Venture Capital Due Diligence: Issues & Processes, Nick Jordan

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This paper discusses the areas and methods by which venture capitalists need to concentrate their efforts when assessing the attractiveness of an investment. The information is additionally valuable for entrepreneurs seeking funding to expand their businesses and academics researching the topic. A series of books, trade journals, articles and interviews were referenced in an effort to present a thorough and unbiased investigation of the topic. The research is significant given that private equity has remained an understudied area in comparison to larger public equity markets. Additionally, the traditionally shorter periods of operating history of private companies add a layer of …

Improving The Efficiency Of The Angel Finance Market: A Proposal To Expand The Intermediary Role Of Finders In The Private Capital Raising Setting, John L. Orcutt

Law Faculty Scholarship

The angel finance market is of critical importance to the financing and creation of rapid-growth start-ups, whose continuous creation plays a substantial role in the success of the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, the angel finance market suffers from systematic problems, including information and agency problems and high transaction costs, that limit its ability to adequately finance these rapid-growth start-ups. One reason for the angel market's inefficiency is the lack of meaningful financial intermediaries that operate in the market. One logical group that could serve a meaningful intermediary role in the angel market is finders. The current regulatory treatment of finders, however, …

Obesity, Educational Attainment, And State Economic Welfare, Martin W. Sivula Ph.D.

MBA Faculty Conference Papers & Journal Articles

For the first time in history, estimates of the overweight people in the world rival estimates of those malnourished. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2002) ranked obesity among the top 10 risks to human health worldwide. In the early 1960s, nearly half of the Americans were overweight and 13% were obese. Today some 64% of U.S. adults are overweight and 30.5% are obese. Even more alarming, twice as many U.S. children are overweight than were twenty years ago, a 66% increase. Non-communicable diseases impose a heavy economic burden on already strained health systems. Health is a key determinant of development …

The Performance Implications Of Ownership Driven Governance Reform, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan Dec 2003

The Performance Implications Of Ownership Driven Governance Reform, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper explores the performance impact of recent changes in foreign shareholdings and boardroom reforms in Japan. Empirical research on the impact of reform on the Japanese corporate governance system could provide useful lessons for their European counterparts who are themselves facing similar pressures to reform. We found that although participation of outside directors in strategic decision-making was associated with positive stock returns, the increase in the ratio of outside directors, the separation of the board members and executive officers, and the reduction of board size were not related to firm performance.

Amar Bhide : A New Take On New Businesses In Conversation With N Balasubramanian, Rishikesha T Krishnan, Mathew Manimala, S Raghunath And Douglas Stoddart., Amar Bhide

IIMB Management Review

In the beginning there was the traditional rags-to-riches myth. The myth now prevalent in the business world is about the business school style startup – the well planned, well financed, well managed startup, where an experienced manager from Microsoft or Intel has a big idea, comes up with a plan, raises millions of dollars from a venture capital fund, recruits a top notch team, puts it all together using the kind of business management techniques taught at business schools, and in fairly short order turns it into a successful business. Amar Bhide, whose book, The Origin and Evolution of New …

Venture Capitalism : A Close-Up, Anand Sudarshan

IIMB Management Review

The subject of venture capital and venture capitalists has captured the imagination of the public at large over the last five years. VCs have been both deified and pilloried, and have probably deserved their share of bouquets and brickbats. Undoubtedly, this exposure was in large measured fuelled by the high tech boom, the Silicon Valley, and our own obsession with all things IT.

The usefulness of any research is dependent upon how well the group studied represents the group about which decisions are to be made or conclusions drawn. That is, it depends upon how well the sample reflects relevant characteristics of the population. When it is possible to study every member of that group there is no problem, for on these occasions we can easily calculate the exact attribute (parameter) of interest for our population.

For example, if we were interested in determining the average number of gallons of gasoline sold to customers at our service station yesterday, we …

Institutional And Other Constraints To Non-Oil Exports., R. O. Madaki Sep 2001

Institutional And Other Constraints To Non-Oil Exports., R. O. Madaki

Bullion

This paper examines the non-oil exports sector in Nigeria which had witnessed a lacklustre performance despite the several statements of government's interest in export-biased growth strategy and the establishment of several export facilitating institutions. The paper further observes that a major problem with Nigeria's non-oil export sector is that it is not predicated on the design and implementation of appropriate and coherent economic policies as there is no clear export promotion blue print in Nigeria. Consequently, the sector is facing a number of institutional and other domestic and external problems. The remaining part of the paper briefly highlight some of …
