Data Analytics And Compliance With Aacsb Accounting Technology Standards: A Critically Appraised Topic, Gregory J. Tanzola
Engaged Management ReView
As technology accelerates and gains importance in the accounting industry, the inclusion of technology in accounting curricula also becomes more important. Indeed, this inclusion is a requirement of the academic accounting accrediting body, The American Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). However, neither minimal guidance nor standards for meeting the technology requirements currently exist. This topic paper examines how academic accounting departments may address data analytics as a component of the AACSB’s technology requirement. The analysis synthesizes peer-reviewed articles exploring how data analytics are being integrated into accounting curricula and identifies three main concerns: (1) the need for …

This paper investigates whether the use of Big Data analytics by firms has a spillover effect on management forecasting behavior. Insights provided by Big Data could potentially improve firms’ ability to forecast earnings (supply channel) and investor demand for earnings information is likely higher for firms engaging in data analytics (demand channel). Using a text-based measure of firms’ commitments to and usage of Big Data analytics, we find that Big Data analytics usage is positively associated with the propensity to issue management earnings forecasts. Consistent with the “supply channel” explanation, we find that Big Data analytics usage is positively associated …

Despite the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) growing emphasis on data analytics in recent years, there is scant research about whether the investment in data analytics accomplishes its objective of enhancing enforcement efficiency. This study examines the effects of the SEC regional offices’ use of data analytics on their investigation outcomes. The utilization of data analytics reduces information processing costs, thereby streamlining the enforcement process as a whole. I find that the SEC’s use of data analytics is associated with a 12% increase in the SEC’s investigation success rate. Such an improvement is greater for firms whose disclosure are more …

Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We examine the impact of data analytics on audit quality. Using hand-collected information on data analytics skills of employees of audit firms, we find that human capital investment in data analytics improves audit quality. The analytics capability of both frontline and back-office employees contributes to audit quality. The effect is more pronounced for audit clients with complex business operations, for clients with complicated accounting estimates, and for clients that are more digitalized. Taken together, our findings suggest that an audit office’s analytics capability represents an important office attribute that can affect audit quality.

In this article, we introduce an Excel exercise on simulation that can be implemented in a management accounting class. Specifically, we introduce a three phase implementation process where instructors (i) give the class an introduction to simulation, (ii) introduce students to a four-step process used in conducting analysis using simulation in Excel, and (iii) introduce a simulation problem focused on a specific area of management accounting (revenue projection) and guide students in completing the simulation analysis in Excel. By highlighting how simulation models can be built using Excel and used to solve a management accounting problem, our article identifies an …

Although past research finds that auditors support data analytics and artificial intelligence to enhance audit quality in their daily work, in reality, only a small number of audit firms, who innovated and invested in the two sophisticated technologies, utilize it in their auditing process. This paper analyzes three factors, including three individual theories, that may influence the adoption of data analytics and artificial intelligence in auditing: regulation (Institutional theory: explaining the catch-22 between the auditors and policymakers), knowledge barrier (Technology acceptance model's theory: explore the concept of ease of use), and people (algorithm aversion: a phenomenon that auditors believe in …

Constituent demands for improved transparency in governmental reporting have increased since the 2008 financial crisis in the U.S. that impacted the financial well-being of many individuals and entities, including state and local municipalities. Since then, several governmental entities have provided an open data environment. However, these early initiatives do not incorporate robust analytic capabilities that are able to satisfy numerous and varied constituent inquiries. This research proposes development of the ENHanced ANalytic Constituent Environment (ENHANCE) framework in response to the analytic nature of the inquiries from various governmental stakeholders such as citizens, analysts, bond investors, creditors, vendors, auditors, and oversight …
