Business Ethics Education: How Well Are We Preparing Students To Handle Ethical Issues At Work?, Hector Lopez Apr 2010

Business Ethics Education: How Well Are We Preparing Students To Handle Ethical Issues At Work?, Hector Lopez

Touchstone

Educators at large constantly struggle to overcome curriculum and resources constraints to prepare students for everything within their specific academic program. The logical question to ask is whether the content of an ethics course aligns with the content of the ethical challenges students will face. While a strong case can be made supporting the mastery of classical approaches to ethical analysis, the touchstone for deciding what to include in a business ethics course or curriculum should reflect practicality and applicability as well as critical thinking. To build student awareness of ethics in real-time situations, both a conceptual foundation and ample …

Pedagogical Strategies For Teaching Moral Minimalism, Richard Mcgowan Jan 2010

Pedagogical Strategies For Teaching Moral Minimalism, Richard Mcgowan

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

In 1986, Stephen Satris’s article, "Student Relativism," means to "offer analysis of, and suggest some methods for dealing with, a quite particular and peculiar problem in teaching philosophy…I speak of the problem of student relativism." (Satris, 1986, p. 193) The problem has not gone away.

However, psychological research suggests that the problem of relativism, a problem especially critical for teaching business ethics (or any other class in applied philosophy) is not insolvable. This paper, extending earlier work by R. McGowan, provides a brief account of research by Lawrence Kohlberg and William Perry on the structure of thought exhibited by students, …

After Ten Years: Tracing The 1997 Vatican Statements Regarding Ethics In Advertising In Today's Advertising Textbooks, Anca C. Micu

Presidential Seminar on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition

One responsibility of all educators, especially those in marketing and advertising, is to provide students with a proper perspective regarding professional ethics. In other words, it is to guide future managers in developing an ethical conscience as they perfect their decision-making competence. Today, the 1997 Pontifical Council’s statements on ethics in advertising are the top result of a Google search for “ethics and advertising.” The amount of scriptural reference contained in the statements is considerably less than that found in most Papal social encyclicals (i.e., social writings of the Catholic Church). This approach made the document more accessible to thoughtful …

Professional Integrity In Higher Education: Behind The Green Curtain In The Land Of Oz, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews Apr 2006

Professional Integrity In Higher Education: Behind The Green Curtain In The Land Of Oz, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

This article discusses concerns related to professional integrity in academics and to the use of collegiality as an informal criterion for employment and evaluation decisions. We question the nature of the educational enterprise and the academic environment within which both students and faculty operate. We use the AAUP Statement on Professional Ethics to guide our examination of collegiality, and the three traditional areas of faculty evaluation (teaching, scholarship, and service), as they relate to professional integrity. We discuss potential pitfalls in situations involving integrity concerns, and suggest that the use of collegiality in professional decisions is more prevalent and potentially …

The Psychological Foundation For An Integrated Course In Law And Ethics, Richard Mcgowan Jan 2005

The Psychological Foundation For An Integrated Course In Law And Ethics, Richard Mcgowan

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Centuries ago, Thomas Aquinas noted that “human reason must proceed from the precepts of the natural law as from certain common and indispensable principles to other more particular dispositions” (ST I-II, 91, 3) He said that “because of the uncertainty of human judgment, especially in contingent and particular matters, it happens that different decisions are made about different human acts so that laws are often divergent and even contradictory.” (91, 4) To the casual reader, Thomas might be endorsing a position akin to ethical relativism but Thomas finds little to endorse about that position: “the truth is the same for …

Whither Business Ethics Teaching In India?, R C Sekhar

IIMB Management Review

In his effort to analyse the state of business ethics teaching in India, R C Sekhar, Professor Emeritus, T A Pai Management Institute and author of Ethical Choices in Businesses, begins by identifying the six different segments of stakeholders involved and their differing expectations. While conceding that it is a ‘desirable but daunting task’ to establish congruence of interest between teachers, students, Indian employers, global employers, Indian society and global society, he takes the pragmatic first step of devising a strategy of teaching ethics, which would consider the interests of teachers and students. From the salient trends in Indian teaching and …

Teaching Ethics : The Underpinnings, Fr K Cyriac

IIMB Management Review

Fr Cyriac, Professor of Organisational Behaviour, IIM Kozhikode, begins by questioning whether management education as it is imparted today, is sending confusing signals to well-intentioned students. Managers certainly need an ethical framework in order to function effectively and the crucial issue in business ethics revolves around the anchor base of values. While experts in the field often take pleasure in comparing different theories and approaches, what is needed in management education and practice is an honest attempt to balance means and ends, processes and products, consumption and preservation, competition and cooperation, IQ and EQ, self and society. In this framework …

Teaching Ethics Effectively, B A Prajapati Dec 2002

Teaching Ethics Effectively, B A Prajapati

IIMB Management Review

Stating his proposition pithily, B A Prajapati, Professor and Head, S K School of Business Management, North Gujarat University, enumerates the three basic areas of managerial decision-making: choices about the law, choices about economic and social issues beyond the domain of the law – the ‘people values’, and choices between self-interest and the interests of the company/its stakeholders. Business ethics is the study of how moral norms apply to these activities and goals of commercial enterprise and how the business context poses its own unique problems for the moral person who acts as an agent of this system. Exercising power …
