The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status And Emotional Gratification For Consumers Who Purchase Overtly Branded (Overtly Designer) Goods, Sarah Siracusa
The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status And Emotional Gratification For Consumers Who Purchase Overtly Branded (Overtly Designer) Goods, Sarah Siracusa
Fordham Business Student Research Journal
When examining the reasoning behind a consumer’s choice of luxury purchase, we rely largely on consumer psychology. One important psychological factor is the concept of needs. Consumers of different socioeconomic backgrounds have different needs, thus influencing what they choose to purchase. While past research has focused on intrinsic and extrinsic aspirations, and the relationship between aspiration and luxury brand preference in predicting luxury consumption, there has not yet been a study conducted focusing on the relationship between socioeconomic status and emotional gratification of purchasing overtly branded (overtly designer) goods in America. After surveying participants in three socioeconomic income groups, it …
Countering Counterfeits: An Investigation Of Message-Frame And Message-Focus Effects On Persuasion, Caroline Dahlgren
Countering Counterfeits: An Investigation Of Message-Frame And Message-Focus Effects On Persuasion, Caroline Dahlgren
Fordham Business Student Research Journal
The prevalence of counterfeit products throughout the world has greatly increased over the course of the past two decades. These goods span a wide array of industries and vary greatly in quality, aesthetics, and price. There have been reports of counterfeits in nearly every sector of the economy; counterfeit goods include airline parts, dry wall, handbags, pharmaceuticals, and baby food (International Chamber of Commerce, 2008). Each industry engages in its own battle with these products and counterfeiters, in hopes of protecting its intellectual property, consumers, and its bottom line. The roots of the counterfeiting industry are deeply intertwined with various …
Three Essays On The Influence Of Formal Institutions On Entrepreneurship., Michael David Crum
Three Essays On The Influence Of Formal Institutions On Entrepreneurship., Michael David Crum
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is composed of three essays in which I examine the influence of formal institutions on entrepreneurs and new firms. In the first essay, "The Influence of Institutions on the Likelihood of Self-Employment: A Multilevel Analysis," I examine how institutions at the country-level are related to the likelihood that individuals in those country are self-employed. Country-level measures of formal institutions are paired with individual-level data on self-employment from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (Reynolds et al., 2005). Using the Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom of the World index and the Heritage Foundation's Index of Economic Freedom separately as measures of institutions, …

El Paso Economic Development System Review & Recommendations, Edward Feser
Edward J Feser
This report, commissioned by the City of El Paso, recommends that El Paso city government undertake a substantial reform of its economic development effort and that public and private sector stakeholders in the broader El Paso region mobilize to create an organizational vehicle for the kind of public‐private collaboration that is driving innovative economic development in many other major city‐regions in the United States. The analysis also calls for a stronger integration of physical, land use, and economic development planning activities in the city and region, consistent with a trend in international best practice in local and regional economic development.
“Impact” In 3d—Maximizing Impact Through Transactional Clinics, Praveen Kosuri
“Impact” In 3d—Maximizing Impact Through Transactional Clinics, Praveen Kosuri
All Faculty Scholarship
In speaking about “impact” clinical legal education, it is almost always exclusively as litigation—innocence projects, representing Guantanamo detainees, human rights concerns, environmental issues. Though these clinical efforts target different societal ills, all try to use the legal system as a catalyst for change. Rarely do clinicians invoke the word “impact” in the same manner in discussing transactional legal work much less transactional clinics. Yet transactional clinics can and do perform impact work. This article describes the current landscape of transactional clinics, the distinct evolution of community economic development clinics from small business and organizations clinics and argues that both can …

Returning To Ulysses: The Need For Ireland's Higher Education Institutions To Re-Imagine The Provision Of Entrepreneurship Education, Thomas Cooney, Kathleen Farrell, Paul Hannon
Conference papers
This paper is a detailed analysis of entrepreneurship education in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on the island of Ireland based on a survey of all twenty-six institutions. The paper examines the number and types of courses and activities currently being offered to students and concludes that the vast majority of the existing provision is quite traditional in its approach. It is further argued that entrepreneurship education needs to be re-imagined if it is to meet the needs of Ireland’s current economic and social challenges, and that educators should seek inspiration from some of the island’s most creative artists from its …

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications
Probing the changing makeup of American college campuses, Adult Children of Immigrant Entrepreneurs: Memories and Influences offers unparalleled insight into the journeys of today’s graduate students born to immigrant entrepreneur parents.
Through interviews with 40 graduate students attending Massachusetts colleges from across the country, Adult Children of Immigrant Entrepreneurs unearths the unique challenges, skills and propensities engendered by growing up in a household where at least one parent ran a business. It also reveals that the students feel a deep-seated desire to give back to the immigrant communities into which they were born and which helped to mold their identities.

Hudson, Ohio, has all the charm of a Connecticut watercolor. A quaint clock tower stands on the village green. A little further up the road, the chiseled buildings of Western Reserve Academy, founded in 1826, dot the landscape. Red-bricked shops make downtown window shopping a weekend event. If Jimmy Stewart showed up as George Bailey, residents wouldn’t bat an eyelash. Tucked into this historic enclave is one of the oldest cooking schools in America, the Western Reserve School of Cooking.
Originally founded by Zona Spray, and now run by Catherine St. John, the intimate institution has been a destination for …

Tattered: Why The Tibetan Carpet Industry Of Nepal Is Declining, And How To Mend It, Dustin Becker
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Tibetan carpet industry of Nepal, once one of the country's leading exports, is quickly becoming unprofitable and uncompetitive compared to regional competitors. This is a trend that started over a decade ago, but requires renewed focus due to current alarming trends. My objective was to uncover why carpet manufacturers in Nepal are suffering from a decline in sales, and what separates the manufacturers who are still in business from those who are not. I stayed in the community of Boudha, where most of the carpet business owners live or work, and conducted interviews and electronic written correspondences with several …

Microfinance is the wunderkind of many development experts. Its presence is overwhelming in Cameroon but many Cameroonians choose instead to put their hard earned money in the informal financial sector. Heavily rooted in cultural traditions of the West Region, this informal financial sector is where the poorest Cameroonians gain access to credit – not necessarily the “village money lender” as is assumed by many scholars of microfinance. For women, who have the least access to credit, these institutions of informal credit are particularly important. Relying primarily on a survey administered in the markets of Bafoussam, Cameroon, this study explores the …

How do businesses legitimize their natural environmental strategic initiatives? In this research, we are concerned with how managerial interpretations of natural environmental issues predict natural environmental strategic action related to firm innovativeness in SMEs. Results from this study will provide managers with a greater understanding of the benefits from a natural environmental initiative. The research questions that are addressed include: (1) Does the legitimization of the natural environment in an SME positively affect firm innovativeness? (2) What benefits are associated with socially embedding natural environmental policies? and (3) How do the strategic issue and social embeddedness theories predict how a …

Manuscripts are desk rejected when they do not fit the mission of the journal or are too underdeveloped to benefit from the review process. In such cases, two members of the editorial team go through the manuscript and provide a developmental letter to author or authors to advance the article further. This helps free up the time of editors and reviewers to concentrate on the most promising manuscripts.

Leaders Of Today Are Challenged By Generation X Workforce Retention, Joyce K. Kutin
Joyce K Kutin RN, MSN, MOL
Many organizations today are comprised of a culturally diverse workforce. In addition to organizational diversity related to gender, ethnicity, race, or religious beliefs, there are also four different generations working side by side. Today’s workforce includes the Silent Generation, the Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y. The Silent Generation is known for their lifestyle approach of consistency, uniformity, conformity, law and order, hard work and playing by the rules. Baby Boomers were the first generation to grow up with television; they were the first to have broad access to news, issues, advertising, and a variety of programming. Generation X …

Steve Jobs can teach us a thing or two about customer loyalty. Though Apple products have sometimes fallen short of expectations, Apple customers think nothing of standing in line for hours just to get their hands on the company's latest. According to Valarie Zeithaml, a David S Van Pelt Family distinguished professor of marketing at the University of North Carolina, recent financials show that Apple is achieving US$4,406 per annum sales per square foot – far higher than brands such as the US$3,000 per annum sales per square foot of premier global jeweller Tiffany and US$1,700 per annum sales per …

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make sizeable contributions to the economic success of nations. Research concerning the internationalization of SMEs is available in the context of developed economies but less is can be found dealing specifically with the entrepreneurial behavior and international expansion of SMEs in emerging markets such as India. This research extends the literature addressing the relationships surrounding the internationalization of SMEs in India as related to entrepreneurial behavior, firm resources, and commitment to internationalization. Entrepreneurial orientation, a commitment to internationalization, and the ability to leverage human capital influence the international success of Indian SMEs, based on the …

The rousing sea stories are all here: The dramas of near-death battles, the sickening tragedy of lovers and friends lost to the waters - but this is not the whole story. This collection represents an extraordinary holistic view of Alaskan fishing: Not just the dying, but the living; not just the obsessive doing of fishing, but the passionate being as well. Readers will understand why so many are hooked, unwilling or unable to leave this uncommon life. Collectively, the 15 fisher-writers in this anthology have fished cod, halibut, salmon, crab, and herring. Some have fished commercially for several seasons; others …

SLOW GROWTH AND UNCERTAINTY
U.S. Macroeconomic Outlook
A lingering financial crisis, economic shocks, and economic policy have combined to derail the self-sustaining recovery in the United State economy. Growth has slowed to a crawl and the risk of another recession runs high. What has happened? To begin with, the Great Recession of 2008 and 2009 continues to impact the construction sector and state and local government employment. New housing construction remains depressed, causing construction employment to drift downward. With tax revenues below pre-recession levels, state and local government employment continues a steady decline. The market also continues to face unexpected …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We examined the effect of entrepreneurs’communal orientation and social capital on entrepreneurs’ acquisition of resources, and the cost of raising those resources. Using an errors-in-variables estimation in a sample of 242 Ugandan entrepreneurs from Kampala, we find that shared identity is positively associated with the quantity of resources raised by entrepreneurs, whereas shared identity and communal orientation are associated with a higher cost of raising resources. Further, communal orientation positively moderates the relationship between kin composition and the quantity of resources raised; whereas communal orientation negatively moderates the relationship between trust, shared identity, and resources. In contrast, a high communal …
