Employee Retention Strategies Within Information Technology Small Businesses, Felicia Tetee Washington

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe retention of high talent employees is vital to the success of any organization. Organization leaders who lack effective strategies to retain high talent employees are at risk for business performance failure. A lack of managerial strategies to motivate employees and a lack of understanding of employees' needs lead to increased employee turnover rate in organizations. Grounded in Herzberg's two-factor theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies information technology (IT) small business leaders use to retain high talent employees. Data were collected from phone semistructured interviews and review of the organizations' employee handbook, policies, …

Taxing Cannabis On The Reservation, Mark J. Cowan Jan 2020

Taxing Cannabis On The Reservation, Mark J. Cowan

Accountancy Faculty Publications and Presentations

American Indian tribes that enter the cannabis industry confront a multisovereign tax system that lacks certainty and horizontal equity. The complex interaction of state legalization and taxation of cannabis, federal tax law, the status of tribes as both governments and business enterprises, and the legal and tax landscape in Indian country can give tribes tax advantages and disadvantages compared to off-reservation cannabis dispensaries. This article analyzes these tax issues, examines them in the context of prior challenges posed by Indian gaming, and suggests reforms that address the tax inequities that can result from cannabis sales on Indian reservations.

Proprietary Costs Of Financial Reporting, Country-Level Attributes, And Financial Statement Comparability, Jangho Gil Jan 2020

Proprietary Costs Of Financial Reporting, Country-Level Attributes, And Financial Statement Comparability, Jangho Gil

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study investigates the impact of country-level attributes on the relationship between proprietary costs of financial reporting and financial statement comparability. Given that managers use discretion in financial reporting, proprietary costs of financial reporting and country-level attributes could play a role in shaping managers' financial reporting behavior, which, in turn, could have an impact on financial statement comparability. For international study, I use four country-level latent factors, suggested by Isidro et al. (2019), that categorize most country-level features that affect financial reporting practices. I find that the negative relationship between proprietary costs and comparability is stronger in countries with relatively …

Technology Based Audit Tools: Implications For Audit Quality, Annie L. Witte Jan 2020

Technology Based Audit Tools: Implications For Audit Quality, Annie L. Witte

2020

Technology as an exogenous shock has proven to have pervasive effects on auditing firms, practitioners, regulators, and global markets. However, the dynamic nature of technology makes it uniquely challenging to articulate technology’s largescale implications on the auditing profession in recent times. Understanding how current technology has helped shape the contemporary auditing profession is vital to identify points of inflection within the industry (i.e., areas of risk and change), and key to elucidating the future of where the field is going.

The first paper (sole-authored) is a literature review that synthesizes auditing studies across methodologies, including archival, experimental, and qualitative methods. …

Determinants Of Tax Morale Using Structural Equation Model (Sem), Raymond S. Pacaldo, Rodiel C. Ferrer Jan 2020

Determinants Of Tax Morale Using Structural Equation Model (Sem), Raymond S. Pacaldo, Rodiel C. Ferrer

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This paper analyzes the impact of tax enforcement, trust in government, and demographic characteristics on the tax morale of firms in the Philippines. From the database of Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS), 864 firms were taken and analyzed using partial least squares on the structural equation of modeling (PLS-SEM). In the analysis, only trust in government, organizational form, and firm location provided a significant impact to tax morale. Thus, firms pay taxes religiously when the government acts trustworthily. On the other hand, sole proprietorship and Metro Manila firms exhibited lower tax morale as compared to corporations and outside …

Effect Of Moderating Variables: Financial Leverage And Dividend Payout Of Publicly-Listed Property Sector Of The Philippines, Cynthia P. Cudia, Harrison Kendrick L. Chun, Tristan Dranel M. Papa, Raveena S. Tahilramani, Althea R. Tan

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Various studies on the relationship between financial leverage and dividend payout have been conducted; however, different factors affecting this relationship remain unexplored. This study aimed to identify the effect of different firm-specific moderating variables on the relationship between financial leverage and dividend payout of Philippine publicly-listed companies under the property sector for the years 2012–2016. These firm-specific variables were classified into two categories—company profile and financial condition. By employing multiple regression with the interaction model, the results of this study found that business risk has a significant effect on the relationship between financial leverage and dividend payout. Similarly, firm size …

It is imperative for the insurance companies to be profitable while obliging the society and nation as a risk saver of insurable risk. The research aims to investigate the association between specific internals and macroeconomic factors and the financial performance of insurance companies in Ethiopia. A quantitative approach is applied in this research by adopting inferential statistics with a balanced panel data of nine insurance companies for 15 years (2002–2016). Explanatory analysis is deployed where Pearson’s correlation and OLS regression model are applied to …

Fiscal Policy And Stock Market Movement In The Philippines, Deborah Kim S. Sy Jan 2020

Fiscal Policy And Stock Market Movement In The Philippines, Deborah Kim S. Sy

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The Philippine government has suffered greatly from fiscal imbalances for the past few decades. The largest fiscal deficit was recorded at PhP112 billion in 2017. Fiscal reforms led to a considerable decline of the national government debt from 52.4% of GDP in 2010 to 44.8% in 2015. The study aims to investigate the Philippine fiscal policy and its link to asset prices, as measured by the changes in the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEI). Quarterly observations from 2001 to 2017 of monetary, fiscal, and economic variables were used on a vector error correction model (VECM) to observe their long-run relationship …

Corporate Social Responsibility And Corporate Financial Performance: An Examination Into Fortune 500 And Djsi Firms Within Consumer-Facing Industries, Samantha Lee

CMC Senior Theses

This paper examines the relationship between a firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its Corporate Financial Performance (CFP) in nine consumer-facing industries classified by the Fortune 500. Unlike prior research on the matter, the firms investigated in this study consist only of firms on both the Fortune 500 for the year 2018 and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) between the years 2005-2018 in order to define a clear measurement of CSR. In order to gauge investor and market sentiment, CFP is measured primarily by the firm’s stock performance in comparison to the S&P 500 as a basis. The results …

Internal Business Control Systems In Small Puerto Rican Retail Businesses, Belma A. Borras Jan 2020

Internal Business Control Systems In Small Puerto Rican Retail Businesses, Belma A. Borras

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Small businesses' vulnerability to financial losses brought about by employee theft is higher than for larger organizations. Small business owners are concerned about occupational fraud, as the annual average loss from fraud for small business owners in the United States was $150,000 per incident. Grounded in the fraud triangle theory and COSO Internal Control Integrated Framework, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between the degree of segregation of duties, attitude toward internal controls, and the internal control system in small gas and convenience stores in Puerto Rico. Data were collected from 129 small business …

Corporate Governance, Measurement Of, Maeve O'Connell, Anne Marie Ward Jan 2020

Corporate Governance, Measurement Of, Maeve O'Connell, Anne Marie Ward

Articles

The increased focus on good governance and the development of best practice guidelines, often supported by legislation, has been in response to corporate scandals, such as Enron and Worldcom in the early 2000s, and the 2008 banking crisis. Good governance is increasingly recognised as a process where the ‘best practices' of yesterday become the standard practices of today. This increased focus has also coincided with a worldwide movement for corporate reporting on sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues and a growing demand within the investment industry for investment products that are socially responsible (Benn and Dunphy 2013). Sustainable development …

Analytical Framework And Student Perceptions: Assessing The Quality Of Doctoral Education In Accounting In Ireland, Anne Marie Ward, Louise Gorman, Niamh M. Brennan

Articles

To examine the quality of doctoral education in accounting in higher education institutions (HEIs) in Ireland, we develop an analytical framework from the relevant literature and the principles of quality doctoral education included in the Higher Education Authority’s (HEA) National Framework for Doctoral Education (NFDE). Our analytical framework identifies 16 measurable indicators of quality doctoral education classified into four dimensions: context, inputs, processes and outcomes. Compliance with the quality indicators is verified by coding HEI websites and prospectuses. Deeper insights on the indicators of quality doctoral education are obtained from semi-structured interviews with accounting doctoral students. Our findings shed valuable …

Stakeholder Engagement And The Future Of Irish Public–Private Partnerships, Gail Sheppard, Matthias Beck Jan 2020

Stakeholder Engagement And The Future Of Irish Public–Private Partnerships, Gail Sheppard, Matthias Beck

Articles

Building on recent works that stress the importance of stakeholder engagement in partnerships, we propose a novel benchmarking framework for the evaluation of public–private partnerships. This framework describes mutuality and the preservation of organisational identity as the ideal characteristics of partnerships because they, in turn, encourage stakeholder support for public–private partnerships. Applying this framework to infrastructure public–private partnerships in Ireland, we note that mutual accountability has been weakened following the financial crisis. Meanwhile, con-sultation with clients such as key public–private partnership stakeholders, which would help articulate organisational identities, remains patchy across the education, justice
and health public–private partnership that we …

A key element of this analysis will be the breadth of assets considered. These include Crude and Refined Oil products, Natural Gas, and wholesale Electricity markets. We find significant differences in the …

Managerial Entrenchment And Financial Reporting Comparability, Qifeng Wu Jan 2020

Managerial Entrenchment And Financial Reporting Comparability, Qifeng Wu

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study examines whether managerial entrenchment has an association with firms' financial statement comparability. I find that managerial entrenchment has a significant negative association with financial statement comparability, providing a new notion about the management influence on financial reporting quality. Moreover, by using the business segment as a proxy for business complexity, I find that the variation of accounting comparability with its peer firms mainly stems from managers' investment choice. This finding supports FASB's assertion that financial statement comparability is a reporting quality that should be enhanced among firms with similar economic events. Lastly, I test if managerial entrenchment mitigates …

Target Accounting Quality And Merger Consideration Design, Yuyun Zhou Jan 2020

Target Accounting Quality And Merger Consideration Design, Yuyun Zhou

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study examines how accounting quality of target firms relates to the design of merger consideration in acquisition agreements. Prior literature suggests that acquirers mitigate adverse selection problems by making the value of merger consideration sensitive to the acquirers' merger announcement returns. Using a large sample of acquisition agreements of public merging parties between 1996 and 2017, I investigate whether high-quality accounting information of target firms helps acquirers mitigate adverse selection problems and in turn affects the sensitivity of merger consideration to the acquirers' merger announcement returns. I hypothesize and find that accounting quality of target firms is negatively related …
