Voluntary Changes In Accounting Principle: Literature Review, Descriptive Data, And Opportunities For Future Research, Marsha B. Keune, Timothy M. Keune, Linda C. Quick

Voluntary changes in accounting principle represent explicit and fundamental decisions by managers to exercise accounting discretion. This paper develops an organizing framework to review prior literature on voluntary changes, provides descriptive insights on contemporary changes, and identifies opportunities for future research on voluntary changes. The voluntary change literature is robust and has examined many questions using data prior to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX). We find that contemporary voluntary changes often vary across the pre-SOX, post-SOX, and post-SFAS No. 154 periods by the materiality of their income effect, issue type, and justifications provided by managers, suggesting that manager use …

Burnout in accounting is a significant problem that has numerous impacts on organizational effectiveness. Job burnout is the result of prolonged exposure to workload pressure and excessive job demands. As accounting professionals work in a fast-paced and regulated environment, it is important to better understand whether burnout is related to job dissatisfaction within the industry. Employee dissatisfaction can adversely affect organizational change, impacting job performance, turnover intentions, and work attitudes. Because the term materiality arose within the context of financial reporting and statement assurance, internal auditors have been challenged in adapting or creating a definition that is relevant for themselves and their stakeholders. In the context of financial reporting, materiality is relevant to three stakeholder groups: 1) preparers of financial statements, 2) auditors, and 3) users of financial statements. Although materiality decisions are made by only two of these three groups--preparers and auditors--most internal auditors' conception of materiality likely has a user orientation. This study investigates auditors’ consideration of industry-level information in their assessment of client-level risk. Auditing standards suggest that industry-level information is likely to be important in the assessment of client-level risk, but the standards provide few specifics about how auditors should use industry-level information in the risk assessment process. I argue that industry norms serve as a benchmark for evaluating the risk of the client and that deviations from industry norms could indicate increased audit risk. I create measures that capture the extent to which clients deviate from industry norms using proxies for client-level risk factors. In my primary tests, …

Sodium-montmorillonite (Na+-MMT) was intercalation modified with octadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (OTAB) in aqueous suspension via an ion exchange mechanism. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study indicates that OTAB is successfully intercalated into Na+-MMT layers and/or adsorbed on the surface of Na+-MMT. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the interlayer spacing of the Na+-MMT was extended with the content of OTAB increasing, and the maximum spacing can reach about 3.80 nm. Results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis reveals the morphologies change from spherical-like particles to high-aspect ratio flakes after modification. Iodine is an essential nutrient for the human body. It is required by the thyroid gland for producing the thyroxine hormone. Human body lacks the ability to self-produce iodine. Some sources of iodine in food such as seafood, milk, egg, fruits, and vegetables can be consumed to fulfill the daily needs. Table salt is one of the sources of iodine that is routinely consumed. According to SNI No. 3556:2010, table salt must be fortified with 30–80 ppm of potassium iodate.
