Corporate Social Responsibility And Earnings Reporting, Mary F. Calegari, T. Chotigeat, M. A. Harjoto
Corporate Social Responsibility And Earnings Reporting, Mary F. Calegari, T. Chotigeat, M. A. Harjoto
Faculty Publications
Despite increasing interests on corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities among managers, the relationship between CSR and firm value through earnings reporting quality is still unclear. Absence of a strong positive effect of CSR on firm value has led researchers to believe that CSR is a res ult of a principal-agent issue between shareholders and managers. This study argues CSR represents a corporate culture that influences how a corporation reports its earnings. CSR influ ences earnings reporting ·instead ofearnings reporting drives CSR to delude shareholders. CSR induces better earnings reporting quality, therefore, CSR has an indirect but positive effect on firm …

The Role Of Fair Value Accounting In Bank Failures: 2001-2010, Jacob Edward Eugene Spring
The Role Of Fair Value Accounting In Bank Failures: 2001-2010, Jacob Edward Eugene Spring
CMC Senior Theses
Over the Past two and a half years banks have failed at the fastest pace since the Great Depression. These rapidly mounting bank failures have rekindled a debate surrounding the use of fair value accounting, with many arguing that fair value has exacerbated the severity of the recent financial crisis through asset devaluation and the forced sale of assets in an effort to meet capital requirements. This paper seeks to test if an entity’s exposure to fair value which includes assets available-for-sale, trading assets, and loans held-for-sale as a percent of total assets increases the probability of bank failure through …
Airline Bankruptcy: The Determining Factors Leading To An Airline's Decline, Jason Tolkin
Airline Bankruptcy: The Determining Factors Leading To An Airline's Decline, Jason Tolkin
CMC Senior Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine what the critical factors are to an airline’s financial turmoil, leading ultimately to a bankruptcy filing. Over the past decade, the airline industries’ performance has been dismal, leading to 20 bankruptcy filings. As competition increases, it is crucial for airlines to know which core business areas are essential to success. This paper identifies 8 specific industry metrics that are used to compare airlines, revealing where certain airlines falter and others shine. Some of these metrics are later applied to a case study examining Trans World Airlines (TWA) and American Airlines (AA), highlighting …
Structural Analysis Of Affect In The Pre-Purchase Context, Rosemary R. Seva, Henry Been Lirn Duh, Martin G. Helander
Structural Analysis Of Affect In The Pre-Purchase Context, Rosemary R. Seva, Henry Been Lirn Duh, Martin G. Helander
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Previous studies on consumption related affect did not identify specific components in the pre-purchase context. This article reviewed theoretical bases of affect and its relationship to product judgment and determined the components and structure of pre-purchase affect. Field studies were conducted to gather an initial list of affect experienced before purchasing “highinvolvement” products. An initial list of 94 pre-purchase affect was identified and trimmed down to 18 after further statistical analysis. A second study was conducted to determine the structure of the pre-purchase emotion set (PES) derived from the first study. Multidimensional scaling was used and four clusters of emotion …
Corruption In Contemporary Nigeria, Gabriel K. Afolabi
Corruption In Contemporary Nigeria, Gabriel K. Afolabi
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Events in contemporary Nigeria point to the fact that corruption is a cankerworm that has eaten into the fabric of every facet of national life. Public officials demand payment of ransom before and/or after performing their legitimate functions. Businesspeople shortchange their customers through unfair dealings, while law-enforcement agents demand bribes and collaborate with fraudulent elements in the society. Employee theft is a common occurrence in many organizations. This study focuses on the nature of corruption, as well as causes, and strategies to adopt in curbing this disease in contemporary Nigeria. It concludes on the need to adopt a multidimensional approach, …
Teaching The Budgeting Process Using A Spreadsheet Template, Benoit Boyer
Teaching The Budgeting Process Using A Spreadsheet Template, Benoit Boyer
WCBT Faculty Publications
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how to use a template to teach the budgeting process and how to use the same template to do a sensitivity analysis once the budget process is completed. The template can be used as-is by non-accounting majors. They just have to fill in all of their assumptions by replacing the red numbers. The template can be locked so that students cannot modify the formulas by mistake. Simply protect the worksheet (Review tab > Protect Sheet) and students will be able to only change the assumptions. Accounting majors are shown how to build their …
Tunneling As An Incentive For Earnings Management During The Ipo Process In China, Jiwei Wang, Joseph Aharony, Hongqi Yuan
Tunneling As An Incentive For Earnings Management During The Ipo Process In China, Jiwei Wang, Joseph Aharony, Hongqi Yuan
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Using a sample of 185 Chinese IPO firms listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange during the period 1999-2001, we show that related-party (RP) sales of goods and services could be used opportunistically to manage earnings upwards in the pre-IPO period. We also provide evidence that such behavior may be motivated by the prospect of tunneling opportunities in the post-IPO period, i.e., exploiting economic resources from minority shareholders for the benefit of the parent company. We provide evidence of one such opportunistic tunneling tool: non-repayment by Chinese parent companies of net outstanding corporate loans made to them by their newly listed …
Could Decision Trees Help Improve Farm Service Agency Lending Decisions?, Benjamin P. Foster, Jozef Zurada, Douglas K. Barney
Could Decision Trees Help Improve Farm Service Agency Lending Decisions?, Benjamin P. Foster, Jozef Zurada, Douglas K. Barney
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This study examines whether a statistically derived decision tree could serve as a means to improve U.S.A. Farm Service Agency lending decisions. The study is a substantial extension and reanalysis of an earlier work by Barney, Graves and Johnson, (1999). Results indicate that a decision tree could be a valuable tool for Farm Service Agency employees in their lending decisions. The decision tree provides as good or better predictive accuracy than neural networks and logistic regression models at reasonable cutoff levels of Type II to Type I costs of lending. The decision tree also meets the transparency criteria for Farm …
Is The Special Purpose Vehicles Act Responsible For The Decline In Npl Ratios?, Stephanie L. Chan, Andrew Adrian Y. Pua
Is The Special Purpose Vehicles Act Responsible For The Decline In Npl Ratios?, Stephanie L. Chan, Andrew Adrian Y. Pua
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study aimed to determine if the SPV Act was actually responsible for the marked decline in NPL ratios this past four years. Using aggregated data for the entire Philippine Banking System, segregated according to type of bank, results suggest that the SPV Act was not responsible for the decline in the NPL ratios but may be attributed to a downward trend in the loan to asset ratio where values are getting closer to the interval for which NPL ratios are at a minimum, economic sluggishness as measured by deviations from the long run trend of macroeconomic variables, and seasonal …

Nigeria’S Debt Overhang (1960-2005): A Critical Revisit, Solomon A. Adebola
DLSU Business & Economics Review
A general global trend up to the 1980’s has been for nations to rely substantially on external loans and aids for economic sustenance and technological development. This is particularly true for less developed countries (LDC). Unfortunately for these LDCs, their debts have gone beyond the countries’ capacity to repay. The debts have, for many such developing countries, been on a perpetual geometrical increase. Such countries have ended up with a debt overhang, with its detrimental impacts on the countries’ economic growth and social development. This research note gives a treatise on the theoretical framework of a debt overhang, and a …

The Secondary Market For Gift Cards And The Role Of Corporate Bankruptcy Risk, Kaitlyn A. Desai
The Secondary Market For Gift Cards And The Role Of Corporate Bankruptcy Risk, Kaitlyn A. Desai
CMC Senior Theses
The website, Plastic Jungle, is taking advantage of the rapidly growing gift card phenomena by creating a secondary market that enables consumers to buy, sell, and exchange gift cards online at a discount. This paper examines the relationship between this secondary gift card market and the corporate bankruptcy risk of companies with gift cards listed on the market. When a company issues a gift card, the card is unsecured debt and the cardholder becomes an unsecured creditor to the company. This paper investigates whether the cardholder acts similarly to other unsecured creditors or as someone who is merely holding another …

Corporate Governance In China: No Quick Fix, No Fixed Solution, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
China offers a multitude of business opportunities, but international investors often find themselves stumped with a range of issues, many of which boil down to the country's distinct system of corporate governance. Here, the lines between interests and relationships are less clear-cut, and links to the government seem to serve as a proxy to accountability. This is a system that exists for a reason, said TJ Wong at SMU's Ho Bee Professorship in Chinese Economy and Business lecture series. However, foreign investors, used to international norms of transparency, are calling this into question.

Cornerstone 3 Reports : Interdisciplinary Informatics
The primary aim of our project is to develop an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platform that enables students at Pace to understand how different interdisciplinary areas in cross-unit and/or cross-enterprise decision making are related. ERP can help us do this since it allows a firm to automate and integrate its business processes, share common data and practices across the entire enterprise, and provide and access information in a real-time environment.

Public companies in the United States face a new challenge. As set forth in its roadmap for implementation, the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) is considering the potential use of financial statements prepared in accordance with international financial reporting standards (“IFRS”.) The chief goal of these global standards is to establish a uniform system to improve comparability of companies’ financial positions. For decades, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”) have been the framework of financial statement preparation for public companies in the U.S. The movement to IFRS represents an unprecedented change in the basis of financial reporting, since IFRS would supersede …

What’s the best way to monitor listed Chinese companies effectively? Should the Chinese government introduce more stringent corporate governance regulations to keep managers on their toes? Forget it. According to a research study by SMU accounting professor Wang Jiwei, the government is better off ditching its little black book of corporate governance reform and focusing on other ways to get results. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Asian economies are showing signs of recovery, and the stock markets have rebounded, leading to optimism that the worst of the economic crisis is over. However, few are expecting a quick return to the boom years, for weakness still persists in major economies while uncertainties remain in others. Nevertheless, for those Singapore-based regional financial industry players speaking at a recent seminar organised by the Sim Kee Boon Institute of Financial Economics, they are picking up lessons learned, seeing beyond the near-term worries, and finding growth opportunities.

Corporate governance, via the active monitoring of a company’s management by its board of directors, is an accepted practice. For publicly-listed companies controlled by families, the general perception is independent directors should actively take up the mantle of watching out for the interests and rights of minority shareholders. But, is there a possibility whereby over-zealous monitoring might crimp the growth of these family-run companies, thus, doing more harm than good? According to a new study: Yes, it does!
How The Madoff Fraud Could Affect Your Cpa Practice, Stephen Scarpati
How The Madoff Fraud Could Affect Your Cpa Practice, Stephen Scarpati
WCBT Faculty Publications
With an estimated $65 billion lost from trust funds, retirement plans, pensions, investment funds, inheritance monies, and nonprofit organizations, many people have been adversely affected by the Ponzi scheme perpetrated by Bernard L. Madoff. When you combine a lot of lost money with a lot of angry people, the result is a lot of lawsuits. The breadth of those lawsuits will encompass all associated with the affected organizations--including CPAs. Those messages were loud and clear at the May 27, 2009, breakfast symposium "Are CPAs the Next Madoff Victims? The Accountant's Liability," sponsored by The CPA Journal.

Perceived Organizational Effectiveness Of Labor Unions In The Banking, Hotel, And Manufacturing Industries, Divina M. Edralin
DLSU Business & Economics Review
To determine the extent of influence of the organization’s context and structure factors on the perceived effectiveness of labor unions in the banking, hotel, and manufacturing industries in the National Capital Region, 88 local unions consisting of 772 rank-and-file and supervisory union members from 82 firms were covered. It is evident from the results that the level of union effectiveness as perceived by the members is a function of two major organizational factors, namely, context and structure. Moreover, there are significant differences in the average level of effectiveness rating of unions per industry.

Law Making In The Guise Of Procedures: Placing Hurdles To The Right Of Appeal To The National Labor Relations Commission, Emmanuel O. Sales
DLSU Business & Economics Review
It is a legal given that the power to make laws or new norms lies with Congress and this power, granted by the Constitution, cannot be shared with or should not be encroached upon by another branch of government or an instrumentality of a branch. Rule making to implement the law or the promulgation of procedures to establish the process of enforcing rights is not always done subordinate to or in accordance with law. This study posits that the 2005 Rules of Procedure of the National Labor Relations Commission, specifically on the requirements for taking an appeal, is a case …

Innovation Process And Performance In Small- To Medium-Sized Firms: A Conceptual Framework, Edgardo S. Bolinao
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study maps out the innovation process in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that can fundamentally affect business performance. The development of the conceptual framework can be used to encourage and enhance successful innovation management for SMEs. Overall, effective innovation is based on managing this process as a whole and on building up capacity and competency at each stage in the innovation. The framework put forth in this study is being proposed to be used as template for the development of a management development program for SMEs’ owner-managers and as a practical tool for diagnosing SMEs’ support systems.
What Is “The Learning Filipino Firm”?, Raymund B. Habaradas
What Is “The Learning Filipino Firm”?, Raymund B. Habaradas
DLSU Business & Economics Review
“The learning Filipino firm” can be classified into three types, namely the reactive firm, which is a reluctant learner; the adaptive firm, which is an eager learner; and the generative firm, which is a dynamic learner. This typology is based on the hypothesis that a firm’s learning style and its innovative capability is influenced by its organizational design. Among the key dimensions that must be considered are as follows: (a) organizational strategy, (b) organizational structure, and (c) organizational culture. These dimensions are closely intertwined, and, therefore, collectively influence a firm’s ability to constantly renew itself.
The Impact Of Selected Corporate Governance Variables In Mitigating Earnings Management In The Philippines, Mc Reynald S. Banderlipe Ii
The Impact Of Selected Corporate Governance Variables In Mitigating Earnings Management In The Philippines, Mc Reynald S. Banderlipe Ii
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Given the increasing importance of corporate governance in the Philippines, this study attempts to explain the role of selected governance variables related to a company’s board of directors in mitigating earnings management in the country. Using the financial statements of publicly listed companies and a modified measurement model, the findings revealed that the holding of multiple directorial positions by the independent directors, and the managerial ownership of the board are significant enough to limit the incentives for earnings management. Moreover, firm size and return on assets were identified to have explanatory significance among the controlling factors.
Towards An Innovation Model In Teaching Management, Ernesto L. Bumatay
Towards An Innovation Model In Teaching Management, Ernesto L. Bumatay
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study discusses an innovation to management teaching called Learning-Activity-Based Experience Model (LAB-E Model). The perspective is that the entire learning process in a course will be experienced through sets of activities designed by the faculty. These sets or clusters of problems and activities are unique to the contents and objectives of the course as well as to the varying needs and capabilities of the students. Through management activities created and designed by the faculty, learning takes place. This innovative teaching model incorporates other common teaching methodologies which include small group presentation, facilitated discussion of cases, and lecture-discussion approach.
