This research explores the weekly crude oil price data from U.S. Energy Information Administration over the time period 2009 - 2017 to test the forecasting accuracy by comparing time series models such as simple exponential smoothing (SES), moving average (MA), and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) against machine learning support vector regression (SVR) models. Machine Learning The Harness Track: A Temporal Investigation Of Race History On Prediction, Robert P. Schumaker

Machine learning techniques have shown their usefulness in accurately predicting greyhound races. Many of the studies within this domain focus on two things; win-only wagers and using a very particular combination of race history. Our study investigates altering these properties and studying the results. In particular we found a race history combination that optimizes our S&C Racing system’s predictions on seven different wager types. From this, S&C Racing posted an impressive 50.44% accuracy in selecting winning wagers with a payout of $609.34 and a betting return of $10.06 per dollar wagered.

This pedagogical paper describes how a graduate course in Text Mining was developed and taught in a fully online format at Quinnipiac University. The software used was SAS™ Enterprise Miner. This paper discusses the design, software used and the methodology followed in the course. A critical component of the course required the students to delve deep into social media data by completing a detailed project on analyzing sentiment analysis using large files of social media data. A sample report of this project, which was a key deliverable for the course, is described at length in this paper.

What effect does a financial news article have on stock price? To answer this question we investigate stock price movements within the minutes following financial news releases, broken down by media outlet, time of release and article sentiment. Our data shown a Sharpe ratio (a measure for calculating risk-adjusted return) of 1.18 versus a random dataset of ‑0.06, indicating significant price movement immediately following article release. Second, we found that articles released through WSJ, Reuters – UK Focus, NYT and FT all experienced significant positive returns, whereas articles in Barrons, MarketWatch, Forbes and Bloomberg experienced significant negative returns. A deterministic optimization model generates recommendations for optimal purchases of products in a given planning period. In this paper, we present an analysis of features influencing Yelp's proprietary review filtering algorithm. Classifying or misclassifying reviews as recommended or non-recommended affects average ratings, consumer decisions, and ultimately, business revenue. Our analysis involves systematically sampling and scraping Yelp restaurant reviews. Features are extracted from review metadata and engineered from metrics and scores generated using text classifiers and sentiment analysis. The coefficients of a multivariate logistic regression model were interpreted as quantifications of the relative importance of features in classifying reviews as recommended or non-recommended. We examine the corporate governance roles of information quality and the takeover market with asymmetric information regarding the value of the target firm. Increasing information quality improves the takeover efficiency however, a highly efficient takeover market also discourages the manager from exerting effort. We find that perfect information quality is not optimal for either current shareholders’ expected payoff maximization or expected firm value maximization. Furthermore, current shareholders prefer a lower level of information quality than the level that maximizes expected firm value, because of a misalignment between current shareholders’ value and total firm value. The usual Shewhart control chart efficiently detects large shifts in the mean of a quality characteristic and has been extensively studied in the literature. Most proposed alternatives to the Shewhart chart aim to improve either the signal performance for smaller mean shifts or reduce the sampling effort required to detect a larger shift. The study examines the relationship between cultural intelligence (CI) and the internationalization of Swiss Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). It also evaluates the role of internationalization motivators within that relationship. A self-administered survey was sent (by email) to the managers of 640 Swiss SMEs, identified from the Swiss SME database (Switzerland Global Enterprises-ge.com). The data analysis confirms that the internationalization process and the intention to internationalize depend to a large extent on the cultural intelligence of these managers. This thesis introduces blockchain, the underlying technology of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, and discusses how best to conceptualize it relative to other technologies. Following an explanation of the fundamentals of blockchain, also known as the distributed ledger, I identify the characteristics of the technology. Building upon blockchain’s inherent strengths and limitations, I explore potential business applications of blockchain. Finally, I recommend that leaders continue to track the development and adoption of blockchain technology, even if they decide that implementing it does not align with their organization’s strategy at present.

This study attempts to determine if college students with sensation seeking tendencies are more likely to have entrepreneurial tendencies due to the risk involved in both entrepreneurship and thrill seeking activates. This study used a combination of the Sensation Seeking Scale and the Attitudes Towards Enterprise test to determine the correlation between physical risk taken in hobbies and taking risk in business.
