion, risk management, stochastic volatility, and barrier options pricing to facilitate the model transition. In particular, using the displaced Black-Scholes model as a model family with the Black-Scholes and Bachelier models as special cases, we not only connect the two models but also present a continuous spectrum of model choices.

Market Manipulation Around Seasoned Equity Offerings: Evidence Prior To The Global Financial Crisis Of 2007-2009, Charlie Charoenwong, Kuan Yong David Ding, Ping Wang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Since the adoption of the SEC’s Rule 10b-21 in 1988, many researchers have been concerned over the effectiveness of short sales constraints in preventing manipulative trading in the derivatives market. We analyze whether options can be used as synthetic short sale instruments to manipulate stock prices before a seasoned equity offer. Due to the existence of strict short sales constraints in the equity market and market makers’ anticipation of manipulative trading, it would be very costly for a manipulator to drive stock prices down artificially either by short selling in the equity market or by using synthetic short sales in …

The Optimal Cross-Border Network Structure Of Chinese Commercial Banks — An Analysis Based On The New Structural Economics And New Structural Finance Theory, Hongjie Gu

Fordham Dissertations and Theses

With the unprecedented global economic integration, the internationalization of commercial banks (CBs) in a country or region can be closely related to the stability and prosperity of the world economy. The internationalization of Chinese CBs has turned out a non-negligible trend, particularly the big four state-owned CBs. The acceleration of “going global” has enabled Chinese CBs to exert an increasing influence on the world economy. This dissertation applies New Structural Economics theory (NSE) through the “one analysis and three inductions” methodology to analyze the evolution of the cross-border network structure adopted by CBs in the internationalization process. In this dissertation, …

An emerging social pressure of being environmentally and socially responsible has been an increasingly popular concept through the past decades. Socially responsible investing (SRI), or environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing is an investment strategy which aims to flood publicly trading companies with capital who operate according to specific morals and standards. Studies has proven investors who factor ESG into their portfolio strategies often see greater return, as firms are able to create more long-term value. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of ESG activity and ratings on the financial performance of firms in the energy …

Rise Of Passive Investing: Impacts On Equity Market Functionality, Ryan Donovan Apr 2022

Rise Of Passive Investing: Impacts On Equity Market Functionality, Ryan Donovan

Honors Projects in Finance

Most investments into equity markets can be categorized into two general strategies: active investments and passive investments. These strategies impact equity markets in different ways. Over the past few decades, market participants have witnessed a radical shift from active management to passive management. This paper reviews how this shift impacts market dynamics generally, and liquidity and comovement effects, in particular. Robust statistical analysis of total passive domestic equity assets under management (AUM), individual security, and market index data demonstrates that dramatic increases in passive investment flows correlates with decreased broad market liquidity and increased security-index comovement for securities in the …

The Impact Of Female Leadership On Lgbtq-Supportive Policies, Samantha Bove Apr 2022

The Impact Of Female Leadership On Lgbtq-Supportive Policies, Samantha Bove

Honors Projects in Finance

In the past two decades, gender inequality in c-suites has received a large amount of attention. Thus, the number of women in top management roles has increased substantially. However, the corporate sector has also neglected other marginalized groups, specifically, members of the LGBTQ community. These individuals are important employees and previous literature has established the benefits, both financial and otherwise, that the presence of LGBTQ supportive policies have on American corporations. In this paper, I examine if the presence of women CEOs influences the LGBTQ policies that are implemented in that firm. This will be analyzed using an OLS regression …

How Could Venture Capitalists Improve Their Performance At Fund Management Level Via Better Allocating Their Financial And Human Capitals - A Cross-Fund Approach, Fei Han

Dissertations

Venture capitalists’ performance has been studied at the levels of portfolio company and fund. But no similar study at the fund management entity level has been documented. This study fills in the gap to examine the drivers of the venture capitalists’ performance at the fund management entity level. This study uses the capital allocation theory to develop five hypotheses on its performance. Each of them embodies an aspect of the feature of capital allocation in the venture capital investment process. With an expanded concept of capital for capital allocation, this study examines the allocation of both the financial capital and …

Anatomy Of The Short Squeeze: Using Technical And Statistical Analysis To Forecast Price Volatility, Gianni Demerski Apr 2022

Anatomy Of The Short Squeeze: Using Technical And Statistical Analysis To Forecast Price Volatility, Gianni Demerski

Honors Projects in Finance

A short squeeze is a phenomenon in the stock market that occurs when the price of a security surges drastically higher over a short period of time. The main known cause of a short squeeze is due to short sellers aggressively covering their positions creating a short-term artificial increase in the demand for a given stock. The purpose of the present study is to determine whether the stock return volatility of a short squeeze can be forecasted using variables such as trade volume, price patterns, short interest, market capitalization, and a stock’s outstanding shares. The study attempts to determine which …

Business Financing: Bonds, Joshua Davis Apr 2022

Business Financing: Bonds, Joshua Davis

Honors Theses

For my thesis, I researched information on financial bonds to contribute to a developing college textbook written by Dr. Bret Wagner called “Fundamentals of Business”. After having gathered the research, I then began writing to match the style in which Dr. Wagner had written the other chapters. Overall, this was a completely different experience for me as I have done research plenty of times before but opening my brain to a creative writing aspect and deliberating the research I had gathered into a form that would be consumed by future young adults was both exciting and difficult. I had to …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Purpose:

The transformation of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) from a regional health crisis in a Chinese city to a global pandemic has caused severe damage not only to the natural and economic lives of human beings but also to the financial markets. The rapidly pervading and daunting consequences of COVID-19 spread have plummeted the stock markets to their lowest levels in many decades especially in South Asia. This concern motivates us to investigate the stock markets’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic in four South Asian countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. This study aims to investigate the causal impact of …

Footballer Valuations: Valuing World-Class Football Players Against Transfer Fees, Louis Diblasi

Honors Projects in Economics

This paper aims to create a model to value European football players. It will do so by comparing a player's transfer fee and then measuring their value based on performances in the season after the transfer has occurred. The model will be applied to Europe's top five leagues: the English Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1, and the German Bundesliga. This study takes variables from multiple past studies to be used in the model, and adds a valuation for goalkeepers, which has never been done before. The goal of this study is to measure the variables that contribute …

Branding, Internationalization And Performance Of Restaurant Chains, Saarthak Bhatia, Joel Smith

Symposium of Student Scholars

Every year, restaurant companies try and find new and innovative ways to grow their business. Many companies look towards creating new brands and expanding internationally as a means of achieving this goal but do multibranding and the scope of internationalization (number of countries) have an influence on the firm performance of restaurant companies? We dive into this by looking at data from over 100 publicly traded companies to see what the results show.

The examination period for this study was 1997 to 2019. Data for 2013-2019 is still being collected. Sample selection started with 118 publicly traded restaurant firms listed …
