When Does Anxiety Increase Attempts To Spend Time And Money Efficiently?, Shruti Koley, Caleb Warren, Suresh Ramanathan Jun 2025

When Does Anxiety Increase Attempts To Spend Time And Money Efficiently?, Shruti Koley, Caleb Warren, Suresh Ramanathan

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Consumers today are anxious. How does this anxiety influence how they spend their time and money? Five experiments demonstrate that when consumers feel anxious because they are making insufficient progress toward a goal, they attempt to use their resources more efficiently while making decisions unrelated to the goal. This desire to be efficient makes them more likely to (a) choose jobs that offer higher payout rates rather than a higher total payout, (b) perform tasks simultaneously rather than sequentially (i.e., multitask), and (c) select products and activities that cost less money and time than usual (i.e., price and time discounts). …

Essays On Capital Structure And Ownership Structure, Yiqin Chen Jun 2025

Essays On Capital Structure And Ownership Structure, Yiqin Chen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation consists of two chapters about how ownership structure affects REITs’ capital structure and property transactions.

Chapter 1: The Influence of Ownership Structure on REITs’ Financing Decisions
This essay explores how ownership structure affects REITs’ financing decisions following natural disasters. The results show that REITs with high insider ownership tend to increase leverage in the aftermath of such events, while those with high institutional ownership, especially long-term institutional ownership, are more likely to reduce leverage. These findings provide further evidence of the monitoring role of institutional investors in shaping REITs’ financial strategies during times of crisis.

Chapter 2: …

An Exploratory Study Of Household Alcohol Consumption From The Us Bureau Of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey With A Focus On Market Conditions And Regulatory Structures, Mayya Makarycheva

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Alcohol consumption and use is not just a harmful behavior or a potential recreational activity, but it also may form a way of self-identification.

Each type of beverage apparently has their own profile of dedicated drinkers. Those drinkers are also apparently loyal to the location of purchase. However, one may also consider whether consumption in one location is a predictor of consumption in the other location. This distinct tendency highlights the intricacy of consumption patterns, as on-premise and off-premise consumption simultaneously serve as complements and substitutes in the long run in terms of both location and type of beverage.

The Impact Of Voluntary Disclosure Of Customers’ Names On Firm Value, Mu Li Jun 2025

The Impact Of Voluntary Disclosure Of Customers’ Names On Firm Value, Mu Li

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Customers are a primary source of a firm’s revenue, and a firm’s relationships with its customers are one of the key factors of its success. To reduce information asymmetry regarding customers, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) mandates that all publicly traded firms disclose sales to major customers who account for more than 10% of the firm’s consolidated sales. Firms may voluntarily disclose more customer information such as customers’ names. While managers may be concerned with the financial implications of such voluntary disclosure, no studies to date have explored how it impacts firm value. Using a sample of 768 …

This capstone project investigates the patterns, causes, and impacts of flight delays in the Nigerian aviation sector from January 2024 to January 2025. Utilizing a dataset containing flight details—including scheduled and actual departure/arrival times, routes, and airline information—the study employs advanced data analytics and visualization techniques to uncover critical insights. The research highlights discrepancies between scheduled and actual flight performance, identifies delay patterns across airlines and timeframes, and explores the ripple effects of delays on subsequent flights.

Furthermore, Nigerian passengers frequently express frustrations over flight delays, cancellations, and poor communication from airlines, yet no publicly available data systematically documents these …

Tourism, Trade, Energy, And Economic Development: Drivers Of Ecological Footprint In The World's Top Tourist Destinations, Abdul Waaje, Md Mustaqim Roshid, Sohidul Islam, Reday Chandra Bhowmik, Muhammad Abdur Rahaman, Md Mahedi Hassan

Michigan Tech Publications

Ecological sustainability, energy consumption, tourism, and economic growth interact in complex ways, a pressing concern for modern policy and study. Using data from 1999 to 2023, this study looks at the top 10 tourist destinations to see how these variables relate to their environmental impact. The primary regression analysis employs the Driscoll-Kraay Standard Errors (DKSE) approach, while Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) and Panel-Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE) are used for robustness checks. The DKSE results show that a 1 % increase in economic development reduces the ecological footprint by 0.775 %. Similarly, renewable energy minimizes the EFP by 0.140 %, …

The Caitlin Clark Effect: Evidence Of Athlete-Driven Market Disruption In Women’S Collegiate Basketball, Lawrence W. Judge, Jeffrey C. Petersen

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Caitlin Clark’s emergence as a generational collegiate basketball talent triggered a profound shift in consumer behavior, known as the “Caitlin Clark Effect” (CCE) (Lucas, 2025). This study examined attendance and venue utilization data from the University of Iowa’s women’s basketball program, spanning pre-, during-, and post-Clark periods. Results from one-way ANOVA analyses showed a statistically significant increase in average game attendance (home, away, and neutral), rising from 5,387 pre-Clark to 13,877 in her senior year (p < .001), with a sustained post-Clark average of 9,890. Arena capacity utilization followed a similar trajectory, increasing from 37.3% to 92.4%. Notably, post-Clark utilization remained at 74.3%, indicating durable fan interest. These findings provide time-sequenced evidence of a singular athlete catalyzing lasting institutional and market change in women’s collegiate sports. The study advances sport business theory by illuminating the strategic implications of athlete-driven branding and challenges assumptions underpinning facility planning and resource allocation.

Four main plan types are detailed: PPO plans (most common, flexible), HMO plans (lower costs, network restrictions), Indemnity plans (no network limits, higher costs), and Discount plans (membership programs, not insurance). Key business considerations include in-network versus out-of-network decisions, with in-network providing patient attraction but reduced reimbursements, while out-of-network allows fee control but limits patient base. The article addresses practical challenges including write-offs (difference between standard fees and insurance …

Faculty Publications

In our increasingly digitalized society, social media have emerged prominently within the educational landscape, fostering the creation of online and blended teaching-learning environments. Among these platforms, TikTok, renowned for its short dynamic videos featuring effects and music, stands out. Despite its growing popularity among youth and initial explorations of its pedagogical use by university educators, the educational benefits of TikTok remain largely unexplored. This gap is partly due to the absence of validated research tools to assess its potential educational impact. This study addresses this gap by adapting and validating a new scale, “TikTok-SportEdu”, with a sample of 250 Spanish …

Leveraging Industry 4.0 And Circular Open Innovation For Digital Sustainability: The Role Of Circular Ambidexterity, Noor Ul Hadi, Balqees Almessabi, Muhammad Imran Khan

All Works

The transition to a circular economy requires a fundamental shift from traditional linear production models to resource efficiency and closed-loop systems. Industry 4.0, with its cutting-edge technologies, has the potential to accelerate digital transformation. However, its impact on digital sustainability is neither automatic nor guaranteed. Many organizations continue to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies to boost their operational efficiency and reduce costs, often failing to align them with circular economy strategies. This study, therefore, delves into the conditional role of circular open innovation in ensuring that digital transformation not only contributes to productivity but also actively fosters circular innovation and digital …

Regulating The Metaverse: Reducing Diffusion Of Trader Responsibility, Hadar Y. Jabotinsky, Michal Lavi Jun 2025

Regulating The Metaverse: Reducing Diffusion Of Trader Responsibility, Hadar Y. Jabotinsky, Michal Lavi

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

With the emergence of the metaverse, some problems relating to trader responsibility, which had previously long been addressed, have now resurfaced and come back to life. One of these problems is the question of who should be held accountable for harm inflicted by defective or counterfeit products sold by third-party vendors in metaverse marketplaces. Under the common law, liability for defective or counterfeit products rests with the immediate seller of the product. But, unique aspects of the metaverse may make holding sellers liable unwise, difficult, or even impossible.

The law confronted a similar question after online platforms emerged. Currently, common …
