Endogenous Market Choice, Listing Regulations, And Ipo Spread: Evidence From The London Stock Exchange, Hafiz Hoque, John Doukas Jan 2024

Endogenous Market Choice, Listing Regulations, And Ipo Spread: Evidence From The London Stock Exchange, Hafiz Hoque, John Doukas

Finance Faculty Publications

This study examines the endogenous market choice and its impact on underwriter spread if Alternative Investment Market (AIM) IPOs that meet Main Market (MM) listing requirements had issued equity in the MM during the 1995–2021 period. We find that the spread is 1.33% higher in the AIM than the MM for IPO listings that meet the MM listing requirements. This finding suggests that AIM companies, meeting the MM listing requirements, could have saved more than £100 million by going public through the MM than the AIM market. We also find that this spread differential is attributed to the issuing firms' …

Expansionary Federal Monetary Policy And U.S. Banks’ Risk Profiles During The Covid-19 Pandemic-Induced Economic Recession, Maoyong Zheng, Cesar Escalante Jan 2024

Expansionary Federal Monetary Policy And U.S. Banks’ Risk Profiles During The Covid-19 Pandemic-Induced Economic Recession, Maoyong Zheng, Cesar Escalante

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

This study focuses on the pandemic phase when the U.S. economy dealt with significant economic recessionary pressures due to widespread, prolonged social mobility restraints. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) promptly pursued expansionary policies, such as lowering the federal funds rate to almost zero until February 2022. This study employs a Dynamic Panel Data Generalised Moment Method Model (DPD-GMM) to analyse the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic’s economic shocks and FOMC’s expansionary policy on U.S. banks’ loan portfolio and asset complement risk profiles. Our analysis extends from two pre-pandemic years through the pandemic recession and recovery periods (until early 2022) …

Optimal Empirical Strategy For Deriving The Spot Curve: The Case Of Poland, Piotr Bartkiewicz Jan 2024

Optimal Empirical Strategy For Deriving The Spot Curve: The Case Of Poland, Piotr Bartkiewicz

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

We use a proprietary dataset of daily quotations of individual bonds from the period 2005–2018 to assess the appropriateness of three common yield curve intrapolation methods: Nelson-Siegel (NS), Diebold-Li (DL) and cubic splines. Spot (zero-coupon) yield curves derived from the methods are used to price all securities in the sample in both in-sample and out-of-sample settings. The results highlight trade-offs inherent in any empirical strategy: between flexibility and in-sample fit, between overall fit and fit in particular segments of the curve. We look at both in-sample and out-of-sample. Cubic splines offer the best in-sample fit, but out-of-sample results indicate that …

The Impact Of Expansionary Monetary And Fiscal Policy On Firm Performance: A Comparative Analysis Of Pre, During, And Post-Covid Periods, Kofi O. Adansi Pipim Jan 2024

The Impact Of Expansionary Monetary And Fiscal Policy On Firm Performance: A Comparative Analysis Of Pre, During, And Post-Covid Periods, Kofi O. Adansi Pipim

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

In this research, we use panel data regression analysis to investigate the impact of expansionary monetary and fiscal policies on firm performance in pre (2017 to 2019), during (2020 to 2021), and post COVID-19 (2022 to 2023) periods. We combine quarterly data sourced from the Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS)-Compustat and the St Louis Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED) databases. After combining all data, our final sample consists of 3,226 publicly listed firms in the United States. We test the hypothesis that the economic and fiscal policy interventions instituted by the Federal Reserve (Fed) significantly affected firm performance during and …

Relative Impact Of Economic Policy Uncertainty And Mortgage Rates On The Supply Of New Homes For Sale In The United States, Jaclyn M. Devylder-Gaidish Jan 2024

Relative Impact Of Economic Policy Uncertainty And Mortgage Rates On The Supply Of New Homes For Sale In The United States, Jaclyn M. Devylder-Gaidish

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

This paper analyzes the changeable impact of economic policy uncertainty and mortgage rates on the supply of new homes for sale in the United States. The homes supply is proxied by the ratio of new homes for sale to new houses sold. The analysis utilizes monthly data from January 1985 to November 2023. The relationship is assessed using least square regression with second order autoregressive correction as well as Bai-Perron multiple breakpoint regression for structural breaks and Markov switching tests for state-dependency. The results demonstrate a significant direct correlation between economic policy uncertainty and housing supply, but only during the …

Economic Policy Uncertainty And Its Impact On Unemployment Rates Among U.S. Ethnic Groups, Melody Shirley Nimoh Jan 2024

Economic Policy Uncertainty And Its Impact On Unemployment Rates Among U.S. Ethnic Groups, Melody Shirley Nimoh

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

The study aims to investigate the transmission of Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) shocks on unemployment rates across different ethnic groups in the United States. The research employs econometric analysis such as regression modeling to determine the relationship between EPU and unemployment rates among African American, Hispanic or Latino American, and White American communities. The study estimates coefficient estimates for the lagged change in EPU and its impact on respective unemployment rates for each ethnic group. This shows that there are statistically significant positive relationships between EPU shocks and unemployment rates across all ethnic groups. An increase in EPU leads to …

Revisiting The Effect Of Bank Deregulation On Income Inequality, William B. Hankins, Anna-Leigh Stone, Gary Hoover Jan 2024

Revisiting The Effect Of Bank Deregulation On Income Inequality, William B. Hankins, Anna-Leigh Stone, Gary Hoover

Research, Publications & Creative Work

We use recently developed difference-in-differences methodologies and a panel of U.S. states over the period 1960 – 2015 to examine how bank branching deregulation impacted state-level income inequality. Existing research relying on traditional two-way fixed effects (TWFE) estimates and event studies provide mixed results. However, these results potentially suffer from biases due to treatment effect heterogeneity and the failure to account for multiple related treatments. Using bias-corrected difference-in-differences procedures and properly accounting for the timing of treatment, we find evidence that the combined effect of intrastate and interstate banking deregulation increased the income share of the top 10%, 5%, and …

Meme Corporate Governance, Dhruv Aggarwal, Albert H. Choi, Yoon-Ho Alex Lee Jan 2024

Meme Corporate Governance, Dhruv Aggarwal, Albert H. Choi, Yoon-Ho Alex Lee

Articles

Can retail investors revolutionize corporate governance and make public companies more responsive to social concerns? Beginning in 2021, there was a dramatic influx of retail investors into the shareholder base of “meme” stock companies such as GameStop, AMC, and Bed Bath & Beyond. Observing the unprecedented, coordinated trading among retail investors, scholars and practitioners predicted that the influx of retail investors would reduce the power of large institutional investors and democratize corporate governance. These predictions were driven by three factors: generational, with assumptions that millennial and Gen Z investors would challenge corporate management; societal, reflecting growing discontent with slow progress …

Taxation And Corporate Governance, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Ariel Siman Jan 2024

Taxation And Corporate Governance, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Ariel Siman

Articles

Legal and economic scholars have examined the intersection between corporate governance and taxation; however, recent legal scholarship has generally focused on the interplay between director compensation, management measures in the face of the market for corporate control, and the double taxation of inter-corporate dividends. Other aspects of the relationship between corporate governance and taxation have received limited attention. This article aims to fill this gap in the literature. First, this paper discusses the corporate agency problem and the existing justifications for the corporate tax. Second, this paper argues that the corporate tax can be justified on the ground that it …

The Rise Of Private Equity Continuation Funds, Kobi Kastiel, Yaron Nili Jan 2024

The Rise Of Private Equity Continuation Funds, Kobi Kastiel, Yaron Nili

Faculty Scholarship

This Article provides the first comprehensive examination of an emerging practice within the private equity sector: continuation funds. Continuation funds break from the traditional private equity model by allowing sponsors to hold on to assets beyond the typical fund term and, instead of selling the assets to third parties, sell them to their own newly established fund. Lauded by the private equity industry as providing “optionality” to investors by allowing them to cash out or roll over, continuation funds have grown to represent a major segment of investment activity in the United States. Despite their surging popularity among private equity …

Borrower Discouragement And Gender-Based Discrimination In The Credit Market: Firm-Level Evidence From Southeast Asian Countries, Safi Ullah Khanl, Nurshamimi Binti Abdul Samat Jan 2024

Borrower Discouragement And Gender-Based Discrimination In The Credit Market: Firm-Level Evidence From Southeast Asian Countries, Safi Ullah Khanl, Nurshamimi Binti Abdul Samat

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is an important theme in the finance literature, as well as an important policy concern given that SMEs are considered the backbone of an economy, job creation, and economic growth. Bank discouragement be-havior, where an entrepreneur or a firm manager is discouraged from applying for bank credit out of fear of loan application rejection, constitutes an important segment of small business financing and has long-term consequences for SMEs survival, profitability, and growth. Em-pirical studies on bank discouragement behavior have mainly been conducted in developed markets, with little empirical evidence on the …

The Inflation Reduction Act’S Role In Shaping Pharmaceutical Investment Strategies, Grace Harbour

Honors Theses and Capstones

The impact of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 on the financial strategies of pharmaceutical companies is the focus of this study, emphasizing research and development and capital expenditures. The act introduces a significant change in U.S. healthcare policy by enabling Medicare to directly negotiate the prices of select drugs. Employing a difference-in-differences analysis framework, this study analyzes data from both treated and control firms from Q1 2020 to Q4 2023 to evaluate the immediate financial responses of pharmaceutical companies to this significant legislative change.
