We examine interactions between market risk and market-implied inflation expectations. We argue that these interactions are asymmetric and varied in time. Specifically, market risk becomes elevated by expectations of either very low or high expected inflation. Market risk does not react to expectations of moderate, stable inflation. In our analysis, market risk is proxied by VIX and market-implied inflation expectations are reflected by five- and ten-year breakeven inflation. We use daily data for 5 and 10 year breakeven inflation and VIX for the sample period January 3, 2003 – January 24, 2019 for empirical testing. We employ asymptotic VAR, multiple …

From a task-technology fit perspective, green SCM and green IS are likely to have synergistic effects on corporate sustainability. Yet, the exact mechanisms through which their perceived alignment by employees may exert influences on organizational performances are unclear. This study captures potential enablement and coverage routes at different development stages of sustainability with fit-as-mediation and fit-as-moderation, respectively. The results based on the observations collected from more than 400 organizations in the USA and China suggest that the perceived fit gradually shifts from a moderator role to a mediator role as the two green endeavors integrate with each other.

In this paper, we use metrics of Ben Graham’s value investing principle to examine the actions taken by Warren Buffet toward three prominent stocks: Amazon, Apple and Walmart. We find that decisions of investment/dis-investment and not-investment by Buffet toward the stocks are largely in line with Graham’s view on value investing. This paper provides in-depth analysis of value for three stocks and relates to research on the book-to-market anomaly in the finance literature.

Voice-controlled artificial intelligence (AI) assistants, such as Amazon’s Alexa or Google’s Assistant, serve as the gateway to the Internet of Things and connected home, executing the commands of its users, providing information, entertainment, utility, and convenience while enabling consumers to bypass the advertising they would typically see on a screen. This “screen-less” communication presents significant challenges for brands used to “pushing” messages to audiences in exchange for the content they seek. As customers are increasingly participating in online product and service reviews, companies can leverage the content of those consumer reviews to improve or retain customer satisfaction. By using a panel data set collected from Yelp, this study empirically tests the effects of voting and sentiment of customer reviews on future customer satisfaction. The results show that cool votes on customer reviews have a positive impact on customer satisfaction in the next month. While average positive sentiment score has a positive effect on customer satisfaction of a restaurant, average negative score has a negative influence. In addition, the diversity of the …

In this article, the author describes a classroom experiment in which participants make decisions to achieve the lowest-cost production. Student volunteers acting as smartphone companies are provided with confidential information representing their own cost of production and are asked to make trade decisions to form a supply chain at the lowest possible cost. This interactive classroom experiment facilitates an understanding and appreciation of the basic demand and supply model. Students also explore the motivations, facilitators, and impediments of global supply chains. Introduction

Previous research has demonstrated that different forms of mental health trajectories can be observed in service members, and that these trajectories are related to combat. However, limited research has examined this phenomenon in relation to physical health. This study aims to determine how combat exposure relates to trajectories of physical health functioning in U.S. service members.

Methods

One of the most frequently reported student learning outcomes on college campuses is leadership ability. Thus, identifying the factors associated with leadership development is an important area for research. Previous studies have found mixed results in the relationship between gender and leadership perceptions. The current study proposes that academic self-concept intervenes in the relationship between gender and leadership, and helps to explain these earlier mixed findings. In a study of 597 undergraduate students from a private west coast university, we found that academic self-concept fully mediated the relationship between gender and self-reported leadership ability. The paper presents librarians’ attitudes toward information technology, their level of knowledge in IT, and their relationship with each other. Secondary data was collected through review of the relevant literature. Primary data was collected through a questionnaire survey of 244 librarians of libraries in Pakistan. The study revealed that awareness of the potential of IT, recency of attaining professional qualifications, and knowledge in IT had a significant relationship with librarians’ attitudes. We present SmrtFridge, a consumer-grade smart fridge prototype that demonstrates two key capabilities: (a) identify the individual food items that users place in or remove from a fridge, and (b) estimate the residual quantity of food items inside a refrigerated container (opaque or transparent). Notably, both of these inferences are performed unobtrusively, without requiring any explicit user action or tagging of food objects. Risk-taking is a necessary part of business, yet little is known about how leaders might impact follower risk-taking. A theoretical model is developed in which transformational leaders are hypothesized to indirectly affect follower risk-taking through follower psychological safety. Additionally, this partially mediated effect is theorised to be moderated by follower power distance orientation. Data were collected over two time periods from followers (N = 331) to test the hypothesized model. Results provided limited support for the hypothesized model. Specifically, results indicated that transformational leadership positively affected psychological safety, but psychological safety did not predict follower risk-taking. This dissertation studies the effectiveness of a training programme to improve decision making in insurance risk underwriting. A key component of insurance risk underwriting decisions is qualitative judgement, in addition to quantitative analytical modelling. In the training of insurance underwriters, great strides have been made on the analytical side. However, the training of judgement, both intuitive and deliberate, has largely been ignored. Spillover Effects Of Clients’ Tax Enforcement On Financial Statement Auditors: Evidence From A Discontinuity Design, Travis K. Chow, Jeffrey Pittman, Muzhi Wang, Le Zhao

We examine the impact of clients’ tax enforcement on financial statement auditors. In a regression discontinuity design, we exploit the firm-registration-date-based application of a new rule that assigns firms to two different tax enforcement regimes. Our analysis implies that auditors exert less effort–evident in lower audit fees and shorter audit report lags–when their clients are monitored by the more stringent tax authority. In results supporting that audit quality improves in this situation despite the fall in auditor effort, we report that clients subject to tougher tax enforcement exhibit a lower incidence of accounting restatements and tax-related restatements. Mortality salience—the awareness of the inevitability of death—is often traumatic. However, it can also be associated with a range of positive, self-transcendent cognitive responses, such as a greater desire to help others, contribute to society, and make a more meaningful contribution in one’s life and career. In this study, we provide evidence of a link between chief executive officer (CEO) mortality salience—triggered by the death of a director at the same firm—and a subsequent increase in firm-level prosocial behavior or corporate social responsibility (CSR).
