The Current Royalty Distribution Process For Songwriters In The United States And Improving The Process, Catherine Canete May 2018

The Current Royalty Distribution Process For Songwriters In The United States And Improving The Process, Catherine Canete

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

In this paper, I explore the music publishing process as a whole and the possible income streams available for songwriters in the music industry. Though songwriters are not the only individuals that may receive royalties for their work, this paper focuses primarily on songwriters and music publishing. Using data collected from interviews and secondary research, I explain the steps involved from generating royalties to the payment to the songwriter. I explain the roles of copyright, performing rights organizations, music publishers, mechanical licensing agencies, and more. Though the system functions as is, I describe some of the issues with the processes …

Diversification Of Orchestras’ Audiences, Musicians, Programming, And Revenues: Transforming The Relevancy Of German And U.S Orchestras To Their Communities, Dina Marie Weineck May 2018

Diversification Of Orchestras’ Audiences, Musicians, Programming, And Revenues: Transforming The Relevancy Of German And U.S Orchestras To Their Communities, Dina Marie Weineck

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This thesis presents ways of how orchestras in Germany and the U.S can transform classical music into a vehicle for social improvement through the diversification of audiences, musicians’ body, artistic programming, concert experience, and revenues. The linkages between mission and funding models of U.S orchestras are being re-calibrated, striving for social relevancy and financial sustainability at once. This approach is contrary to the way in which orchestras have divorced their missions for on-site concerts as their primary product from off-site community programs as a secondary avenue. The purpose and mission set forth for these orchestras, respectively, must be viewed in …

T Bone Burnett, The American South, And The Ethic Of A Contemporary Cultural Renaissance, Heath J. Carpenter Sep 2016

T Bone Burnett, The American South, And The Ethic Of A Contemporary Cultural Renaissance, Heath J. Carpenter

Student Theses and Dissertations

With the success of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, T Bone Burnett spent his cultural capital on repurposing traditional American music in subsequently successful soundtracks and artistic productions, providing a spark for a 21st century cultural movement that moves beyond music. This study aims to position Burnett has a cultural catalyst by grounding his work, and those abiding by a similar ethic, in the American South. In the process, I examine what Burnett’s soundtracks and select artistic productions communicate about contemporary Southern cultures and identities, while negotiating the ever-enigmatic generational issues of identity and authenticity. By extending the …

I Am An Artist! What Do I Know About Business?, Angela Wright Jul 2016

I Am An Artist! What Do I Know About Business?, Angela Wright

Dept. of Organisation & Professional Development Publications

What has business to do with art? Should artists understand business? This research is concerned with the world of the artist who must operate in a business world. In the words of the late singer, Luciano Pavarotti (2003), artists must „be heard and be seen‟ to be successful. Commercial entities expose their products and services to clients to survive, and for the artist, this is no different. The paper examines if there is a need to ensure that our artistic graduates are „market ready‟, and specifically examines this concept in the context of an Irish Institute of Technology (IT). Artists …

Hey, He Stole My Copyright: Putting Theft On Trial In The Tenenbaum Copyright Case, Peter J. Karol Jan 2013

Hey, He Stole My Copyright: Putting Theft On Trial In The Tenenbaum Copyright Case, Peter J. Karol

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article approaches the well-publicized Joel Tenenbaum copyright case through an analysis of its highly-charged trial rhetoric. In particular, it argues that the case as tried was not really about Joel Tenenbaum or his actions. Rather, the trial was about whether, and to what extent, peer-to-peer (“P2P”) file sharing is “theft,” and the P2P sharer a “thief.” So approached, the case provides a captivating, perhaps unique, academic case study on the power of theft rhetoric in a copyright trial as advanced before a jury.

It first introduces the Tenenbaum litigation generally, and its place in the recording companies’ broad attack …

Pygmalion Music Festival As Alternative Media? A Critical Analysis Of The Intersection Of Independence And Corporatization, Patrick R. Singer Jan 2013

Pygmalion Music Festival As Alternative Media? A Critical Analysis Of The Intersection Of Independence And Corporatization, Patrick R. Singer

Masters Theses

This study of Pygmalion Music Festival utilizes a theoretical framework of alternative media theory to analyze the festival's position in independent and corporate music festival and concert production. Pygmalion Music Festival is a mid-sized independently owned and operated music festival held annually in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. This research investigates the progression of independent ( or "indie") music culture, how the industry has gradually become co-opted by the corporate music industry, and how Pygmalion Music Festival is situated within the indie/corporate binary. This binary is not black and white, rather an intersection that creates a blurred area between the two. "Indie" artists …

Diy Pr: How Independent Music Artists Use Online Social Networks For Public Relations Purposes, Martina Lawless Jan 2012

Diy Pr: How Independent Music Artists Use Online Social Networks For Public Relations Purposes, Martina Lawless

Theses

Significance of the study: Independent musicians are a huge part of the Irish music industry and yet they are the part that do not have the backing of a record label. This means independent musicians need to look at cheap or even free ways to promote themselves to existing fans and potential new fans. With the emergence of social networks musicians both signed and independent have the tools necessary to engage in a new form DIY PR. The purpose of this study is to look at the different ways that social networks have helped musicians in recent years, but also …

An Information-Gathering Approach To Copyright Policy, Peter Dicola, Matthew Sag Jan 2012

An Information-Gathering Approach To Copyright Policy, Peter Dicola, Matthew Sag

Faculty Articles

For over a century and with increasing frequency, major controversies have erupted between large distributors of copyrighted works (song publishers, movie studios, record labels, book publishers, etc.) and makers of new technologies for experiencing those works (player piano manufacturers, VCR manufacturers, the creators of file sharing software, Google Books, etc.). Usually, the copyright owners and the technology firms reach a licensing deal-but not without some form of government intervention. Various institutions within the federal government have become involved in these disputes, using a variety of different mechanisms. This Article is a theoretical investigation of government intervention in these content-technology copyright …

On Kathleen E. R. Smith's God Bless America: Tin Pan Alley Goes To War, Matthew Hein Oct 2003

On Kathleen E. R. Smith's God Bless America: Tin Pan Alley Goes To War, Matthew Hein

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

When America's Top 40 starts counting down, are those best-sellers of popular music the results of clever top-down marketing ploys and mass-psyche machinations, or do those lists reflect vox populi, making itself heard with its purchasing dollars above the din of preplanned propaganda? Kathleen E.R. Smith doesn't seem to care. Perhaps it isn't her place to consider such possibly unsolvable questions. Smith's place, apparently, is to research the records in disarray that detail an interesting phenomenon: that of the top-down attempt to create and popularize a great American fight song (assuming the role Over There filled during WWI) …
