Down But Not Out: The Future Of The Financial Services Industry, Arindam Bandopadhyaya, Miranda Detzler, Mohsin Habib

Financial Services Forum Publications

The financial services industry is a key sector of the U.S. economy. It is a noteworthy contributor to the overall gross domestic product and is an important component of the gross state product for many states. With the downturn in the economy at the beginning of this decade and the accompanying declines in stock market values, the industry has been hit hard. Asset management firms have experienced sharp decreases in their assets under management; banks and insurance companies have had to refocus their operations and have become increasingly vulnerable to acquisition. As evidence grows stronger that it is unlikely that …

Financial Performance Of Insurance Companies Following Initial Public Offerings, Kulkanya Napompech Apr 2002

Financial Performance Of Insurance Companies Following Initial Public Offerings, Kulkanya Napompech

Doctoral Dissertations

The quality of insurance companies is a very significant societal issue. Policyholders pay premiums assuming indemnity of their potential losses. It is essential that an insurer be able to meet its contractual obligations when a loss occurs. An initial public offering provides an infusion of capital and an expansion of resources available to a firm. Thus, the objective of this study is to examine the financial and operating impacts of initial public offerings during 1980–2000 on insurance companies.

Chapter 2 examines changes in operating performance of property/casualty insurance companies following initial public offerings. I find that following initial public offerings, …

"Would Bond Market Be A More Viable Investment Alternative To The Stock Market?", Hock Poon Chew Jan 2002

"Would Bond Market Be A More Viable Investment Alternative To The Stock Market?", Hock Poon Chew

Student Works (2000-2009)

"Traditionally, investors have viewed bonds as boring investments that do not give good returns and that burdens portfolios," says Dale Bryant, a portfolio manager. "They couldn't be more misled. Sometimes bonds can do better than equities. Adding bonds can reduce portfolio volatility." Bryant's statement forms the crux of this research project. This paper investigates the co-movement of stocks and bonds on a monthly basis from April 1996 to May 2001. Average returns and standard deviations for the bond and stock market are computed and a comparison is performed to establish which market provides a better return and is less volatile. …

Two Essays On Exchange -Traded Funds, Natalya Vladimir Delcoure Apr 2001

Two Essays On Exchange -Traded Funds, Natalya Vladimir Delcoure

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is twofold. The first objective is to conduct an empirical inquiry into the diversification benefits of exchange-traded funds. The second objective is to examine whether exchange-traded funds exhibit superior performance compared to their rival closed-end country fund and traditional index mutual fund. I document that American investors manifest their preference for WEBS as a substitute for closed-end country funds. While I find that WEBS satisfy their objective of following their home indexes better than their rival closed-end country fund, the two-factor model I employ indicates that, despite some diversification benefits, WEBS also maintain certain risk …

Going Places : Atm Services In India, Sanjiv Kumar Bhatia Mar 2001

Going Places : Atm Services In India, Sanjiv Kumar Bhatia

IIMB Management Review

Post-liberalisation banking sector reforms brought in a new era of competition, forcing banks to look for different ways of competing. ATM (automated teller machine) services helped banks increase their reach and improve customer responsiveness and also provided them with opportunities to open new streams of revenues. However, regulatory bindings, such as the control on the number of ATMs that can be deployed by the public sector banks, and tariff issues like high custom duty on ATM hardware, made this option unviable and constrained the growth of ATMs in the country in last decade.

Forecasting Volatility: Evidence From The German Stock Market, Hagen H. W. Bluhm, Jun Yu Feb 2001

Forecasting Volatility: Evidence From The German Stock Market, Hagen H. W. Bluhm, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper we compare two basic approaches to forecast volatility in the German stock market. The first approach uses various univariate time series techniques while the second approach makes use of volatility implied in option prices. The time series models include the historical mean model, the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) model, four ARCH-type models and a stochastic volatility (SV) model. Based on the utilization of volatility forecasts in option pricing and Value-at-Risk (VaR), various forecast horizons and forecast error measurements are used to assess the ability of volatility forecasts. We show that the mode lrankings are sensitive to …

Holiday Effect : A Decade Of Change In The Performance Of The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, Rina Bee Yan Tong

Student Works (2000-2009)

This empirical research investigates the holiday effect in the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) using three daily stock indices: Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange Composite Index (KLSE Cl), Exchange Main Board All-Share Index (KLSE EMI), and Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange Second Board Index (KLSE SBI) over the period January 1990 to June 2001. The results show abnormally high preholiday returns which predominate only on the single trading day immediately prior to holidays and the pre-holiday fraction of positive return is found significantly higher for all three indices. On the other hand, the post-holiday returns are higher than normal trading days but …

Preliminary Assessment Of Client Interest In And Needs Of The New England Environmental Finance Center, New England Environmental Finance Center, University Of Southern Maine

Planning

The New England Environmental Finance Center (NE/EFC) has been conceived as a knowledge-based clearinghouse, training, and change-agent program aimed at helping EPA's constituencies find financially successful approaches to environmental improvements. The NE/EFC will develop approaches to needs of particular priority in New England and potentially useful throughout the nation; share such approaches through the EFC national network; and help make tools from that network accessible throughout New England. In 1999 we began exploring with potential users how this ninth of the nation's EFCs might best address the region's needs. The assessment continued through the Muskie School's EFC proposal to EPA …

Water

The town of Yarmouth currently has a $30 million septic sludge treatment plant and transport lines in place. The vast majority of the dwellings and businesses in the Hyannis Park area are on septic systems that are viable and Title 5 compliant, regardless of age. Conventional, "non-failing" septic systems, however, were never intended to remove form their effluent nutrients such as nitrogen. These have become recognized as an environmental threat only as our understanding of the impacts of excess nutrients on ecosystems has increased in recent decades.

Bullion

The annual budget is a key instrument for implementation of Government projects, programmes and policies. This paper attempts to explain the fact that the annual budget serves three important purposes, namely; as a tool for accountability and transparency; as a tool of management, and as an instrument of economic policy. The paper conclude that Despite the macrocosmic achievement of this, Administration, basic structural imbalances persist. These include the lingering problems of import dependence, reliance on a single economic sector-oil, weak industrial base, low level of agricultural production, a weak Private sector, high external debt overhang, inefficient public utilities, low quality …

The Applicability Of The Dividend-Yield Investment Strategy At The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, Allan, Kim Hon. Ngam Jan 2000

The Applicability Of The Dividend-Yield Investment Strategy At The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, Allan, Kim Hon. Ngam

Student Works (2000-2009)

Many theories, techniques and strategies have been developed over the years on how to outperform the stock market. The objective of this research is to apply the "Dividend-Yield" strategy on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange ("KLSE") to ascertain whether using such a strategy would provide superior investment return. Research findings using this strategy on the New York Stock Exchange ("NYSE") have shown favourable results. The data used in this research were sourced primarily from the KLSE, covering a period of 10 years from 1988 to 1997. This research is based on the premise that the investment universe comprises the component …

The Fundamental And Non-Fundamental Components Of Stock Prices: The Role Of Time-Varying Expected Inflation, Maosen Zhong Jul 1999

The Fundamental And Non-Fundamental Components Of Stock Prices: The Role Of Time-Varying Expected Inflation, Maosen Zhong

Doctoral Dissertations

I derive testable implications of fundamental and non-fundamental components of stock prices. In order to control for the role of time-varying expected inflation and to be able to perform reasonable empirical tests, I use a nominal (rather than a real) interpretation of the present-value model (PVM), whereby nominal interest rates approximate expected inflation. I conjecture that the fundamental and non-fundamental components represent the permanent and temporary components of stock prices, respectively. A series of cointegration analysis over the annual period 1871–1997 confirms my conjecture for the model with time-varying expected inflation. Various fundamental and non-fundamental exclusion tests indicate that both …

A Political Model Of Monetary Policy With Application To The Real Fed Funds Rate, Tony Caporale, Kevin B. Grier Oct 1998

A Political Model Of Monetary Policy With Application To The Real Fed Funds Rate, Tony Caporale, Kevin B. Grier

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We construct an empirical model of U.S. monetary policy assuming that the Federal Reserve is an ordinary federal bureaucracy. We use the real Federal Funds rate as our policy measure and show the existence of significant executive, legislative, and bureaucratic influence on the real rate of interest from 1961 to 1996. We find that presidential party is an adequate statistical measure of executive influence and that the voting scores of the Senate Banking Committee leadership best represent legislative influence. We argue that political changes cause systematic and predictable changes in monetary policy.

A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The Determinants Of Corporate Share Repurchases, Kenneth M. Washer Jul 1998

A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The Determinants Of Corporate Share Repurchases, Kenneth M. Washer

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this study is to determine which motives play a significant role in determining the extent of a firm's repurchasing activity. For firms repurchasing through the open market, the motives include taking advantage of perceived undervaluation, increasing financial leverage, distributing cash to shareholders, and reducing agency costs. For firms using a tender offer, the motives include taking advantage of perceived undervaluation and having the ability to significantly increase financial leverage. Also, the hypothesis that the perceived undervaluation motive is stronger for smaller firms is tested. Three censored regression models are employed, and each model's explanatory variables represent commonly …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Stock Index Cash And Futures Markets: A Cointegration Approach, Michael A. Pizzi, Andrew J. Economopoulos, Heather M. O'Neill May 1998

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Stock Index Cash And Futures Markets: A Cointegration Approach, Michael A. Pizzi, Andrew J. Economopoulos, Heather M. O'Neill

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

The existence of price discovery, market efficiency and market stability associated with spot and futures markets continues as a prominent discussion among academics, practitioners and regulators. Numerous papers examine the role of price discovery in the futures markets for various types of commodities and financial assets. Generally, the studies by Garbade and Silber (1983), Herbst, McCormack and West (1987), Kawaller, Koch and Koch (1987) and Schroeder and Goodwin (1991) indicate that price discovery occurs more significantly in the futures market compared to the cash market.

The Fischer Black Hypothesis: Some Time-Series Evidence, Tony Caporale, Barbara Mckiernan Jan 1998

The Fischer Black Hypothesis: Some Time-Series Evidence, Tony Caporale, Barbara Mckiernan

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We estimate an ARCH-M model to analyze the relationship between the conditional standard deviation of real gross national product (GNP) and its growth rate for the period 1871-1993. We find that variability significantly increases output growth rates. In addition, impulse response functions show that the effect of variability on growth rates is dynamic. These results provide evidence in favor of Black's (1987) business cycle hypothesis.

Breaking Trends And The Money-Output Correlation, David Fernandez Nov 1997

Breaking Trends And The Money-Output Correlation, David Fernandez

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the impact on the money-output correlation of a univariate specification that allows time series to be characterized as stationary around a broken trend function. Though pretesting suggests that U.S. real output (industrial production) can be described as broken-trend stationary, this result has only limited impact on the money-output correlation. Before 1985 there is a strong Granger causal relationship between money and broken-detrended output (hut not first-differenced output), even when different short-term interest rates are used as regressors. However, after 1985 this relationship weakens significantly, whether or not one determines that output has a unit root.
