A Comparative Study Of The Performance Of Commercial Banks, Finance Companies And Merchant Banks In Malaysia, 1990-1998, Kim Teck Yeap

Student Works (2000-2009)

Banking institutions play a substantial role, especially in a developing country like Malaysia, in mobilizing savings and channeling these resources for economic development. The growth of the banking institutions over the past two decades was achieved through the rapid build-up of an extensive branch network, the widening of banking services and the acceleration of credit activities. The focus of this paper is to evaluate the relative performance of banking institutions in Malaysia during the 1990-1998 period, using the CAMEL rating framework. The banking institutions included in this study are the major groups of banking institutions operating in Malaysia, namely commercial …

A Study On The Behaviour Of Selected Macroeconomic Indicators For Malaysia Prior To The Currency Crisis In 1997, Sena Herath Vijitha

Student Works (2000-2009)

This paper attempts to develop an early warning system to predict currency crises that will allow managers not to be caught off-guard when a currency crisis hits the country. It is hoped that with an effective early warning system, managers will have adequate time to construct appropriate marketing and business strategies to counter the negative impact of a currency crisis. This research project examines the macroeconomic data generated by Bank Negara and the Ministry of Finance to see if correlations exist between macroeconomic measures and devaluation prospects as cited in the literature and whether these can be used in the …

The Applicability Of The Dividend-Yield Investment Strategy At The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, Allan, Kim Hon. Ngam

Student Works (2000-2009)

Many theories, techniques and strategies have been developed over the years on how to outperform the stock market. The objective of this research is to apply the "Dividend-Yield" strategy on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange ("KLSE") to ascertain whether using such a strategy would provide superior investment return. Research findings using this strategy on the New York Stock Exchange ("NYSE") have shown favourable results. The data used in this research were sourced primarily from the KLSE, covering a period of 10 years from 1988 to 1997. This research is based on the premise that the investment universe comprises the component …

The Performance Of Bumiputera-Controlled Companies At The Klse, Before And During The Currency Crisis, Nor Azizan Che Embi

Student Works (2000-2009)

The National Development Policy has successfully achieved their objectives to increase the number of Bumiputera companies that can play an important role in the economy. The number of Bumiputera-controlled companies has increased during the booming period (1995-1996). During this period, many Bumiputera individuals showed their capabilities to handle mega projects in Malaysia. In order to achieve the NDP objectives, many Bumiputera companies stick together and listed in the KLSE. However the Asian countries were hit by currency crisis in the middle of 1997. For almost two and half years, Malaysia experienced a turbulent economy caused by currency crisis. In order …

The Effects Of Selective Capital Controls On Malaysia's Sustainable Economic Growth, Seok Foon Ong Jan 2000

The Effects Of Selective Capital Controls On Malaysia's Sustainable Economic Growth, Seok Foon Ong

Student Works (2000-2009)

The adoption of selective capital controls by Malaysia since September 1, 1998 remains a controversial issue. Among the opponents, selective capital controls would retard the economic growth of the country. The proponents argue that this measure is necessary to aid the government in regaining autonomy in monetary policy formulation and stabilizing the economy. The objectives of the study are: (i) to understand the contributory role played by the selective capital controls in coping with the recent currency crisis, (ii) to examine the appropriateness and effectiveness of the selective capital controls in relation to the fixed exchange rate, government fiscal and …

The Impact Of Macroeconomic Variables On The Performance Of The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (Klse), Muhummud Iqbal Khadaroo

Student Works (2000-2009)

Using the Pearson correlation analysis, factor analysis and regression analysis, this paper examines the impact of macroeconomic variables such as money supply, nominal interest rate, inflation, real activity and international reserves flow on the performance of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE). Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the nature of the relationship between the macroeconomic variables and the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI). Factor analysis was used to identify the subset of variables accounting for movement in the KLCI while regression analysis was used to determine the amount of the variation in the KLCI explained by the macroeconomic …

A Comparative Analysis Of Conventional Banking System And Islamic Banking System In Malaysia In Relation To Loan Repayments, Baharin Salim @ Abdullah Jan 2000

A Comparative Analysis Of Conventional Banking System And Islamic Banking System In Malaysia In Relation To Loan Repayments, Baharin Salim @ Abdullah

Student Works (2000-2009)

The birth of Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (81MB) in 1983 symbolized the Malaysian Government's initiative in establishing an Islamic banking system. After 17 years of operation in a market mainly dominated by conventional banks, BIMB has still unable to achieve its target of capturing a significant portion of this market. In this paper, the writer tries to observe the main differences between the conventional and Islamic banking system Malaysia in relation to loan repayments. Through this observation, strengths and weaknesses of the Islamic banking system can be identified. Recommendations can be made to help enhancing BIMB's performance in achieving the …

Economic Value Added : Superior Measurement Of Shareholders' Value, Amalanathan Thomas Jan 2000

Economic Value Added : Superior Measurement Of Shareholders' Value, Amalanathan Thomas

Student Works (2000-2009)

In 1961, Prof. Franco Modigliani and Prof. Merton H. Miller (MM) said in their article Dividend Policy, Growth and The Evaluation of Shares: "To measure corporate performance for market capitalization, companies should consider earnings, cash flows, dividends and investment opportunities as alternatives". Stern Stewart, an advocate of Economic Value Added (EVA) approach to shareholder value understands the issues raised under the MM model which has led him to the view that "free cash flows is cash from operations that is available, attributable to both leaders and shareholders. In other words, it is the cash that is free for distribution to …

Measuring Transformation: Assessing And Improving The Impact Of Microcredit, Susy Cheston, Larry Reed Sep 1999

Measuring Transformation: Assessing And Improving The Impact Of Microcredit, Susy Cheston, Larry Reed

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

The question of impact assessment is one that continues to plague microcredit practitioners. Some contend that existing impact assessment studies are meaningless, while others maintain they are absolutely necessary. The authors of this paper advocate a renewed focus on the transformation of clients and their communities, as well as a new impact assessment model to support and document this focus. They outline the key principles for conducting impact audits that include measurement of transformation among clients. They also review a series of practitioner-oriented impact assessment tools and outline future challenges for practitioners, donors, and academics in improving performance through impact …

Microenterprise Development In The Heartland: Self-Employment As A Self-Sufficiency Strategy For Tanf Recipients In Iowa 1993-1998, Salome Raheim, Jason J. Friedman Sep 1999

Microenterprise Development In The Heartland: Self-Employment As A Self-Sufficiency Strategy For Tanf Recipients In Iowa 1993-1998, Salome Raheim, Jason J. Friedman

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

There has been a significant interest in the microenterprise movement regarding its effectiveness as a welfare-to-work strategy. A decade's worth of program results, demonstration projects, and research strongly suggest that the benefits of microenterprise development for welfare recipients outweigh the costs and risks. The state of Iowa has been a leader in promoting microenterprise development as a welfare-to-work strategy. Iowa was the first state in the US to incorporate microenterprise-development training as an eligible activity in its welfare-reform program. Since 1993, the Iowa Department of Human Services (IDHS) has contracted with the Institute for Social and Economic Development (ISED), a …

Are Grameen Replications Sustainable, And Do They Reach The Poor?: The Case Of Card Rural Bank In The Philippines, Hans Dieter Seibel, Dolores Torres Sep 1999

Are Grameen Replications Sustainable, And Do They Reach The Poor?: The Case Of Card Rural Bank In The Philippines, Hans Dieter Seibel, Dolores Torres

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

The Grameen Bank in Bangladesh is known worldwide for its success in providing credit to the poor. However, subsequent replications of its methodology in other parts of the world have been less successful. Is there really an infallible solution that works everywhere, and is outreach to the poor compatible with sustainability? A Grameen replicator in the Philippines, the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD), has recently set itself firmly on the path to sustainability by becoming a formal sector, rural bank—the first credit NGO in the country to do so. During the period, from 1993 to June 1999, CARD's …

Village Banking Dynamics Study: Evidence From Seven Programs, Judith Painter, Barbara Mknelly Sep 1999

Village Banking Dynamics Study: Evidence From Seven Programs, Judith Painter, Barbara Mknelly

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

The primary question examined in this study is whether client loans grow or stagnate over time. Loan growth is important to financial sustainability and is also a proxy for positive impact. The relationship between loan growth and a variety of factors--program loan and savings policies, site selection, membership dynamics--are explored in the context of seven village bank programs. The study concludes that on average, loan size did not stagnant but increased steadily, although at a rate lower than the original village bank model projections. Only programs that allowed non-poverty level loans (loans above US$300) approached the original loan growth rate. …

The Impact Of Outcome-Based Assessment On Microenterprise Programs, Margaret A. Johnson, Umasundari Akella, Jule Lalande Sep 1999

The Impact Of Outcome-Based Assessment On Microenterprise Programs, Margaret A. Johnson, Umasundari Akella, Jule Lalande

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

The changing environment in the nonprofit sector has subjected microenterprise programs to a new paradigm that emphasizes rationality principles. These principles ask practitioners to increase their outcomes while minimizing costs and to demonstrate that they are doing so with outcome-assessment measurements. This paper presents a case study of what happened to 11 microenterprise programs that adopted outcome assessment. Factors affecting the adoption of outcome assessment were changing norms in the nonprofit sector, demands from state legislators for information on program outcomes, and mandates from funders. A funding formula was implemented; program responses included going along, adopting practices to fit the …

The Microcredit Summit's Challenge: Working Toward Institutional Financial Self-Sufficiency While Maintaining A Commitment To Serving The Poorest Families, David S. Gibbons, Jennifer W. Meehan Sep 1999

The Microcredit Summit's Challenge: Working Toward Institutional Financial Self-Sufficiency While Maintaining A Commitment To Serving The Poorest Families, David S. Gibbons, Jennifer W. Meehan

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Institutional financial self-sufficiency (IFS) is necessary for a microfinance institution (MFI) to obtain the large amount of funds required to reach and benefit truly large numbers of the poor and poorest households. There is no necessary trade-off between serving large numbers of the poorest households and the attainment of IFS by an MFI, as proven by the case studies in this paper. Cost-effective identification of the poor and the poorest women is essential to maximizing the effectiveness and efficiency of providing microfinance services to them. If the service is not exclusively for the poor and the poorest, it should be …

The Fundamental And Non-Fundamental Components Of Stock Prices: The Role Of Time-Varying Expected Inflation, Maosen Zhong Jul 1999

The Fundamental And Non-Fundamental Components Of Stock Prices: The Role Of Time-Varying Expected Inflation, Maosen Zhong

Doctoral Dissertations

I derive testable implications of fundamental and non-fundamental components of stock prices. In order to control for the role of time-varying expected inflation and to be able to perform reasonable empirical tests, I use a nominal (rather than a real) interpretation of the present-value model (PVM), whereby nominal interest rates approximate expected inflation. I conjecture that the fundamental and non-fundamental components represent the permanent and temporary components of stock prices, respectively. A series of cointegration analysis over the annual period 1871–1997 confirms my conjecture for the model with time-varying expected inflation. Various fundamental and non-fundamental exclusion tests indicate that both …

A Political Model Of Monetary Policy With Application To The Real Fed Funds Rate, Tony Caporale, Kevin B. Grier Oct 1998

A Political Model Of Monetary Policy With Application To The Real Fed Funds Rate, Tony Caporale, Kevin B. Grier

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We construct an empirical model of U.S. monetary policy assuming that the Federal Reserve is an ordinary federal bureaucracy. We use the real Federal Funds rate as our policy measure and show the existence of significant executive, legislative, and bureaucratic influence on the real rate of interest from 1961 to 1996. We find that presidential party is an adequate statistical measure of executive influence and that the voting scores of the Senate Banking Committee leadership best represent legislative influence. We argue that political changes cause systematic and predictable changes in monetary policy.

Market Reaction To Seasoned Equity Offerings: The Relevance Of Leverage, Growth Opportunities, And Corporate Structure, Mojib U. Ahmed Oct 1998

Market Reaction To Seasoned Equity Offerings: The Relevance Of Leverage, Growth Opportunities, And Corporate Structure, Mojib U. Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Empirical work on the market's reaction to seasoned equity offerings has rarely considered the impact of the issuing firm's leverage level or its corporate structure. This work is an attempt to include these parameters in order to better understand the market's reaction to such issue announcements.

The current finance literature recognizes the fact that leverage plays an important role in assessing the value of the firm. Leverage has both negative and positive impacts on the value of a firm (McConnell and Servaes, 1995), and thus, has both negative and positive impacts on the market's reaction to seasoned equity offerings. This …

A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The Determinants Of Corporate Share Repurchases, Kenneth M. Washer Jul 1998

A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The Determinants Of Corporate Share Repurchases, Kenneth M. Washer

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this study is to determine which motives play a significant role in determining the extent of a firm's repurchasing activity. For firms repurchasing through the open market, the motives include taking advantage of perceived undervaluation, increasing financial leverage, distributing cash to shareholders, and reducing agency costs. For firms using a tender offer, the motives include taking advantage of perceived undervaluation and having the ability to significantly increase financial leverage. Also, the hypothesis that the perceived undervaluation motive is stronger for smaller firms is tested. Three censored regression models are employed, and each model's explanatory variables represent commonly …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Stock Index Cash And Futures Markets: A Cointegration Approach, Michael A. Pizzi, Andrew J. Economopoulos, Heather M. O'Neill May 1998

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Stock Index Cash And Futures Markets: A Cointegration Approach, Michael A. Pizzi, Andrew J. Economopoulos, Heather M. O'Neill

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

The existence of price discovery, market efficiency and market stability associated with spot and futures markets continues as a prominent discussion among academics, practitioners and regulators. Numerous papers examine the role of price discovery in the futures markets for various types of commodities and financial assets. Generally, the studies by Garbade and Silber (1983), Herbst, McCormack and West (1987), Kawaller, Koch and Koch (1987) and Schroeder and Goodwin (1991) indicate that price discovery occurs more significantly in the futures market compared to the cash market.

The Fischer Black Hypothesis: Some Time-Series Evidence, Tony Caporale, Barbara Mckiernan Jan 1998

The Fischer Black Hypothesis: Some Time-Series Evidence, Tony Caporale, Barbara Mckiernan

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We estimate an ARCH-M model to analyze the relationship between the conditional standard deviation of real gross national product (GNP) and its growth rate for the period 1871-1993. We find that variability significantly increases output growth rates. In addition, impulse response functions show that the effect of variability on growth rates is dynamic. These results provide evidence in favor of Black's (1987) business cycle hypothesis.

Central Bank Of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin, December 1997, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Statistical Bulletin

Financial data is compiled from documents like balance sheets and financial statements, which are designed for legal and administrative purposes rather than economic analysis. The Financial Statistics Office compiles the analytical CBN balance sheet without major reclassifications or rearrangements. However, due to problems with imprecise definitions, improper classification, inadequate sectorization, inaccuracies, irregular valuation procedures, and errors in data compilation, major revisions were made. The Computer Services Department generates summary and detailed analytical balance sheets based on the end-month BANKOS 302 of the CBN, Lagos branch. The consolidation of accounts of monetary authorities and deposit money banks produces monetary survey accounts. …

Stock Market And Macroeconomic Policies: New Evidence For The Pacific Basin Countries, Unro Lee Dec 1997

Stock Market And Macroeconomic Policies: New Evidence For The Pacific Basin Countries, Unro Lee

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

This article investigates whether the stock markets of the Pacific Basin countries of Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan are informationally efficient with respect to macroeconomic policies. Granger causality tests are utilized in the context of a Vector Error Correction Model to test the relationship between aggregate stock prices and monetary and fiscal policies. The findings indicate that the stock markets of all four countries are not efficient with respect to both macroeconomic policies. These findings are different from those of other articles focusing on major industrialized countries. Rejection of market efficiency may be attributed to the unique structure …
