Publications
The job of the airport CEO is complex with responsibility for the security and safety of a large and dynamic facility and, yet the FAA does not have regulatory qualification and performance standards for the position. The purpose of this qualitative multi-case study was to explore the primary attributes that could be the leading indicators in the event national standards for the hiring of airport CEOs are pursued at major commercial airports. The guiding conceptual framework of the study was to combine competency with the concept of training and development. Airport CEOs from six airport facilities were interviewed, and an …

How Access To Finances Affects Gender Inequality Across Cultures, Allison Muntin
How Access To Finances Affects Gender Inequality Across Cultures, Allison Muntin
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
While many studies of financial inclusion have been undertaken, very few discuss the inclusion of women. Financial inclusion plays a large role in unlocking resources for the disadvantaged, resulting in higher economic growth and development. The economic opportunity allows individuals and businesses to have a greater contribution to society as a whole, enhancing all aspects of the economy. This paper furthers the conversation of women’s access to financial institution accounts across cultures and what underlying factors play a key role. The results indicate that the female demographic has fewer financial institution accounts in comparison to men when: (i) a country’s …
State Ownership And Banks Information Rents: Evidence From China, Fengyan Ru, Qi Liang, Wei Wang
State Ownership And Banks Information Rents: Evidence From China, Fengyan Ru, Qi Liang, Wei Wang
Business Faculty Publications
In a lending relationship, a bank with an information advantage regarding its client tends to hold up the borrower and charge higher interest rates. We conjecture that state-owned enterprises (SOEs), with worse information asymmetry, are subject to greater information
rents. State-owned banks place less emphasis on information production and hence extract lower rents compared to profit maximizing private banks. We use the decline of loan interest rates around the borrowers’ equity initial public offerings (IPOs) as the proxy of banks’ information rents. We find SOEs in China experience
larger declines in loan interest rates around their IPOs; the central government-controlled …

Is Pakistani State At War With Free Press?, Umer Bin Ajmal
MSJ Capstone Projects
Pakistan’s media scene today depicts a similar picture where many journalists say they have been “conditioned” to self-censor news. But unlike Pavlov using a sound as a stimulus, certain “powers that be” use threat and violence to intimidate journalists and force them to behave in a certain way. Psychologists around the world say there is a lesson in this experiment: it demonstrates that human behavior, too, can be manipulated or maneuvered through conditioning.

We document that following a turnover of the Party Secretary or mayor of a city in China, firms (especially private firms) headquartered in that city significantly increase their “perk spending.” Both the instrumental-variable-based results and heterogeneity analysis are consistent with the interpretation that the perk spending is used to build relations with local governments. Moreover, local political turnover in a city tends to be followed by changes of Chairmen or CEOs of state-owned firms that are controlled by the local government. However, the Chairmen or CEOs who have connections with local government officials are less likely to be replaced.
Local Clusters In A Global Economy, Sh.A Arzuova
Local Clusters In A Global Economy, Sh.A Arzuova
Central Asian Problems of Modern Science and Education
Economic geography during an era of global competition involves a paradox. It is widely recognized that changes in technology and competition have diminished many of the traditional roles of location. Yet clusters, or geographic concentrations of interconnected companies, are a striking feature of virtually every national, regional, state, and even metropolitan economy, especially in more advanced nations. The prevalence of clusters reveals important insights about the microeconomics of competition and the role of location in competitive advantage. Even as old reasons for clustering have diminished in importance with globalization, new influences of clusters on competition have taken on growing importance …
A Data Envelopment Analysis Of West Virginia School Districts, Eduardo Minuci, Amir B. Ferreira Neto, Joshua Hall
A Data Envelopment Analysis Of West Virginia School Districts, Eduardo Minuci, Amir B. Ferreira Neto, Joshua Hall
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
West Virginia schools are consistently below the national average on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Using Data Envelopment Analysis, we estimate the technical efficiency of West Virginia school districts. We find less variation in technical efficiency in West Virginia than in similar studies conducted in other states. This appears to be because of state policy imposing homogeneity of input usage. Due to the limited variation in technical efficiency across districts, we cannot analyze how non-school inputs such as socioeconomic factors affect technical efficiency across districts. Summary statistics organized by county economic status, however, suggest that socioeconomic status plays a …

The Ethical (Or Not So Ethical) Story Behind Your Bar Of Chocolate: The Untold Tale Of A Distressed Ghanaian Farmer, Nadia Ayensah
Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics Essay Contest
In a time where the ethics of business dealings have become a key factor in the likelihood of the success of that venture due to globalization, it is important to start considering those ventures that are so popular, but whose inner working are rarely heard of. This paper analyzes the history and process of cocoa production in Ghana. It looks at the status quo with regards to the social and economic standing of Ghanaian Cocoa farmers as opposed to the earnings made by cocoa processing companies. With the statistics derived, the paper then considers who is to take responsibility for …

Nsa Site Access: Twenty-Fifth Air Force’S $95m+ Problem, Shane Smith
Aerospace & Defense MBA Organizational Action Project Reports
This Organizational Action Project (OAP) examined and addressed security clearance-based delays for Twenty-Fifth Air Force (25 AF) airmen at National Security Agency (NSA) sites and other locations with that organization’s mission systems. The approximate personnel cost associated with this issue was $95.98M at the beginning of the OAP cycle. Across the enterprise, 985 airmen were unable to perform their missions due to this problem. Given its significance, the OAP focused on discovering initiatives that could be pursued at any stage of the security clearance granting process.
Data relevant to the issue was collected from our field units and published weekly …

Environmental Hazards And Its Impact On Human Health – A Study, V. N. Parthiban Ph.D.
Environmental Hazards And Its Impact On Human Health – A Study, V. N. Parthiban Ph.D.
International Review of Business and Economics
In the name of progress or growth of industries, the business community has encouraged the coming up of the various industries using all sorts of chemicals mainly causing health problems to the human society. If any sensitive person raises any question about the health hazards that the science has brought in, the Government responds by various legislations, rules and regulations, guidelines and claims that these laws and rules would control and protect the health of the people. In this context, it should be emphasised here that every State in India is responsible for assuring and guaranteeing hygienic atmosphere and provide …
Venezuela Public Health Issue, Luke Vargas
Venezuela Public Health Issue, Luke Vargas
Global Public Health
While every country around the world faces a form of public health issues, the issues that the country of Venezuela faces are different. Their public health problem is not a disease that can be solved by science, or a cure. It’s a problem that can only be solved by the people within the county itself. The country of Venezuela now lacks the proper medical supplies needed to help cure diseases and normal vaccinations, and the only ones to blame is their government. Because their government has now refused to pay their debts to the surrounding countries they have now lost …

Public-Private Partnerships In Transportation: Lessons Learned For The New Space Era, Janet K. Tinoco
Publications
Entrepreneurial firms in the space sector have accomplished unimaginable feats unheard of just 20 years ago, such as reusable rockets and cargo launches to the International Space Station (ISS). Clearly, the private sector will continue to be a significant participant in the future of the space industry, partnering with governments and nations, to accomplish more with less. Likewise, the public sector must cope with decreased funding and worthy space objectives while balancing cost, risk, and return. Partnering with private enterprise is the best solution to meeting mandated objectives in space program advancement. This paper addresses partnerships in real property assets …

Impact On Grant Fraud Within The Government, Ashley Clark
Impact On Grant Fraud Within The Government, Ashley Clark
Economic Crime Forensics Capstones
My proposal and area of concentration will focus on the forensic accountant’s role in grant fraud. This role is more important now than ever, as fraudsters’ efforts have become more sophisticated over time. Grant fraud is particularly susceptible because more and more fraudsters are working within the company and understand the internal workings of the organization. Ensuring that grant notice of award regulations and rules are followed – and that relevant agencies and individuals follow all protocols under the budgeted term – are crucial components to ensuring the grant’s success.
Within my research paper, I will cover all areas associated …
Strategies For Small Businesses To Win Federal Contracts, Fredrick Derell Murphy
Strategies For Small Businesses To Win Federal Contracts, Fredrick Derell Murphy
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Small businesses miss out on federal contracting opportunities because of the strategies they lack. Both large and small businesses provide supplies and services through contract awards to the U.S. government while spending over $300 billion annually. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies of small business owners in the Clarksville, Tennessee and Hopkinsville, Kentucky region who have won federal contracts. Porter's competitive advantage theory grounded this study as the conceptual framework. The data collection process involved face-to-face, semistructured interviews and member checking with 3 small business owners to enhance credibility of data interpretation. Themes that …

Strategies Of Small Business Owners To Acquire Federal Government Contracts, Delores Ann Tyms
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Small business owners are not acquiring U.S. federal government contracts at the government established target rate. The government's small business procurement goals remain unmet, which represents an underutilized source of revenues for many small business owners. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies of 3 small business owners operating in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area to acquire federal government contracts to increase profitability. The thematic findings were in the context of the resource-based view as the conceptual framework. The participants answered questions in semistructured interviews and provided organizational documents for review. Triangulation of multiple data sources …

Strategies For U.S. City Government Enterprise Resource Planning System Implementation Success, Jennifer Miller
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Strategies for enterprise resource planning (ERP) system implementation success have been a focus of scholars since the 1990s. Researchers have demonstrated that ERP system implementation could cause both system failures and organization failures, affecting both operations and stakeholders. The theory of constraints was the conceptual framework for this single qualitative case study that explored ERP system critical success factors (CSFs) and strategies U.S. city governments use to successfully implement ERP systems. One city government in New Mexico with a successful ERP system served as the case study's population. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and relevant documents and then open …

The Determinants Of Traffic Citation Revenues On Florida's Clerks Of Court And Comptrollers, Corey A. Hamilton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the wake of budgetary restraints, many local government organizations are examining existing sources of revenue to exhaust available streams without increasing constituents' financial burden. Some of these revenue streams include nontraditional sources, such as traffic citations, yet little research has explored the implications of revenue generated from fines from traffic citations. Using the theory of resource dependence as the foundation, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the estimated population of the county, the unemployment rate of the county, and the personal income per capita against the number of traffic citations issued and the Florida …

Assessing The Impact Of Csr Policy And Practice On Education Of Orphans And Vulnerable Children In Indonesia, Sri Frazee
International Commerce & Policy Theses
Indonesia was one of the first countries to implement the mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) approach. This law requires corporations to allocate part of their budget toward funding for CSR programs. When implementing CSR programs, many Indonesian corporations focus on education. This research assesses how this policy has affected education, particularly for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) who are cared for at childcare institutions. These childcare institutions include orphanages (panti) and halfway houses (rumah singgah) that provides a temporary shelter for street children. This research examines the role of the Government of Indonesia (GOI) and corporations in implementing this mandatory …
