Understanding Financial Value Of Cloud-Based Business Applications: A Phenomenological Study, Victor Arthur Arthur
Understanding Financial Value Of Cloud-Based Business Applications: A Phenomenological Study, Victor Arthur Arthur
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
An understanding of opportunities and challenges in cloud computing is needed to better manage technology costs and create financial value. The purposes of this transcendental phenomenological study were to understand the lived experiences of minority business owners who operated business applications in the cloud and to explore how these experiences created financial value for businesses despite security challenges. Historically, minority business owners have experienced high rates of business failures and could benefit from information to help them manage business costs in order to position their businesses to grow and succeed. Modigliani-Miller's theorem on capital structure and Brealey and Young's concept …
Risks Management Application In Helping The Poor Through Microfinancing, Edmond Njombe Lyonga
Risks Management Application In Helping The Poor Through Microfinancing, Edmond Njombe Lyonga
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Poverty alleviation in Buea, Cameroon, has been a problem of concern for decades. The study is vital because managers who control the funds given to the government of Cameroon to help reduce poverty are politicians and do not equitably distribute the funds to all on the pretext that the default rate is high. The purpose of this study was to find better ways to make additional capital available to the microbusiness owners of Buea to open or improve businesses. This qualitative case study design was consistent with the aim of understanding the importance of risk management within the microfinance industry …

A Sectoral Analysis Of The 1929 Stock Market Crash, Paul Edward Reynolds Iii
CMC Senior Theses
The stock market crash of 1929 stands today as the largest decline in market value in the history of the United States. Consequently, the event destroyed the wealth of thousands of American families and institutions. On October 28th and 29th, the United States stock market fell 11.3 percent and 12.4 percent respectively, marking the beginning of a down market that lasted over three years, the time period known today as the Great Depression. This paper empirically analyzes the effects felt by each individual industry sector in the crash of 1929, identifying gross and abnormal returns over three major days in …
The Risk-Return Characteristics And Diversification Benefits Of Fine Wine Investment, Tania Salomon
The Risk-Return Characteristics And Diversification Benefits Of Fine Wine Investment, Tania Salomon
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis evaluates the risk-return characteristics and diversification benefits of fine wine investment. It compares the historical performance of wine to that of equity, fixed income, real estate, and commodities. I calculate the correlation, volatility, and expected returns of these assets to examine whether adding wine to a portfolio increases its risk-adjusted return. I do this through the Markowitz portfolio optimization technique. The findings suggest that wine has a low correlation with traditional assets, providing diversification benefits. My results also show that adding wine to a portfolio increases its risk-adjusted return only when there is an allocation constraint of 0 …

Effects Of Affluence On Rising Household Carbon Emission In The Philippines: An Application Using Quantile Regression Approach, Moises Neil V. Seriño
Effects Of Affluence On Rising Household Carbon Emission In The Philippines: An Application Using Quantile Regression Approach, Moises Neil V. Seriño
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study investigates whether rising affluence affects carbon emission differently by considering the distribution of households based on the level of emission. Whereas there are several empirical studies that examine this issue with mean based regression approach, limited studies have investigated the effect of affluence on the quantiles of household emission controlling for several household characteristics. Employing the methods of quantile regression, results show that rising affluence affects household emission differently. The effect is more pronounced among households in the upper emission quantile as compared to households in the lower emission quantile. This suggests that an increase in income translates …
Another Look At Demand-Side Digital Piracy, Andrea L. Santiago
Another Look At Demand-Side Digital Piracy, Andrea L. Santiago
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Technological improvements made it easier for individuals to download files for personal use. From one end, the clear message is that piracy is wrong and attention should be drawn to crushing piracy with education and disincentives. On the other end of the spectrum is the view that anything that can be accessed online is free. This paper encapsulates the major discussions on digital piracy thus far. It also looks at alternative ways to approach the debate so that more creative solutions can be developed without compromising on the basic principle that the creator of an idea or product deserves to …

African American Graduates' Experiences Of Managing College Debt, Christal Blalock
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Higher education is a means to improve professional status and economic mobility; however, mounting college debt has become a hindrance to college graduates, primarily African Americans. A disproportionate number of these graduates incur significant debt while attending college. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of African American college graduates who were managing debt incurred to pay for their education. Human capital theory and critical race theory provided the conceptual framework. Two research questions motivated this study: How do African American college graduates living in the state of Georgia manage their college debt? What …

Managing Energy Price Risk Using Futures Contracts: A Comparative Analysis, Jim Hanly
Managing Energy Price Risk Using Futures Contracts: A Comparative Analysis, Jim Hanly
Articles
This paper carries out a comparative analysis of managing energy risk through futures hedging, for energy market participants across a broad dataset that encompasses the largest and most actively traded energy products. Uniquely, we carry out a hedge comparison using a variety of risk measures including Variance, Value at risk (VaR), and Expected Shortfall as well as a utility based performance metric for two different investor horizons; weekly and monthly. We find that hedging is effective across the spectrum of risk measures we employ. We also find significant differences in both the hedging strategies and the hedging effectiveness of different …

Show Me The Money: A Study Of Interrelationships Between A Regional Theatre's Revenue And Location, Rebecca Snedeker-Meier
Senior Independent Study Theses
Regional theatres are non-profit organizations that survive off earned and contributed income. In particular, contributed, or donated, income can change depending on the community a theatre is located in. However, there is no consensus whether there is a relationship between the two. This study compares Arena Stage, Guthrie Theater, Cleveland Play House and Alley Theatre to answer the question; how does geographic location relate to the ratios of revenue sources? The income ratios were based off numbers derived from 990 tax forms and the theatres’ operating budgets. Those numbers were then analyzed and compared to the other theatres’ income ratios. …
Two Essays On Investors' Attention To Economically Linked Firms, Mahsa Khoshnoud
Two Essays On Investors' Attention To Economically Linked Firms, Mahsa Khoshnoud
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My first essay examines the degree to which the market prices of publicly traded firms reflect and respond to new information regarding the economic viability and vitality of organizations to which they are strategically linked. More specifically, I exploit the uniquely transparent nature of the lessor-lessee relationship across commercial real estate markets to evaluate whether future returns to real estate investment trusts (REITs) are systematically affected by the financial return performance and/or operational opacity of the tenants who lease their investment properties. Using a hand collected data set identifying the principal tenants of 96 publicly traded REITs, I find those …
Essays On Corporate Vertical Integration, He Li
Essays On Corporate Vertical Integration, He Li
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
My Dissertation examines the corporate diversification strategy of vertical integration. Vertical integration refers to the organizational structure in which divisions within the firm are integrated along the supply chain. I examine the advantages and disadvantages associated with vertical integration in two chapters.
In Chapter 2, I model how inter-divisional spillover effects mitigate internal capital market (ICM) inefficiencies. The model shows that the spillover effect helps align the objectives of division managers and the objective of the CEO and the firm, and thus facilitates efficient capital allocation at equilibrium. Empirically, I measure the size of the spillover effect by the degree …
Leadership Adaptation To Changes In Public Funding Of Community Colleges, James Hightower Simpson
Leadership Adaptation To Changes In Public Funding Of Community Colleges, James Hightower Simpson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although growth in U.S. community colleges has been exponential, a major challenge accompanying that growth has been the source of funding, which has consisted of shifting proportions of tuition, local taxes, and state aid. The shift away from state aid toward fundraising, profit-oriented research, sophisticated financing, and higher tuition presents challenges and unintended consequences. This shift could threaten the community college access mission and contribute to a perception of higher education as a private good rather than a public good. With a framework of academic capitalism and resource dependency theories, the purpose of this basic qualitative interview study with 7 …

Using Accounting Information To Forecast Market Performance, Tyler Atanasov
Using Accounting Information To Forecast Market Performance, Tyler Atanasov
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This study examines how accounting information can be used to forecast market performance of stocks. We used the specific accounting information of earnings-to-price and book-to-market value ratios, in relation to a stocks 5-year holding period return to determine market performance. The most current, quarterly data with a longer sample period than previous studies was used. First, portfolios of stocks were formed based on the value of each stocks ratio. Next, univariate tests were then run on each ratio’s portfolios to determine if there was statistical significance in the differences among the portfolios returns. Lastly, we determined that investors could earn …
The Impact Of Socially Conscious Initiative Announcements On Coffee Company Stock Values, Glenn Thomas Smith
The Impact Of Socially Conscious Initiative Announcements On Coffee Company Stock Values, Glenn Thomas Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Stockholders invest billions of dollars in the purchase of new corporate coffee stock while producers of these commodities exist in poverty of developing nations. Corporate managers may miss the opportunities for offering humanitarian aid if potential stockholders do not know of corporate social change initiatives. Little research in the influence of socially conscious initiatives exists in the coffee sector and none concentrating on socially conscious initiative announcements. If a relationship exists between socially conscious initiative announcements and stock investments, then managers could justify funding social change initiatives. This quantitative study used a 5 day pre and post event study methodology …

The high debt-to-income ratios and the low financial literacy levels among Canadian immigrants are hindering public welfare, macroeconomic policies, and economic growth. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore why immigrants to Lloydminster, Canada possess high debt-to-income ratios in their financial portfolios by examining pertinent themes and patterns between their debt profiles and their financial literacy levels. The life cycle hypothesis, rational choice theory, and bounded rationality theory grounded the study. Data collection from the purposeful sample included semistructured face-to-face interviews with 13 adult immigrants and a focus group discussion with 6 adult immigrants, all of …
The Determinants Of Traffic Citation Revenues On Florida's Clerks Of Court And Comptrollers, Corey A. Hamilton
The Determinants Of Traffic Citation Revenues On Florida's Clerks Of Court And Comptrollers, Corey A. Hamilton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the wake of budgetary restraints, many local government organizations are examining existing sources of revenue to exhaust available streams without increasing constituents' financial burden. Some of these revenue streams include nontraditional sources, such as traffic citations, yet little research has explored the implications of revenue generated from fines from traffic citations. Using the theory of resource dependence as the foundation, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the estimated population of the county, the unemployment rate of the county, and the personal income per capita against the number of traffic citations issued and the Florida …

Relationship Between Mutual Fund Type, Portfolio Turnover, Longevity, Management Turnover, And Performance, Medhanie G. Mekonnen
Relationship Between Mutual Fund Type, Portfolio Turnover, Longevity, Management Turnover, And Performance, Medhanie G. Mekonnen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mutual fund portfolio managers do not always meet risk-adjusted performance expectations, resulting in loss of capital reserves. Out of 3,612 U.S. based open-ended mutual funds, the risk-adjusted performance of 2,890 (80%) failed to meet or beat the S&P 500 (index fund) performance between the year 2006 to 2016. Grounded in Markowitz's modern portfolio theory, the purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between mutual fund class type, portfolio turnover, fund longevity, management turnover, and annual fund risk-adjusted performance. Archival data were collected from 88 U.S. based equity mutual funds companies. The results of the multiple regression analysis …
Exploring Student Loan Personal Financial Management Decisions Using A Behavioral Economics Lens, Michael J. Wermuth
Exploring Student Loan Personal Financial Management Decisions Using A Behavioral Economics Lens, Michael J. Wermuth
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a student loan debt problem in the United States. Seven million student borrowers are in default and another 14 million are delinquent on their loans. A high level of college loan debt leaves students with insurmountable payments and holds them back from starting a family, buying a home, or saving for retirement. The problem is that financial managers may not understand the student loan decision process well enough to help students make a loan decision that prevents an unmanageable level of debt. The purpose of this study was to explore and understand the student's loan decision process using …

Marital Status And Earnings Management, Gilles Hillary, Sterling Huang, Yanping Xu
Marital Status And Earnings Management, Gilles Hillary, Sterling Huang, Yanping Xu
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
In this note, we examine the effect of CEO marital status on the riskiness of financial reporting. Using multiple proxies, we find that firms headed by a single CEO display a higher degree of earnings management than those headed by a married CEO. The effect is economically significant. Our results persist in an instrumental variable regression, suggesting that our results are not driven by innate heterogeneity in preferences.
