Value At Risk In Dominican Banking: Evaluating The Regulatory Method, Jonathan Medina

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Financial institutions in the Dominican Republic, since 2004, have used the regulatory Value at Risk to measure market risk. This method is subject to criticism. The purpose of this study is to compare the regulatory VaR method against the Historic Simulation, Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity, and Monte Carlo approaches. The latter is more conservative and its assumptions are more realistic.

The Effect Of Kurtosis On The Cross-Section Of Stock Returns, Abdullah Al Masud May 2012

The Effect Of Kurtosis On The Cross-Section Of Stock Returns, Abdullah Al Masud

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In this study, I show an effect of the statistical fourth moment on stock returns. In the mean-variance framework, rational investors follow two strategies: optimize the mean{variance of return and diversify the portfolio. Regarding the first approach, investors intend to generate the maximum level of return while facing a constant level of risk (or, the standard deviation) of return. It is possible that firm specific risk can be concentrated in the portfolio. However, diversification of the assets can eliminate that (idiosyncratic) risk from the portfolio. After a long period of time, in a diversified portfolio the shape of the return …

Soccer is so profoundly intertwined with Brazilian culture that familiarity with the sport begins early, producing a bottomless pool of talent. Year after year, soccer stars seem to roll out of Brazil like cars off a factory assembly line; it’s a natural talent that grows in almost every Brazilian child. Soccer means passion to Brazilians; it is the symbol of their nationality, as they have proven to be very the best at it.

Now, Brazil finally has …

How has SFAS 142 opened the door for earnings management? If there is evidence to prove this assumption, then what factors drive management's impairment decisions. This information is pertinent to investors when analyzing a potential investment as goodwill can …

Energy Sources And The Production Of Electricity In The United States, David Manukjan

Honors College Theses

The current sources of energy that the United States uses to produce electricity are costly, extremely damaging to the environment, and cause us to rely on other countries for our energy needs. The Obama Administration has begun working on replacing coal and oil with cleaner sources of energy. Over the last decade, alternative energy sources have been slowly gaining popularity as the American public learns more about climate change. However, the U.S. government will not use renewable energy as a complete substitute for fossil fuels in the immediate future because of their higher market price. The world is struggling to …

Essays On Mergers And Acquisitions And Governance, Rwan Ibrahim Talib El-Khatib May 2012

Essays On Mergers And Acquisitions And Governance, Rwan Ibrahim Talib El-Khatib

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a recent strand of corporate finance literature that explores the impact of executives and directors' Social connections on firm value, performance, and governance. Those studies document that such Social connections could be beneficial when they enhance the sharing of information and knowledge, but could also be detrimental when associated with CEOs, as they could provide the CEO with a source of influence that makes her more entrenched and powerful.

In the first essay, I use four common measures of network centrality to compute the position of the CEO within the Social network of all executives and directors of …

By using the BLS 2010 Consumer Expenditure Data, I can look at how different factors, such as income, age, family size and number of kids under the age of eighteen all effect household savings. The Uncovered Interest Rate Parity Failure From 2002 To 2005 : An Implicit Consensus Of Carry Trade, Yui Law

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

There are many literatures devoted to the study of the uncovered interest parity (UIP); however, majority of them focus on whether UIP exists and only a few concentrate on the pattern of the UIP failure. By using a panel VAR approach, this paper compares the intensive carry trade period, between 2002 and 2005, and the pre-intensive carry trade period, between 1998 and 2001. High interest rate currencies made investors believed that the currencies would appreciate and bided their price even …

Evidences Of High Sensitivity Of Investors To Financial News After Crises : Cases Study Of Asian Financial Crisis And Sub-Prime, Yui Law

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

In the academic field of international stock market, some critics argue that, after having a global financial crisis, stock markets around the world will become more integrated. In fact, many researchers have put forward empirical works showing that the co-relation, or Granger-Causality, among different stock markets, strengthens comparatively at the post crisis period. This finding is rational; however, the explanation given for the increased co-movement after the crisis is not sufficient. The critics suggest that this increase is caused by the increase in international arbitrage activities and the higher degree of integration among markets. The Purpose of this paper is …
