On October 18, 1997, Dr. Louis Goldberg, Professor Emeritus, The University of Melbourne, passed away at the age of eighty-nine. Dr. Goldberg's interest and support of accounting history spans more than five decades. He was awarded Life Membership in the Academy of Accounting Historians in 1989 and served on the editorial board of The Accounting Historians Journal. He was also a long-time member of the Accounting History Special Interest Group of the Accounting Association of Australia and New Zealand.

The Minehill and Schuylkill Haven Railroad Company (MSH) was one of the first commercial carrier railroads chartered in the U.S. The stock traded on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange and the company managers faithfully issued annual reports to the stockholders beginning in 1828. Fifteen annual reports were discovered at the Library Company of Philadelphia, covering most years from 1844-1864. The purpose of this paper is to conduct a content analysis of these annual reports.

In this article, Mr. Smith, not only traces the life and success of Robert Giardinelli, but provides an interesting historical review of brass instruments in music in New York beginning at the end of the eighteenth century. The focus of the article is Robert Giardinelli, who established his first music shop in the low rent district of the Bronx in 1946, and in less than ten years grew into what Smith describes as "the most expansive combination of brass mouthpiece manufactory, discount retail music store, and custom repair shop for wind instruments that had ever been created." Paul Franklin Grady (1900-1984) was one of those leaders whose contributions to accounting will remain the subject of intensive study for future guidance. The purpose of this paper is to examine Paul Grady's significant contributions to accounting and auditing and to take the reader into Grady's mind as he was writing his most influential works. Grady strongly believed that in order for accounting to gain respect in society, it must be based on solid principles. His works showed this conviction.

Paul Grady's involvement in the development of accounting principles is examined in this paper with emphasis placed on the events during the period of 1955 to 1965 which led to the establishing of the Accounting Principles Board (APB, Board) and the Research Division and the publishing of Accounting Research Study, No. 7, Inventory of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for Business Enterprises (Inventory, ARS No. 7). Sergey Krivoruchko, Director of the Representation, Center of the Information Technology (Parus) in Ukraine, reports that inauguration of the new Accounting History Museum is scheduled for October, 1997. This will coincide with the Fall festivities in Moscow to celebrate the city's 850th anniversary. Preparation of the exposition is well under way. The museum will have three exposition halls and be housed at one of the Moscow universities.

The Academy of Accounting Historians hosted its 1996 research conference in Cleveland on December 5-7, 1996. The theme of the conference was "The Centennial Anniversary of the First CPA Examination." The first CPA law was signed by the Governor of New York on April 17, 1896, and the first CPA Examination was given on December 15 and 16, 1896, in Buffalo and New York City. The conference was held in Cleveland in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary Celebration of John Carroll's College of Business.

Prior to 1933, accounting literature about capacity expressed great concern with realistic, or engineering-based, accounting. During eight years of working on a series of projects on accounting for capacity, the writers observed that a breakaway from realistic accounting for capacity occurred about 1933. McNair believes that this was the great disconnect that ultimately led to the decay of management accounting until its revival in the mid 1980's. Vangermeersch, who had conferred with Tom Johnson on this matter during the writing of Relevance Lost: The Rise and Fall of Management Accounting, believes that the disconnect was probably caused by the rise …
