Corporate Governance And Managerial Incompetence: Lessons From Kmart, D. Gordon Smith Apr 1996

Corporate Governance And Managerial Incompetence: Lessons From Kmart, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Scholarship

Modern corporate governance scholars often extol an activist role by institutional investors in directing corporate activity. Widely viewed as a solution to the collective action problems that inhibit such activism by individual investors, institutional investors are praised for adding value to corporations through their participation in the decision making process. The ouster of Joseph Antonini as Chief Executive Officer of Kmart Corporation in 1995 might be taken as a vindication of this view, because substantial evidence indicates that institutional investors played a crucial role in influencing Kmart's board of directors to remove him. In this Article, Professor Smith challenges this …

Sexual Harassment: The Effects Of Gender And Attitude On Perceptions And Consequences Of Sexual Harassment, Barbara Cupit

Graduate Theses

Ninety-one individuals (52 males) and (39 females) read 13 scenarios depicting various sexual harassment incidents. Participants were asked to determine the seriousness of the harassment in each scenario, choose the type of grievance procedure they would prefer, and then rate how likely they would recommend each consequence in regards.to the harassment. Participants were also asked to complete a Sexual Harassment Attitude Questionnaire that measured "tolerance" towards sexual harassment. Potential differences between male and female perceptions and attitudes were examined. Results yielded significant differences between males and females with men exhibiting significantly more tolerant attitudes than did women towards sexual harassment. …

The Marginal Cost Of Funds With Nonseparable Public Spending, Shaghil Ahmed, Dean D. Croushore Apr 1996

The Marginal Cost Of Funds With Nonseparable Public Spending, Shaghil Ahmed, Dean D. Croushore

Economics Faculty Publications

This article provides new calculations of the welfare effects of fiscal changes when the publicly provided good is nonseparable in utility and production so that it affects economic agents' marginal decisions. The authors' results show that these nonseparabilities significantly alter the marginal cost of funds (MCF) that previous studies have calculated. The authors also report estimates of the nonseparable marginal benefits (NSMB) associated with aggregate government purchases. The net marginal cost offunds (NMCF ), which is equal to MCF - NSMB, is in general positive over a wide range of parameter values that encompass empirically relevant specifications. Thus the nonseparable …

Corporate Social Responsibility: A Cross Sectional Examination Of Incentivization, Jennifer A. Block Sep 1995

Corporate Social Responsibility: A Cross Sectional Examination Of Incentivization, Jennifer A. Block

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined corporate social responsibility and the most effective ways to incentivize environmentally proactive behavior among federal production contractors. The goal was to isolate factors which have the greatest potential for encouraging corporate environmental responsibility and to use the knowledge gained to construct incentives which can be incorporated into federal contracts. Relying on the concepts developed in organizational theory, four theories were presented to provide support that organizational behavior can be influenced. Previous incentive techniques used by the government were also investigated. From the initial research, a model was developed to describe the relationship between incentives and environmental responsibility. …

The New Ethic For Animals And The Dairy Industry, Bernard Rollin Apr 1995

The New Ethic For Animals And The Dairy Industry, Bernard Rollin

Morality and Ethics of Industrial Farming Collection

There is an unfortunate tendency on the part of those who use animals to dismiss the new social concern with animal treatment as the irrational ravings of tofu-eating, ginseng-guzzling, urban wimps and bunny-hugging extremists.“Animal welfare is what we already do; animal rights if what they want us to do,” one animal scientist said, neatly summarizing the situation. However, what is of paramount importance is that “they” are not just a band of radicals; the new ethic for animals has taken root among society in general. As one cowboy in Kingsville, Texas put it to me:“Hell, Doc, if it were just …

The Evolution Of First Amendment Protection For Commercial Speech, Karl Boedecker, Fred W. Morgan, Linda Berns Wright Jan 1995

The Evolution Of First Amendment Protection For Commercial Speech, Karl Boedecker, Fred W. Morgan, Linda Berns Wright

Economics, Law, and International Business

During the past 15 years, the U. S. Supreme Court has used Central Hudson Gas v. Public Service Commission (1980) to expand significantly the power of the government at all levels to regulate advertising and other promotional activities. As a result, first amendment protection for commercial speech has steadily diminished. In this article, Supreme Court decisions subsequent to Central Hudson are reviewed to provide an update of Cohen's (1978) work. In addition, the current standard for identifying commercial speech is analyzed, and managerial recommendations are made to guide managers who are responsible for making promotional decisions in this increasingly restricted …

Decision Framing And Efficiency/Effectiveness Trade-Offs In Auditors' Planning Materiality Judgments, Sridhar Ramamoorti Jan 1995

Decision Framing And Efficiency/Effectiveness Trade-Offs In Auditors' Planning Materiality Judgments, Sridhar Ramamoorti

Accounting Faculty Publications

The exercise of judgment is not only essential to the practice of disciplines such as law, medicine and accounting, but is also what distinguishes these domains as professions (Boritz, Gaber & Lemon, 1987, cited in Gibbins & Mason, 1988). Recent advances in cognitive psychology research have given an impetus to research focusing on the nature of professional judgment, expert-novice cognition, heuristics and biases in decision making as well as decision strategies, the acquisition of knowledge and the effects of experience, and the development of expert/decision support systems (Ashton, 1982a; Smith & Kida, 1991; Chi, Glaser & Farr, 1988). The central …

Report Earnings Accurately, Kenneth Yale Rosenzweig, Marilyn Fischer

Accounting Faculty Publications

As authors of the March article, “Is Managing Earnings Ethically Acceptable?,” we wish to thank Alfred M. King for his letter in the April issue questioning some of the contentions in our article. In a time when corruption seems to be rampant in many aspects of our national life, it is important for accountants to discuss openly what are their ethical responsibilities, and what are the limits to those responsibilities. The credibility of accounting numbers is vital to our success as a profession and as individual accountants. There will be no demand for accounting service if accounting information is not …

Business As Usual: Ethics As Mundane Behavior, And The Case Of Target Corporation, Jon A. Hess May 1994

Business As Usual: Ethics As Mundane Behavior, And The Case Of Target Corporation, Jon A. Hess

Communication Faculty Publications

Ethics are in vogue in the 1990s America. Concerns for ethical behavior pervade almost every aspect of our lives and work. This trend has not been unnoticed by the American business community. In fact, many businesses have taken current ethical concerns and tried to put them into action. In some cases, the action has been out of necessity or self-interest, as in the case of companies hurt by an unethical reputation or companies forced to implement ethics programs because of legal indictments. But some companies are taking a proactive stance toward ethics without external pressure.

As these businesses strive to …
