Mutual Fund Fees Under An Oligopolistic Distribution Channel: Evidence From Korea, Kang Baek, Young S. Park Jul 2020

Mutual Fund Fees Under An Oligopolistic Distribution Channel: Evidence From Korea, Kang Baek, Young S. Park

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study analyzes whether, under oligopolistic distribution channels, mutual fund fees are primarily determined by a distribution company’s transaction-specific variables. The results empirically demonstrate that the intensity of market competition influences determinants. Through analyses at the firm level, this study demonstrates that the characteristics of an oligopolistic structure, and particularly the financial segments and scales of fund distributors, are important determinants of mutual fund fees during a collusive period. It finds that subsequent to the enforcement of pro-competitive policies, fees become more sensitive to market discipline and distributors’ transactional characteristics, particularly to sales concentration.

Fraud And Error Misstatements And Auditor Liability: The Moderating Role Of The Evaluator’S Auditing Knowledge, Thanyawee Pratoomsuwan, Orapan Yolrabil Jul 2020

Fraud And Error Misstatements And Auditor Liability: The Moderating Role Of The Evaluator’S Auditing Knowledge, Thanyawee Pratoomsuwan, Orapan Yolrabil

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Although a restatement is usually assumed to result from fraudulent behavior, Plumlee and Yohn (2010) studied whether a restatement might be attributed to both errors in the corporation’s internal controls and intentional misrepresentation. Moreover, prior research supports the notion that investors, regulators, boards, and other stockholders differentiate between fraud and error (Hennes et al., 2008). This study provides a preliminary understanding of how undetected fraud and error misstatements affect auditor liability, given the same outcome severity. A 2x2 between-subject experiment was conducted using undergraduate accounting students to represent evaluators who have high levels of auditing knowledge and nonaccounting students to …

Effect Of Advertising Expenditure On Firm Performance Of Filipino Corporations: A Two-Stage Least Squares Analysis, Safa D. Manala-O, Ringgold P. Atienza Jul 2020

Effect Of Advertising Expenditure On Firm Performance Of Filipino Corporations: A Two-Stage Least Squares Analysis, Safa D. Manala-O, Ringgold P. Atienza

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Advertising is commonly thought to lead to improved firm performance, but literature has been divided on the effect of advertising on revenue and profitability so far. Some studies confirm a link between these three variables, but others do not. Studies that negate a relationship between advertising expenditure and firm performance are of interest, particularly because advertising can be very expensive for a company. Thus, this study sought to examine the relationship between advertising expenditure, revenue, and net profit of 57 corporations listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) for 10 years, from 2008 to 2017. Using 2SLS regression analysis on …

The Impact Of Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment And Demographic Factors On Turnover Intentions Of Accounting Professionals In Auditing Firms In The Philippines With Moderating Effect Of Employee Development, Jerwin B. Tubay Jul 2020

The Impact Of Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment And Demographic Factors On Turnover Intentions Of Accounting Professionals In Auditing Firms In The Philippines With Moderating Effect Of Employee Development, Jerwin B. Tubay

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study aimed to determine whether intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction; affective, continuance, and normative organizational commitment; and various demographic factors in terms of age, gender, job level, marital status, educational attainment, and the number of years working with the current company would predict the turnover intention of Certified Public Accountants in Big 3 auditing firms in the Philippines. This will help companies understand why their accountants are leaving and provide recommendations on how to keep good talents. The moderating effects of employee development were also studied. Multiple regression and moderated multiple regression were used to analyze the effect. The …

Effect Of Financial Inclusion And Stability On Equality, Poverty, And Human Development: An Empirical Analysis In The Context Of South Asia, Souvik Banerjee Jul 2020

Effect Of Financial Inclusion And Stability On Equality, Poverty, And Human Development: An Empirical Analysis In The Context Of South Asia, Souvik Banerjee

DLSU Business & Economics Review

In this research endeavor, financial inclusion and its impact on three important aspects of human life (i.e., inequality, poverty, and human development) are explored in the south Asian region. Worldwide inequality is catching much attention from the academic community off late. Similarly, the extent of poverty and human development indicators of any country indicates the level of development. The penetration of the bank branch and automated teller machine (ATM) is considered as a proxy for financial inclusion. Long time-series data from 2004 to 2016 is considered for this study. This should be an important addition to the existing literature on …

Do Food Assistance And Welfare Of Rice Farmers Affect Food Security?, -- Suriani, -- Sartiyah Jul 2020

Do Food Assistance And Welfare Of Rice Farmers Affect Food Security?, -- Suriani, -- Sartiyah

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Poverty is always accompanying unmet food needs; hence it can disrupt food security. Efforts to improve food security can be made with government policy through food assistance, namely, rice for the poor and also increasing the amount of rice production from rice farmers to meet the adequacy of rice in an area. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of food assistance (Rastra) and farmers’ welfare on food security in terms of rice availability in Aceh-Indonesia in the short and long term. The model used is auto regression distributed lag (ARDL), and the determinant variables that are …

An Analysis Of The Effects Of Foreign Ownership On The Level Of Tax Avoidance Across Philippine Publicly Listed Firms, Ailyn A. Shi, Francis R. Concepcion, Cheri Mae R. Laguinday, Trisha Amber T. Ong Hian Huy, Angelo A. Unite Jul 2020

Unite

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Tax avoidance schemes used by firms to lessen their tax burden have long attracted widespread concern in the Philippines, where poor tax collection due to tax leakages has contributed to chronic fiscal deficits in the country. In this regard, corporate governance mechanisms, such as the firm’s ownership structure, play a significant role in ensuring that management acts ethically and in the best interest of the firm’s owners. In this study, we examine the effect of foreign ownership on corporate tax avoidance for non-financial firms listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) from 2009 to 2015. Using three different measures of …

Penalties And Some Counterfactuals To Beauty Premium: Evidence From A Job Search Simulation Experiment, Luisito C. Abueg, Patricia Gene O. Hubilla, Francheska M. Lozano, Patricia Isabel L. Valdivieso, Melissa Marri S. Valencia

DLSU Business & Economics Review

By utilizing Heckman’s two-stage selection model, this paper attempts to establish correlates between an individual’s physical attractiveness and the employer’s hiring decisions and wage allocations in an experimental labor market. Undergraduate students from De La Salle University Manila represented the sample for applicants. The findings show that, first, beauty premium is lower for men—more physically attractive male candidates have lower chances of getting hired, and subsequently acquire lower wages than more physically attractive women. Second, beauty premium does not differ between the sales and finance occupations. Third, the relationship between beauty and hiring probability comes from the employer’s personal bias, …

An Evaluation Of A New Investors-Based System Information Application In The Indonesian Stock Exchange, Berto Usman, Willy Abdillah, Ruth Yendra Indriyatmi Jul 2020

An Evaluation Of A New Investors-Based System Information Application In The Indonesian Stock Exchange, Berto Usman, Willy Abdillah, Ruth Yendra Indriyatmi

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study investigates the implementation of AKSes Application at the Indonesian Central Securities Depository (KSEI), adopting the Information System Success Model developed by DeLone and McLean, (2003). This model employs system quality (SYSQUAL), information quality (IQ), services quality (SERVQ), system use (SU), and user satisfaction (US) so as to evaluate the effectiveness and successful model of AKSes application. In particular, we empirically tested the relationship among the employed dimensions, in which we investigated the variance in SU and US as the dependent variables. Using a quantitative study with survey design, we used primary data that was collected by circulating questionnaires …

Examining Chronic And Transient Poverty Using The Community-Based Monitoring System (Cbms) Data: The Case Of The Municipality Of Orion, Alellie Borel Sobreviñas Jul 2020

Examining Chronic And Transient Poverty Using The Community-Based Monitoring System (Cbms) Data: The Case Of The Municipality Of Orion, Alellie Borel Sobreviñas

DLSU Business & Economics Review

With poverty reduction as the government’s primary goal, monitoring the poverty situation of households or individuals is deemed necessary. In the Philippines, several local government units (LGUs) have adopted the Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS) as a local poverty monitoring tool. This study used the constructed CBMS panel data for the municipality of Orion in Bataan province covering the period 2006, 2009, and 2012 to identify chronic and transient poor households based on the duration of poverty. A comparison between chronic and transient poor households revealed differences in their characteristics. For instance, chronic poor were generally found to have bigger household …

The Philippine Ukay-Ukay Culture As Sustainable Fashion, Hazel T. Biana Jul 2020

The Philippine Ukay-Ukay Culture As Sustainable Fashion, Hazel T. Biana

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Wang et al. (2019) proposed a sustainable fashion index model that aims to measure the sustainability of fashion companies. The model is interesting because of its underlying theory, which provides necessary dimensions and variables that make the fashion industry and its activities sustainable. This paper aims to employ these dimensions and variables as theoretical concepts to evaluate the sustainability of Philippine ukay-ukay culture. Ukay-ukay is a term used both for the act of shopping by digging up piles of used or pre-loved clothes until one makes a good find. It also refers to retailers of secondhand clothes and accessories in …

Stock Market Information And Security Prices, Haoyuan Li Jun 2020

Stock Market Information And Security Prices, Haoyuan Li

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Chapter 1: Analyst report content and stock market anomalies A series of recent papers document that security analyst recommendations tend to contradict stock-mispricing signals. This seems at odds with the large prior literature on the investment value of analyst recommendations. What justifications do analysts make when they write reports on mispriced stocks? I use the latest techniques in machine learning and textual analysis to categorize the qualitative information in a large sample of analyst reports. I find that report content can be intuitively classified into five categories or topics: 1) Growth, 2) Earnings, 3) New developments, 4) Management transactions, and …

Informing The Creation Of A Financial Literacy Tool For Cal Poly Students, Kelly Michelle Carroll Jun 2020

Informing The Creation Of A Financial Literacy Tool For Cal Poly Students, Kelly Michelle Carroll

Communication Studies

This research project examines the wants, needs, and desires of Cal Poly students to inform the creation of a financial literacy tool (tentatively named “MoneySmart”) to be created by another student. The methodologies used to gauge these metrics were a literature review and questionnaire. The literature review aids in understanding research regarding the current state of student financial literacy in the United States, including student attitudes toward the topic. Subsequent findings were used to create the questionnaire, which inquired about students’ financial stress, confidence in their abilities to manage their personal finances, specific interests for the design and contents of …

Two Essays On The Microstructure Of The Housing Market: Agents' Diffused Effort And Sellers' Behavior Bias, Zhaohui Li Jun 2020

Two Essays On The Microstructure Of The Housing Market: Agents' Diffused Effort And Sellers' Behavior Bias, Zhaohui Li

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

For the first essay, we generalize the classic Williams [1998 RFS] brokerage model by introducing the diffused effort. That is, the agent can cross-utilize effort spending on one listing to another one. Besides, the agent can manage heterogeneous housing assets. One counterintuitive finding in Williams’ paper is the absence of the agency problem. As a special case in our model, we recover the agency problem. We examine the positive externality due to the diffused effort and show that it depends on the agent’s inventory size. Hence there exists a trade-off between agents’ effort spending on existing listings and on finding …

Stochastic Capacity Management In The Presence Of Production Resource Disruption, Boya Yang Jun 2020

Stochastic Capacity Management In The Presence Of Production Resource Disruption, Boya Yang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation studies the capacity investment decision of a manufacturing firm facing demand uncertainty in the presence of shortage possibility in production resources, as often ignored in the literature. These production resources can be physical resources (component / raw material) or financial resources (working capital / budget). The shortage in these resources can be caused by a variety of supply chain disruptions; examples include global disruptions like COVID-19 and financial crisis in 2008 and local disruptions like shortage of components/workforce. The dissertation analyses two important issues related to capacity management: (i) the effect of production resource disruption on the capacity …

Buffett’S Derivatives: Disruptive Financing At Low Cost, Florencia Roca, Juan Carlos Sanchez Meyer May 2020

Buffett’S Derivatives: Disruptive Financing At Low Cost, Florencia Roca, Juan Carlos Sanchez Meyer

Journal of New Finance

The well-established methodology for valuing options, the Black & Scholes formula, has been successfully challenged by Warren Buffet; who not only has been critical of the formula for the case of long-dated options, but has also applied a different approach in multi-billion derivative contracts. We study Berkshire Hathaway’s Equity Put transactions from a value-investing point of view. We show that Buffett is not using them as speculative investments, but as a disruptive -and cheap- financing source. We uncover Buffett’s methodology for valuing long-dated Equity Puts as long-term loans.

Are Coco Bonds Suitable As Core Capital Instruments?, Kevin Dowd May 2020

Are Coco Bonds Suitable As Core Capital Instruments?, Kevin Dowd

Journal of New Finance

Basel III introduced significant innovations in bank regulation. One of them is the minimum required leverage ratio. To help banks implementing the new measure , Basel III created two different core capital measures: Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) and Additional Tier 1 (AT1). Since raising capital for CET1 is expensive, other instruments are used to build up AT1 in case of need, like for example Contingent Convertible (CoCo), which can convert to equity or written-down when a bank is under stress. In this paper we show that CoCos are not suitable as regulatory core capital instruments. Problems of timing, incentives, …

Regulatory Impacts On U.S. Financial Institutions, Ngeyan Almutairi May 2020

Regulatory Impacts On U.S. Financial Institutions, Ngeyan Almutairi

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, I examine data from 2000 to 2019 to assess the impact of banks’ regulations on the U.S. financial institutions’ performance. The first essay examines the impact of the Dodd-Frank Act on the U.S. banking industry. The findings show that the Dodd-Frank Act has a negative impact on banks’ profits, efficiency, solvency and cost of intermediation, the effect is stronger for smaller banks. The act shrinks the advantage of banks that are members of bank holding company compared to standalone banks. Capital requirements are associated with higher profitability, efficiency, and cost of intermediation, while assets liquidity ratio has …

Shattering Glass Ceilings: Where Are All Of The Women In Finance?, Rebecca Schubach May 2020

Shattering Glass Ceilings: Where Are All Of The Women In Finance?, Rebecca Schubach

Business and Economics Honors Papers

At a time when women are equally represented in professional fields such as medicine and academia, the finance industry is still facing a lack of gender diversity, most notability at the C-Suite level. Statistics on the paucity of women paint a bleak picture, despite the fact that women are awarded majority of undergraduate and graduate degrees in the United States, a reversal from just one generation ago. This begs the question, what is deterring women from a career in finance? Are compensation discrepancies at play? This paper seeks to examine if being a female truly penalizes a woman in regards …

Analyzing Competitive Balance In Professional Sport, Kevin Alwell May 2020

Analyzing Competitive Balance In Professional Sport, Kevin Alwell

Honors Scholar Theses

In this paper we review several measures to statistically analyze competitive balance and report which leagues have a wider variance of performance amongst its competitors. Each league seeks to maintain high levels of parity, making matches and overall season more unpredictable and appealing to the general audience. Here we quantify competitive advantage across major sports leagues in numbers using several statistical methods in order for leagues to optimize their revenue.

Three Essays On Financial Economics, Jiangyuan Li May 2020

Three Essays On Financial Economics, Jiangyuan Li

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Disagreement measures are known to predict cross-sectional stock returns but fail to predict market returns. This paper proposes a partial least squares disagreement index by aggregating information across individual disagreement measures and shows that this index significantly predicts market returns both in- and out-ofsample. Consistent with the theory in Atmaz and Basak (2018), the disagreement index asymmetrically predicts market returns with greater power in high sentiment periods, is positively associated with investor expectations of market returns, predicts market returns through a cash flow channel, and can explain the positive volume-volatility relationship.

Guarantees And Capital Infusions In Response To Financial Crises B: U.S. Guarantees During The Global Financial Crisis, June Rhee, Andrew Metrick Apr 2020

Guarantees And Capital Infusions In Response To Financial Crises B: U.S. Guarantees During The Global Financial Crisis, June Rhee, Andrew Metrick

Journal of Financial Crises

During 2008-09, the federal government extended multiple guarantee programs in an effort to restore the financial market and contain the panic and crisis in the market. For example, the Treasury provided a temporary guarantee program for the money market funds, the FDIC decided to stand behind certain debts and non-interest-bearing transaction accounts, and the Treasury, the FDIC, and the Federal Reserve agreed to share losses in certain assets belonging to Citigroup. This case reviews these guarantee programs implemented during the global financial crisis by the government and explores the different rationale that shaped certain design features of each program.

Why Is Las Vegas Busy Everyday? A Behavioural Analysis Of Impact Investors’ Attitude And Decision-Making Process, Isha Shah

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Remarking a discrepancy in the statistics of a growing influence of impact investment and yet its restrictive inclusion in the financial market has encouraged this inductive research to take an alternative approach to address the impact investment market. In an emic perspective, this study aims to assess the factors motivating individuals and institutions to pursue impact investment. Further, it also investigates some elements that guide the decision making of the investors in this field. The qualitative nature of the research demands exceptional secondary sources and it is rendered more credible with the inclusion of three relevant primary sources. The analysis …

Essays On The Disposition Effect, Matthew Henriksson Mar 2020

Essays On The Disposition Effect, Matthew Henriksson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation contains two essays that shed new light on the disposition effect – that is, the tendency for investors to be especially eager to realize gains over losses. The first essay combines county-level natural disaster data with individual investor transactions to document an increased disposition effect for investors impacted by a natural disaster. This effect is increasing in disaster severity and decreasing in the length of time following the event, suggesting that extreme natural disasters can significantly influence investor behavior, especially in the short term. These findings are not explained by liquidity needs, tax incentives, or informed trading. The …

Essays On Mortgage Portfolio Diversification, Timothy Patrick Dombrowski Mar 2020

Essays On Mortgage Portfolio Diversification, Timothy Patrick Dombrowski

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Portfolios of mortgage loans played an important role in the Great Recession and continue to compose a material part of bank assets. The distribution of mortgage portfolio returns, and consequently, the risk of these portfolios, is quite distinct even from other fixed income asset classes. This dissertation contains three essays, each aiming to analyze a specific component of risk in mortgage portfolios and role of geographical diversification in reducing this risk.

The first essay investigates how cross-sectional dependence in the underlying properties flows through to the loan returns, and thus, the risk of the portfolio. In addition to demonstrating this …

Pension Fund, Financial Development And Output Growth In Nigeria, Iwegbu Onyebuchi Mar 2020

Pension Fund, Financial Development And Output Growth In Nigeria, Iwegbu Onyebuchi

Bullion

This study examines the indirect effect of pension fund on economic growth in Nigeria through the financial system. Using Autoregressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) model, the study found out that pension fund contribution is effective in stimulating growth through investment in portfolios that yield short term returns; this implies that pension fund contribution cannot on its own without a credible financial system impact on economic growth. The policy implication of this study is for Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) to invest in portfolios with short-term returns; thus, a large chunk of funds invested in federal government securities should be unbundled to other …

Investigating The Impact Of Widening Price Limits On Volatility: The Experience Of The Nigerian Stock Exchange, Mohmmed A. Yadudu Mar 2020

Investigating The Impact Of Widening Price Limits On Volatility: The Experience Of The Nigerian Stock Exchange, Mohmmed A. Yadudu

Bullion

This paper empirically evaluates the impact of return volatility from widening price limits from 5% to 10% on the Nigerian Stock Exchange(NSE) on September 18, 2012 using a Stochastic Volatility model in an event study framework. Using daily trading data from September 2010 to September 2014, the study finds that widening of price limits in the NSE has not increased volatility as feared by some regulators. Stocks with higher free floats and institutional ownership display lower volatility when price limits are widened. This suggests that smaller stock exchanges can improve market efficiency by widening price limits without increasing volatility. The …

Time-Series Momentum: Is It There?, Dashan Huang, Jiangyuan Li, Liyao Wang, Guofu Zhou Mar 2020

Time-Series Momentum: Is It There?, Dashan Huang, Jiangyuan Li, Liyao Wang, Guofu Zhou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Time-series momentum (TSM) refers to the predictability of the past 12-month return on the next one-month return, and is the focus of several recent influential studies. This paper shows, however, that asset-by-asset time-series regressions reveal little evidence of TSM, both in- and out-of-sample. While the t-statistic in a pooled regression appears large, it is not statistically reliable as it is less than the critical values of parametric and non-parametric bootstraps. From an investment perspective, the TSM strategy is profitable, but its performance is virtually the same as that of a similar strategy that is based on historical sample mean and …

Investing With Cryptocurrencies: A Liquidity Constrained Investment Approach, Simon Trimborn, Mingyang Li, Wolfgang Karl Hardle Mar 2020

Investing With Cryptocurrencies: A Liquidity Constrained Investment Approach, Simon Trimborn, Mingyang Li, Wolfgang Karl Hardle

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

Cryptocurrencies have left the dark side of the finance universe and become an object of study for asset and portfolio management. Since they have low liquidity compared to traditional assets, one needs to take into account liquidity issues when adding them to a portfolio. We propose a Liquidity Bounded Risk-return Optimization (LIBRO) approach, which is a combination of risk-return portfolio optimization under liquidity constraints. Cryptocurrencies are included in portfolios formed with stocks of the S&P 100, US Bonds, and commodities. We illustrate the importance of the liquidity constraints in an in-sample and out-of-sample study. LIBRO improves the weight optimization in …
