Notes On Accounting Capstone Course Design: Contemporary Issues Versus Case Analysis Enhances Student Interest And Learning, Clemense Ehoff Jr.

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

This paper presents how the Internet can be used to bring contemporary issues into the accounting capstone course to enhance student interest and learning. While existing cases have been reviewed and structured, they focus on issues that may not be at the forefront of the items currently under examination and/or debate by the accounting profession. Based on course development and delivery experience at a major Eastern University, the benefits and drawbacks of using the Internet to select contemporary accounting issues are presented and compared to existing research findings as a basis for future study. While the focus of this paper …

Continuous Controls Monitoring Can Help Defer Fraud, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Joseph Dupree Mar 2010

Continuous Controls Monitoring Can Help Defer Fraud, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Joseph Dupree

Accounting Faculty Publications

The biannual survey of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) found that US organizations lose an estimated 7 percent of annual revenues to fraud. Based on corresponding United States GDP figures from the World Bank, this percentage indicates a staggering estimate of losses — around $994 billion — among U.S. organizations, despite increased emphasis on anti-fraud controls and recent legislation to combat fraud. As the survey suggests, almost every large and small organization is potentially susceptible to fraud risk, both internally from employee theft and corruption and externally by vendors and other third parties engaged in fraud against the …

Cal Poly Organic Farm Business Plan, Eric Ryan Mccarthy

Agribusiness

This study was undertaken to determine which strategies would allow the Cal Poly Organic Farm to operate as a profitable business without compromising educational and agricultural objectives. Three strategies were analyzed to determine the most profitable approach. The first strategy, expanding CSA sales, emphasizes marketing efforts to increase products and services awareness. This should increase CSA, CPOF, merchandise, and farmers’ markets sales. The second strategy implements new CSA produce boxes that cater to specific groups. Existing produce boxes will remain available to CSA members. Expanding produce boxes can be done with the produce on hand or expanding crop selection. The …

The Pricing Of Conservative Accounting And The Measurement Of Conservatism At The Firm-Year Level, Dan Segal, Jeffrey L. Callen, Ole-Kristian Hope Mar 2010

The Pricing Of Conservative Accounting And The Measurement Of Conservatism At The Firm-Year Level, Dan Segal, Jeffrey L. Callen, Ole-Kristian Hope

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This paper analyzes the relation between equity prices and conditional conservatism and introduces a new measure of conservatism at the firm-year level. We show that the asymmetric properties of conservative accounting, the existence of non-accounting sources of information, and the properties of GAAP related to special items combine to generate a nonlinear relation between unexpected equity returns and earnings news (the shock to expected current and future earnings). Based on this model, we construct a conservatism ratio (CR) defined as the ratio of the current earnings shock to earnings news. CR measures the proportion of the total shock to expected …

The Influence Of Foreign Operations And Their Disclosure On Earnings Quality, Sixian Yang, Fang Hu, Don E. Giacomino Mar 2010

The Influence Of Foreign Operations And Their Disclosure On Earnings Quality, Sixian Yang, Fang Hu, Don E. Giacomino

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

This paper investigates the influence of foreign operations and their financial disclosure on earnings quality in terms of accounting conservatism (timely recognizing losses). In a large (7,311 corporate years) sample of U.S. corporations, we find earnings of firms with multinational operations (MNCs) tend to be of lower quality and are reported less conservatively than those without foreign operations (domestic firms). Further, by looking at the geographic segment information disclosed by MNCs, we find that earnings conservatism gets improved if a MNC reports “clean” segment information of foreign operations; wherein operating results of MNC are broken down by geographic regions (continent …

Corporate Governance, Investor Protection, And Auditor Choice In Emerging Markets, Mahmud Hossain, Chee Yeow Lim, Patricia Mui Siang Tan Mar 2010

Corporate Governance, Investor Protection, And Auditor Choice In Emerging Markets, Mahmud Hossain, Chee Yeow Lim, Patricia Mui Siang Tan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In this study, we examine the effect of firm-level governance on the firm's choice of an external auditor. Further, we test how the relation between corporate governance and auditor choice may be affected by the strength of legal environment. The results show that firm-level governance scores are positively related to the firm's auditor choice. This association is strengthened by country-level legal protection. Specifically, the positive association between auditor choice and the firm-level governance scores is weaker (stronger) in a low (high) legal environment. These findings are robust after controlling for determinants that were found to be significant in earlier research. …

The Impact Of Corporate Social Disclosure On Investment Behavior: A Cross-National Study, Joyce Van Der Van Der Laan Smith, Ajay Adhikari, Rasoul H. Tondkar, Robert L. Andrews

Accounting Faculty Publications

We examine the impact of corporate social disclosure (CSD) on investment behavior in the US, Japan, France, and Sweden using stakeholder theory as the underlying framework for our analysis. We find that there is a significant difference in investors’ reactions to CSD across countries. Using a unique stakeholder scale we also find that these reactions are related to the investors’ stakeholder orientation. These findings provide insight into cross-national dif- ferences in the perceived relevance of CSD to investors.

Audit Market Concentration And Audit Quality, Sanjay Kallapur, Srinivasan Sankaraguruswamy, Yoonseok Zang Feb 2010

Audit Market Concentration And Audit Quality, Sanjay Kallapur, Srinivasan Sankaraguruswamy, Yoonseok Zang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Policymakers and regulators have been concerned about the impact of audit market concentration resulting from decline in the number of audit firms due to mergers and the demise of Arthur Andersen. In this paper we find a positive association between audit market concentration (Herfindahl index) at the MSA level and audit quality (measured by discretionary accruals and the Dechow-Dichev (2002) measure of accrual quality). We control for fixed year effects, therefore our results are unlikely to be affected by the increase in concentration due to Andersen’s demise contemporaneous with an increase in audit quality because of regulatory measures such as …

User Information Risk: How It Improves Audit Quality, Jack R. Ethridge, Treba Marsh Jan 2010

User Information Risk: How It Improves Audit Quality, Jack R. Ethridge, Treba Marsh

Faculty Publications

Audited financial statements are the basis for the communication of essential financial information. Accordingly, the reliability of the financial statements is of extreme importance to all parties involved in the process. This paper identifies the three primary parties as the organization, the auditor, and the user and recommends the user play an increased role in this process. The user should be allowed to analyze the quality of the auditor and audit process based upon five critical factors that should be required to be disclosed by the auditor. This paper discusses the five factors and how each one could benefit the …

Survey Responses: Mail Versus Email Solicitations, Rodger G. Holland, Aileen Smith, James R. Hasselback, Bryson Payne

Surveys, particularly electronic surveys, are becoming popular methods of eliciting consumer responses. For example, many businesses now have survey sites printed on the bottom of receipts with some future discount as an enticement to participate. Clearly, the intent of such incentives is to stimulate participation. Surveys have also become popular in academia, but rarely are incentives offered. Clearly, those in academia also prefer a high participation rate, but without financial incentives what can be done to encourage participation? This research attempts to address that question.

Undergraduate Preparation And Dissertation Methodologies Of Accounting Phds Over The Past 40 Years, Marvin L. Bouillon, Sue Ravenscroft

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

There is a shortage of accounting faculty and this shortage is predicted to worsen in the future. The number of new PhDs in accounting has declined from approximately 200 per year in the late 1980' s and early 1990' s to just over I 00 per year in recent years. Currently, we expect approximately 400 to 500 new accounting faculty positions to open up annually over the next to five to ten years. We believe that there has been a narrowing of the number of PhD candidates coming from fields other than accounting and other business related fields. If this …

Credit Lyonnais In France (C. 1871-1918): Using Cash Flow Analysis To Assess Risk In Banking;, Nicolas Praquin

Accounting Historians Journal

In the absence of accounting rules, financial reports and disclosures were of little use to shareholders and stakeholders before World War I. To offset the unreliability of financial information, several banks, including the Credit Lyonnais, implemented a system of accounting analysis that, in essence, anticipated modern financial-analysis tools based on funds statements and cash-flow statements. This paper, based on the Credit Lyonnais archives, sets out to explain the purpose of this method, to present the different concepts employed, and to show how they interact. The relevance of this model is assessed through two case studies.

Contingency Theory Perspective On Management Control System Design Among U.S. Ante-Bellum Slave Plantations;, Louis J. Stewart Jan 2010

Contingency Theory Perspective On Management Control System Design Among U.S. Ante-Bellum Slave Plantations;, Louis J. Stewart

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper examines the management control-system design of mid-19th century U.S. slave plantations using a contingency theory framework. Large rice plantations that relied on forced labor and tidal-flow agricultural technology were very profitable for their owners. This paper presents a model that links these favorable operating results to a close fit between the control-system design and three key contingent environmental variables. Absentee owners hired managers to provide on-site oversight and periodic operational reporting. These managers relied on slave drivers to assign individualized daily tasks to the plantation's field hands and monitor their performance. Productive field slaves were rewarded with greater …

Sprouse's What-You-May-Call-Its: Fundamental Insight Or Monumental Mistake?, Sudipta Basu, Gregory B. Waymire

Accounting Historians Journal

We critically evaluate Sprouse's 1966 Journal of Accountancy article, which prodded the FASB towards a balance-sheet approach. We highlight three errors in this article. First, Sprouse confuses necessary and sufficient conditions by arguing that good accounting systems must satisfy the balance-sheet equation. Second, Sprouse's insinuation that financial analysts rely on balance-sheet analysis is contradicted by contemporary and current security-analysis textbooks, analysts' written reports, and interviews with analysts. Third, and most crucially, Sprouse does not recognize that the primary role of accounting systems is to help managers discover and exploit profitable exchange opportunities, without which firms cannot survive.
