Artificial Intelligence And Work: Two Perspectives, Steven Miller, Thomas H. Davenport

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One of the most important issues in contemporary societies is the impact of intelligent technologies on human work. For an empirical perspective on the issue, we recently completed 30 case studies of people collaborating with AI-enabled smart machines. Twenty-four were from North America, mostly in the US. Six were from Southeast Asia, mostly in Singapore. We compare some of our observations to one of the broadest academic examinations of the issue. In particular, we focus on our case study observations with regard to key findings from the MIT Task Force on the Work of the Future report.

Curtain Call Executive Services, Steven D. Dolvin Jan 2015

Curtain Call Executive Services, Steven D. Dolvin

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

This case would be considered a critical incident, as it focuses on one primary issue – the valuation of a private equity investment in the underlying business. I have constructed the case based on consulting work I completed for the actual company, as they needed a valuation model for accounting purposes. So, all data, including the legal characteristics, are obtained directly from the company. However, for confidentiality reasons, the name of the firm has been changed.

This case itself concerns the valuation of an investment by a private equity firm in a mid-market business. The student must evaluate and understand …

Enacting Change Through Borrowed Legitimacy: An Institutional Perspective, Eric Shaunn Mattingly, Jonathan H. Westover Jan 2015

Enacting Change Through Borrowed Legitimacy: An Institutional Perspective, Eric Shaunn Mattingly, Jonathan H. Westover

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The notion of enacting change in lieu of the forces that promote institutionalization is troublesome to Institutional Theory, which generally predicts isomorphism as a condition of survival. Here, we offer borrowed legitimacy through coalitions as an explanation for how an organization might successfully deviate from social norms to enact change, yet still gain sufficient cognitive and sociopolitical legitimacy for survival. We explain that borrowing legitimacy through a coalition allows an illegitimate organization to impose an alternative future despite institutional pressures for its convergence to social norms, rules and expectations.

Refocusing The Lens: Singapore's Private Enterprises In China, Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred Pow Ngee How, Ye Zhang Jun 2014

Refocusing The Lens: Singapore's Private Enterprises In China, Caroline Yeoh, Wilfred Pow Ngee How, Ye Zhang

Caroline Yeoh

In recent years, financial and political instabilities have cooled economic growth in many regions. Even in this context, however, areas of strong growth remain; none, arguably, more prominent than ever-developing and increasingly affluent China, which is today a vastly different environment than even several years ago. More than ever, a wealth of opportunity subsists in this ancient land – and businesses must be able to adapt and seize these opportunities. Thus we turn towards Singapore private enterprise in China, to study once more the efficacy of the city-state's internationalization strategies in the context of the private enterprises which must eventually …

Eureka Moments In Research: Exploring Abductive Processes Using Four Case Examples, Philip Dobson, Denise Gengatharen, Richard Fulford, Llandis Barratt-Pugh, Susanne Bahn, Ann-Claire Larsen

Llandis Barratt-Pugh

Abduction plays an important but often unacknowledged role in research - this regrettably leaving a large part of the research process hidden and unexamined (Levin-Rozalis 2000), particularly important innovative or creative components. This paper, firstly, introduces abduction and discusses some important concepts related to abduction and innovation. Secondly, it presents author's own re-descriptions of previous research work. This new description seeks to describe perceived key "Eureka" moments in the research and thus make the creative components and abductive elements more visible. The paper demonstrates that much can be gained from opening a reflective space for the role of abduction in …

A Model To Support It Infrastructure Planning And The Allocation Of It Governance Authority, Steven M. Thompson, Peter Ekman, Daniel Selby, Jonathan W. Whitaker

Management Faculty Publications

Information technology (IT) requires a significant investment, involving up to 10.5% of revenue for some firms. Managers responsible for aligning IT investments with their firm's strategy seek to minimize technology costs, while ensuring that the IT infrastructure can accommodate increasing utilization, new software applications, and modifications to existing software applications. It becomes more challenging to align IT infrastructure and IT investments with firm strategy when firms operate in multiple geographic markets, because the firm faces different competitive positions and unique challenges in each market.

We discussed these challenges with IT executives at four Forbes Global 2000 firms headquartered in Northern …
