Fdi And Manufacturing Industry In Asia, Luyi Jin Feb 2017

Fdi And Manufacturing Industry In Asia, Luyi Jin

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

The study finds that China’s manufacturing still maintained a growth level from 2003 to 2013. However, the growth has been declining. The rapid development of ASEAN economies led to the rise of the emerging manufacturing countries which have slowly adjusted and found their own advantages in challenging China.

The main conclusions of this paper are twofold. First, China will soon lose her low labor cost competitive advantage and needs to look for new strategy or industrial upgrades. Second, the current pattern of international division of labor will last for a fairly long period that developing countries will continue to serve …

Portfolio Recallocation And Exchange Rate Dynamics, King Chun Wong Feb 2017

Portfolio Recallocation And Exchange Rate Dynamics, King Chun Wong

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

This empirical paper aims to review a previous literature entitles “Portfolio Reallocation and Exchange Rate Dynamics”. The literature stated that including financial market structure can provide a micro-foundation to complement other macro-based models for exchange rate dynamics which typically are meaningful for the medium and long terms but not satisfactory for the short run. The model in the literature offers another way to look at exchange rate dynamics that is significant in the short run and more practical in nature. Undoubtedly, many investors in the financial market, such as traders, dealers, fund managers, and speculators who adjust their portfolio components …

How Do Cdos And Cdss Influence The Crisis Of 2008, Martin Buffet Feb 2017

How Do Cdos And Cdss Influence The Crisis Of 2008, Martin Buffet

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

Everybody has heard about the “subprime” crisis but do we really know how it occurred and why this phenomenon had such an impact on our economies. One aspect of the answer to this question lies in the trade of credit default swaps (CDSs). These financial products led to less transparency in the markets and to a very collectively vulnerable financial system. This created a vicious circle that had not been anticipated by our financial regulators. In this paper, we will discuss how it occurred and what could have been done to avoid, or at lease reduce, the impact of these …

The Study Of Enhanced Performance Measurement Of Mutual Funds In Asia Pacific Market, Juzhen Li

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

This empirical paper will compare the result by running Costa and Jakob's models (2010) using mutual funds in Asia Pacific market excluding Japan. Costa and Jakob's paper, Enhanced Performance Measurement of Mutual Funds: Running the Benchmark Index through the Hurdles, is highly related to this empirical paper and is generally based on Carhart's four-factor model (Carhart, 1997) with US securities market data. Apart from the comparison between Asia Pacific market excluding Japan and US market, further research on auxiliary and heteroscedasticity will also be conducted.

Monitoring And Employee Shirking: Evidence From Mlb Umpires, John Charles Bradbury Feb 2017

Monitoring And Employee Shirking: Evidence From Mlb Umpires, John Charles Bradbury

Faculty Articles

Standard neoclassical principal-agent theory predicts that stricter monitoring should reduce employee shirking from principal desires; however, recent analyses indicate that social aspects of principal-agent relationships may result in monitoring “crowding out” disciplinary effects. From 2001 to 2008 Major League Baseball (MLB) instituted an automated pitch-tracking system (QuesTec) to assist in monitoring its umpires. The asymmetric implementation of this new monitoring technology allows for the comparison of monitored and unmonitored umpires to identify shirking to placate on-field lobbying pressure. Estimates identify deviations in calls associated with monitoring; however, overall, umpires appeared to be quite sensitive to league directives for changes in …

Why Trade Credit Financing Is More Important Than Developing Large Customer Relationships For Video Game Suppliers, Jocelyn D. Evans, Dominique G. Outlaw Feb 2017

Why Trade Credit Financing Is More Important Than Developing Large Customer Relationships For Video Game Suppliers, Jocelyn D. Evans, Dominique G. Outlaw

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Trade credit extended to suppliers in the video game industry does not serve as a commitment device for large customers in determining which vendors to make relationship-specific investments in. Suppliers of video games are better off investing in relationships with trade creditors than seeking out large customers. The costs of large customer relationships are lower sales growth and less long-term debt leverage. Also, large customers don’t form relationships with suppliers in this industry, which has high research and development expenditures nor do they facilitate economic viability with regard to continued independent operational performance or listing on a stock exchange.

The Evolution Of Financing Structure In U.S. Startups, Carmen Cotei, Joseph Farhat Feb 2017

The Evolution Of Financing Structure In U.S. Startups, Carmen Cotei, Joseph Farhat

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In this article we examine how startup businesses finance their operations over time. We employ the Latent growth modeling technique to test the financial growth cycle theory developed by Berger and Udell (1998). The data used in this study is the Kauffman Firm Survey, the largest longitudinal data set comprised of a random sample of U.S. startups launched in 2004 and surveyed annually through 2011. Consistent with the predictions of financial growth cycle theory, in the startup stage, entrepreneurs rely on initial insider capital sources such as personal savings, financing offered by friends and family, quasi-equity, and personal debt. Over …

What Exactly Is Market Integrity? An Analysis Of One Of The Core Objectives Of Securities Regulation, Janet Austin Feb 2017

What Exactly Is Market Integrity? An Analysis Of One Of The Core Objectives Of Securities Regulation, Janet Austin

William & Mary Business Law Review

One of the main objectives of securities regulation around the world is to protect the integrity or fairness of the markets. This, together with protecting investors, improving the efficiency of markets, and protecting the markets from systemic risk, form the four fundamental goals of securities regulation.

However, what exactly is envisaged by this concept of market integrity or fairness? Are these simply norms of behaviour incapable of further definition? Despite their importance, relatively little attention has been given to these concepts in the literature. Do they, for example, require securities regulators to just work towards eliminating dishonest trading practices such …

Private Equity In Family Firms: Drivers Of The Willingness To Cede Control, Marisa Henn, Prof. Dr. Eva Lutz Feb 2017

Private Equity In Family Firms: Drivers Of The Willingness To Cede Control, Marisa Henn, Prof. Dr. Eva Lutz

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Our aim is to empirically examine how reasons for using private equity (PE) and prior experience with PE affect the willingness of privately held firms to cede company control. Based on a questionnaire entailing 75 privately held firms backed by PE, we show that family firms cede less control than non-family firms when entering a PE transaction. However, if firms seek funds due to challenges related to ownership changes, the difference between family firms and non-family firms decreases. Moreover, we find that family firms sell more company shares if they are run by a PE-experienced manager.

Returns To Tilapia Fish Farming In Ghana – Implications For Tilapia Pooled Investment Vehicles, Kwami Adanu, Mawufemor Adanu Feb 2017

Returns To Tilapia Fish Farming In Ghana – Implications For Tilapia Pooled Investment Vehicles, Kwami Adanu, Mawufemor Adanu

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In Ghana, the private sector’s response to financing constraints associated with aquaculture investment has been to employ Pooled Investment Vehicles (PIVs). Unfortunately, several of these PIVs faced insolvency with huge losses to investors as returns promised investors turn out to be unrealizable. The premise of this study is that such insolvency problems occur mainly because of the lack of reliable data on likely returns and risk associated with Tilapia farm investments. This study improves on the “single value” profitability estimates of previous studies by performing Value at Risk (VaR) analyses on estimated farm-level returns, and 5,000 Monte Carlo simulation …

Analyst Ratings For Firms Filing And Reorganizing Under Chapter 11, Elena Precourt, Henry Oppenheimer

Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine analyst followings of firms starting from one year prior to their filing for Chapter 11 and as the firms progress through bankruptcy proceedings with a focus on firms receiving “Hold” or better recommendations. The authors attempt to answer questions such as what the common characteristics of the firms receiving stronger than expected recommendations one year prior to filing for bankruptcy reorganization or while in bankruptcy are, and how the market reacts to the issuance of stronger ratings for those firms.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors design various regressions and apply them to a …

Risk Appetites And Empirical Survival Pattern Of Small And Medium Enterprises In Nigeria, Joshua S. Adeyele Dr., Osazee G. Omorokunwa Dr. Feb 2017

Risk Appetites And Empirical Survival Pattern Of Small And Medium Enterprises In Nigeria, Joshua S. Adeyele Dr., Osazee G. Omorokunwa Dr.

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

ABSTRACT

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital to economic growth and development of a nation. However, many of them fail in the first five years of incorporation due to their exposures to risk financing and strategies employed to meet customers’ need during business shutdown. Hence, this study is designed to verify how SMEs’ risk financing affect their continuity, and to model their survival patterns in context of risk financing and risk management approach employed by the operators. Two hundred and nine copies of valid questionnaire distributed to the respondents were filled and returned. Cramer’s V and multiple regressions were …

Capital Markets Financing For Agricultural Business Development In Tanzania; A Case Of Cocoa Farming In Kyela And Rungwe Districts, Godfrey Frank Molela Feb 2017

Capital Markets Financing For Agricultural Business Development In Tanzania; A Case Of Cocoa Farming In Kyela And Rungwe Districts, Godfrey Frank Molela

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This study tries to explore the financing opportunity for smallholder cocoa farmers available at capital markets through enterprise growth market (EGM) financing window. The research findings from 122 cocoa farmers revealed that, in average a single cocoa farmer needed Tshs. 551,808.12 per acre as capital investment in a given season. At the time of data collection the cocoa prices at London and New York futures markets were Tshs. 6,266.75/Kg and Tshs. 6,148.62/Kg respectively at prevailed rates which were far above the production cost. In this case the envisaged gross margin was sufficient to service issuers’ interest of running their business …

Information Asymmetry And Adverse Wealth Effects Of Crowdfunding, Fathali Firoozi, Abol Jalilvand, Donald Lien Feb 2017

Information Asymmetry And Adverse Wealth Effects Of Crowdfunding, Fathali Firoozi, Abol Jalilvand, Donald Lien

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act of 2012 in the U.S. expanded the capital markets so that entrepreneurs can appeal directly to non-traditional small crowd investors for investment funds. The final rules and forms of the JOBS Act became effective in May 16, 2016. Existing literature is thus relatively small but contains ample praises for expected positive consequences of the new crowdfunding laws for the capital markets and for the crowd in general but has only limited analysis on the prospect of adverse wealth effects of crowdfunding for the crowd investors. A limited number of existing studies have highlighted …

News Management Around Equity Private Placements, Hsiao-Chen Liang, Woan-Yuh Jang Feb 2017

News Management Around Equity Private Placements, Hsiao-Chen Liang, Woan-Yuh Jang

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Private placement is the sale of securities to a limited number of qualified institutions or high-wealth investors. Although private placement is favorable for firms raising capital, it is relatively easy for managers to exploit it to benefit specific investors. Using a sample of Taiwanese private placements covering 2006 to 2010, we use both quantitative and qualitative variables to examine the determinants of the valence and tenor of media coverage around private placement announcements and study whether managers strategically perform news management. The results show that issuers will engage in news management around private placement announcements to facilitate the issue process. …

When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going, Antti Fredriksson, Daniela Maresch, Matthias Fink, Andrea Moro Feb 2017

When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going, Antti Fredriksson, Daniela Maresch, Matthias Fink, Andrea Moro

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

A bank’s lending decision is affected by the amount of information it can access and by its capability to manage this information. The latter aspect implies that the bank has to decide whether borrowers should be managed in a local branch of the bank or in its headquarters. By looking at a sample of Finnish banks, the present research investigates a bank’s capability to extract profitability from both locally and centrally managed firms. We find that banks are able to properly discriminate between firms: those which should be managed by loan managers with expert knowledge in the bank’s headquarters due …

Essays In Corporate Responsibility And Finance, Mert Demir Feb 2017

Essays In Corporate Responsibility And Finance, Mert Demir

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation consists of three chapters:

Chapter 1: The Effects of Corporate Social Performance and Social Norms on Market Valuation of Nonfinancial Disclosures Using a novel measure of the quality of corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosures by global companies, this paper analyzes how CSR report quality affects firm value when mediating roles of social pressure and CSR performance are considered. I find that firms operating in socially controversial industries enjoy higher valuations when they issue high-quality CSR reports. I also find that for firms with poor CSR performance, higher-quality CSR disclosure is associated with a decline in firm value, while …

International Volatility Risk And Chinese Stock Return Predictability, Jian Chen, Fuwei Jiang, Yangshu Liu, Jun Tu Feb 2017

International Volatility Risk And Chinese Stock Return Predictability, Jian Chen, Fuwei Jiang, Yangshu Liu, Jun Tu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper investigates the predictive ability of international volatility risks for the daily Chinese stock market returns. We employ the innovations in implied volatility indexes of seven major international markets as our international volatility risk proxies. We find that international volatility risks are negatively associated with contemporaneous Chinese daily overnight stock returns, while positively forecast next-day Chinese daytime stock returns. The US volatility risk (ΔVIX) is particularly powerful in forecasting Chinese stock returns, and plays a dominant role relative to the other six international volatility measures. ΔVIX's forecasting power remains strong after controlling for Chinese domestic volatility and is robust …

Determining The Multi-Scale Hedge Ratios Of Stock Index Futures Using The Lower Partial Moments Method, Jun Dai, Haigang Zhou Jan 2017

Determining The Multi-Scale Hedge Ratios Of Stock Index Futures Using The Lower Partial Moments Method, Jun Dai, Haigang Zhou

Business Faculty Publications

This paper considers a multi-scale future hedge strategy that minimizes lower partial moments (LPM). To do this, wavelet analysis is adopted to decompose time series data
into different components. Next, different parametric estimation methods with known distributions are applied to calculate the LPM of hedged portfolios, which is the key to
determining multi-scale hedge ratios over different time scales. Then these parametric methods are compared with the prevailing nonparametric kernel metric method. Empirical results indicate that in the China Securities Index 300 (CSI 300) index futures and spot markets, hedge ratios and hedge efficiency estimated by the nonparametric kernel metric …

How Long Does Savings Last When Retirees Need More Money (Or Less) Than Conventional Wisdom Suggests?, Steven J. Welch Jan 2017

How Long Does Savings Last When Retirees Need More Money (Or Less) Than Conventional Wisdom Suggests?, Steven J. Welch

Forum Lectures

Popular convention is to initially withdraw approximately 4% of the retirement savings and increase that dollar amount each year by inflation. But, what if 4% isn't enough? How long will retirement funds last if a newly retired person needs 5%, 6%, or even 10%? Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) suggests that an investor only needs to choose between 2 assets, the risk free rate and an optimal risky portfolio. In this research, five U.S.-based assets are tracked from 1934 until 2015 to see how long they survived independently and in combination with one other asset. Obviously the more a person needs …

Searching For Illicit Behavior Through Changes In Productivity: The Case Of Roger Clemens And Performance-Enhancing Drugs, John Charles Bradbury Jan 2017

Searching For Illicit Behavior Through Changes In Productivity: The Case Of Roger Clemens And Performance-Enhancing Drugs, John Charles Bradbury

Faculty Articles

Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens has been accused of using performance-enhancing drugs to boost his performance. If Clemens used ergogenic aids consistent with the accusations of use, then unusual changes in productivity may be evident in his performance record. Two previous studies have examined Clemens’s career and reached conflicting conclusions: Bradlow et al. (2008) declares Clemens’s career to be “atypical” while Albert (2009) finds Clemens’s productivity to be unusually strong but similar to other pitchers who have not been linked with performance-enhancing drugs. This study examines Clemens’s performance at times of alleged use and over his career and finds …

Is The Dodd-Frank Act Destroying What Is Left Of U.S. Thrifts?, Scott Deacle Jan 2017

Is The Dodd-Frank Act Destroying What Is Left Of U.S. Thrifts?, Scott Deacle

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

I examine data from 1992 to 2015 to assess the Dodd-Frank Act’s impact on the performance of U.S. depository institutions, thrifts in particular. Ceteris paribus, the average FDIC-regulated institution experienced a decline in profitability as measured by pre-tax return on assets (ROA) following the Act’s passage, but the decline was concentrated among commercial banks. Small thrifts increased pre-tax profitability, after controlling for other factors including weak economic growth. Depository institution loan quality improved after Dodd-Frank, less so for small thrifts but more so for large thrifts. Efficiency ratios, which regulatory costs affect, increased, more for thrifts than banks.
