Attitudes Toward Lccp Strategies: A Comprehensive Framework, Alexey V. Semenov, Arilova Randrianasolo
Attitudes Toward Lccp Strategies: A Comprehensive Framework, Alexey V. Semenov, Arilova Randrianasolo
Funded Scholarship
Within recent years, the choice of whether to employ local culture consumer positioning (LCCP) strategies has gained considerable interest in both international marketing research and practice, particularly due to the recent rise in nationalism around the world. This current research focuses on the individual-level drivers of consumer attitudes toward LCCP strategies by creating a more comprehensive framework of the antecedents of attitudes toward LCCP strategies. Utilizing an institution-based view, social identity, self-verification, and personality trait theories, we develop a framework that encompasses elemental personality traits (agreeableness and need for material resources), perceptions of national identity, international travel, world-mindedness, and national …

Corporate Social Responsibility, Advertising Intensity, And Performance: The Importance Of National Philanthropic Environments, Alexey V. Semenov, Arilova A. Randrianasolo
Funded Scholarship
This study investigates the relationships among Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), advertising intensity, and performance in different national philanthropic environments. National philanthropic environment is defined as the propensity of a nation to be philanthropic. Employing institutional theory, we hypothesize that (1) advertising intensity mediates the CSR/performance relationship, (2) national philanthropic environment moderates the relationship between CSR and advertising intensity, and (3) national philanthropic environments moderate the relationship between advertising intensity and performance. Using a sample of 262 firms from 10 countries, the results support the moderated mediation model. We demonstrate that the success of CSR programs depends on their effective integration …
The Economic Value Of Blockchain Applications: Early Evidence From Asset-Backed Securities, Xia Chen, Qiang Cheng, Ting Luo
The Economic Value Of Blockchain Applications: Early Evidence From Asset-Backed Securities, Xia Chen, Qiang Cheng, Ting Luo
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
In this paper, we evaluate the economic value of a blockchain application. In the context of asset-backed securities (ABS) issuance in China, where some ABS are issued with blockchain technology and others are not, we find that the use of blockchain significantly reduces the coupon yield at issuance. Compared with other ABS, those issued using blockchain technology experience a decrease of 31.4 basis points in the yield spread, which corresponds to a relative decrease of 13%. We further document that the effect of blockchain is more pronounced for ABS deals rated by less reputable credit rating agencies and agencies that …

Heterogeneous Adaptability: Learning, Cash Resources, And The Fine-Grained Adjustment Of Misaligned Governance, Xavier Martin, Ilya Cuypers
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Research Summary: When can a firm make fine-grained adjustments to misaligned subsidiary governance? We examine whether and under what conditions a firm will adapt the equity stake it owns in a subsidiary, enabling improved alignment of the stake with the uncertainty in the local environment. We predict that the rate of adaptation of misaligned equity stakes depends on the experiential and vicarious learning from which the firm can draw, and that these learning effects are contingent on possessing fungible slack resources, specifically cash. Using a sample of 726 Japanese-foreign subsidiaries established in 38 host countries over a 21-year period, we …
R&D Project Portfolio Collaboration: How To Structure The Strategic Alliance, Guiyun Feng, Pascale Crama, Wenqi Lian
R&D Project Portfolio Collaboration: How To Structure The Strategic Alliance, Guiyun Feng, Pascale Crama, Wenqi Lian
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Incumbent companies target innovative firms with promising research and development (R&D) projects to rejuvenate their product portfolio. Such strategic alliances create value by combining the innovator’s research expertise with the partner firm’s superior marketing capability. The partner firm chooses the timing and payment terms of the strategic alliance, accounting for the innovator's budget and marketing capability, and the project portfolio's market interaction and revenue variability. The partner firm may prefer delayed alliances post R&D completion for innovator firms with high marketing capability when the innovator has sufficient budget or when market interaction is weak. Upfront alliances - prior to the …
Market For Manipulable Information, Hui Chen, Jian Sun
Market For Manipulable Information, Hui Chen, Jian Sun
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We study how investors, firms, and information sellers interact in a market with manipulable information. To better predict the firm characteristics they care about, investors can buy a score from a monopolistic information seller, which aggregates signals that are subject to firm manipulation. The average degree of signal manipulability has no effect on the equilibrium, while the uncertainty about manipulability becomes a new source of noise. Its contribution depends on firms' incentive to manipulate the signals, which in turn depends on the equilibrium price sensitivity to the score. The optimal design of the score weighs signal precision against the endogenous …

Recruiters increasingly cybervet job applicants by checking their social media profiles. Theory (i.e., the political affiliation model, PAM) and research show that during cybervetting, recruiters are exposed to job-unrelated information such as political affiliation, which might trigger similarity-attraction effects and bias hireability judgments. However, as the PAM was developed in a more polarized two-party political system, it is pivotal to test and refine the PAM in a multiparty context. Therefore, we asked working professionals from the United States (two-party context, N = 266) and Germany (multiparty context, N = 747) to rate an applicant’s hireability after cybervetting a LinkedIn profile …

From Net Zero To Nature Positive, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx, Ryan Merrill
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The concept of Net Zero, once considered a significant step towards sustainability, is now seen as outdated and insufficient in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. To heal our planet, businesses must collectively adopt Regeneration: a holistic, impact-focused, and much more effective Nature Strategy. It's crucial that we recognize other planetary boundaries beyond carbon and transcend a company’s responsibility beyond emissions culpability. By choosing a Nature Pledge over or in addition to a Net-Zero pledge, you will be making a profound commitment to real systemic change and planetary health.

Innovation In Dynamic Knowledge Landscapes: Using Topic Modelling To Map Inventive Activity And Its Implications For Financial Performance, Simon J.D. Schillebeeckx, Yimin Lin, Gerard George
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We examine the relationship between innovation and performance in the agricultural industry by studying how a firm's patent portfolio position in the knowledge landscape moderates the relationship between three firm search dimensions (scope, specialisation, and commitment) and the firm's financial performance. To represent dynamism in the knowledge landscape, we apply topic modelling to 67,120 patent texts of 571 firms and introduce two complementary perspectives on how knowledge can be dynamically categorised. This allows us to create two representations of the knowledge structure to identify contested (scarce) clusters of high (low) recent inventive activity and emergent clusters where knowledge ambiguity has …

Fairness Perceptions Of Artificial Intelligence: A Review And Path Forward, Devesh Narayanan, Mahak Nagpal, Jack Mcguire, Shane Schweitzer, David De Cremer
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
A key insight from research on organizational justice is that fairness is in the eye of the beholder. With increasing discussions–especially among computer scientists and policymakers–about the potential biases and unfairness of decisions made by Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, there is a critical need to consider how decision-subjects perceive the fairness of AI-led decision-making. Drawing upon theoretical and empirical perspectives on perceived fairness in organizational justice scholarship, this review categorizes and analyzes perceptions of AI fairness as they impact the effective implementation of AI in workplaces and beyond. Specifically, we review existing empirical research on AI fairness according to distinct …

Why The Ethical Use Of Ai Matters For Your Career, Jack Mcguire, David De Cremer, Yorck Hesselbarth, Leander De Schutter
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In the contemporary digital era, innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI) are profoundly transforming the business landscape (De Cremer, 2020). The buzz surrounding ChatGPT, coupled with recent assertions about the sentience of Google’s LaMDA, a large language model, underscore the prominence of chatbot technology in these advancements (Adamopoulou & Moussiades, 2020; Ryu & Lee, 2018; Tiku, 2022). Customer-oriented chatbots, an emergent application of this tech, offer unparalleled efficiency and cost-effectiveness, operating ceaselessly and responding to client inquiries in real time (Salesforce, Research, 2019). Yet, amidst these advantages lies an ethical conundrum. Customers cherish genuine human interaction and can become quickly …

Do Real-Time Strategy Video Gamers Have Better Attentional Control?, Mengxin He, Lin-Xuan Xu, Chiang-Shan R. Li, Zihan Liu, Jiaqi Hu, Xiangyi Guo, Hongyun Liu, Jin-Tao Zhang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Objective: Do real-time strategy (RTS) video gamers have better attentional control? To examine this issue, we tested experienced versus inexperienced RTS video gamers on multi-object tracking tasks (MOT) and dual-MOT tasks with visual or auditory secondary tasks (dMOT). We employed a street-crossing task with a visual working memory task as a secondary task in a virtual reality (VR) environment to examine any generalized attentional advantage. Background: Similar to action video games, RTS video games require players to switch attention between multiple visual objects and views. However, whether the attentional control advantage is limited by sensory modalities or generalizes to real-life …
Managing The Personalized Order-Holding Problem In Online Retailing, Shouchang Chen, Zhenzhen Yan, Yun Fong Lim
Managing The Personalized Order-Holding Problem In Online Retailing, Shouchang Chen, Zhenzhen Yan, Yun Fong Lim
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Problem definition: A significant percentage of online consumers place consecutive orders within a short duration. To reduce the total order arrangement cost, an online retailer may consolidate consecutive orders from the same consumer. We investigate how long the retailer should hold the consumer’s orders before sending them to a third-party logistics provider (3PL) for processing. In this order-holding problem, we optimize the holding time to balance the total order arrangement cost and the potential delay in delivery. Methodology/results: We model the order-holding problem as a Markov Decision Process. We show that the optimal order-holding decisions follow a threshold-type policy that …
The Effects Of Language-Related Misunderstanding At Work, John Fiset, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Nilotpal Jha
The Effects Of Language-Related Misunderstanding At Work, John Fiset, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Nilotpal Jha
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Demographic, technological, and global trends have brought the language used at the workplace to the forefront. A growing body of research reveals that language could result in misunderstanding at work, and influence employees' performance and attitudinal outcomes. Language at work encompasses standard language (e.g., English) as well as several hybrid forms of language (non-native accents, code-switching, and jargon). We delineate how these forms of language could result in misunderstanding. We then identify relational, affective, and informational mechanisms that underlie the relationship between language-related misunderstanding and employees' performance and attitudinal outcomes, and highlight key boundary conditions. In doing so, we uncover …
The Dark Side Of Category Expansion: Will Existing Ones Pay The Price?, Qi Yu, Ron Berman, Eric Bradlow
The Dark Side Of Category Expansion: Will Existing Ones Pay The Price?, Qi Yu, Ron Berman, Eric Bradlow
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Many retailers that manage product assortments believe that “more is better”. We challenge this conventional wisdom by demonstrating that a retailer may face more price-sensitive demand for existing categories after a category expansion. While introducing a new category to a store may increase the demand for the existing ones, this increase sometimes suggests a movement towards the steeper part of the demand curve and an increase in price sensitivity. We build a model of multi-category purchases with transportation costs and generate a series of theoretical predictions of the changes in price sensitivity after category expansion. We then estimate the model …

Tips From Sir Cluckerton: Effective And Fun Social Media With A Library Mascot, Allison Boswell, Laura Pitts
Research, Publications & Creative Work
In 2021, the Houston Cole Library (HCL) at Jacksonville State University (Jacksonville, AL) added a mascot to enhance social media posts, and the result has been successful. HCL’s simple low-cost mascot has consistently stimulated positive interactions between the library staff/faculty and students, community members and university officials. HCL’s library mascot has created a cult-like following that watches and comments on his adventures. This current discussion indicates how any library can create their own mascot regardless of budget restrictions and time commitments.
Front-Line Management In The Irish Public Service: Realities, Challenges, And The Role Of Social Capital, Arpita Pal
Front-Line Management In The Irish Public Service: Realities, Challenges, And The Role Of Social Capital, Arpita Pal
Doctoral
This study investigates the evolving role of Front-Line Managers (FLMs) within the Irish public sector as they adapt to devolved Human Resources Management (HRM) responsibilities amidst a backdrop of fiscal austerity, staff reductions, and organisational restructuring. Policy initiatives such as the One Civil Service Approach and the Civil Service Renewal Plan have shifted HRM responsibilities to FLMs without adequate formal training or resources, compelling them to rely heavily on social capital—networks of relationships and informal interactions—to bridge knowledge gaps and manage operational demands.

The Lived Experience Of Acculturation And Transnationalism Of The First And Second Generation Of Post-2004 Polish Migrants In Ireland. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Joanna Kossykowska
Doctoral
This thesis intersects the theoretical fields of migrant acculturation and transnationalism. The key research question guiding this study is: How do the first and second-generation Polish migrants in Ireland make sense of the experience of acculturation and transnationalism? Despite much research on immigrants in Ireland, qualitative studies still need to be done on Ireland's 'new' communities. Psychological research is scarce on the lived experience of acculturation and transnational connections with the home country of first and secondgeneration Polish migrants. Thus, this thesis considers migration at a micro level, and the focus is to explore the phenomenon of psychological acculturation at …

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused financial markets to suffer historic losses during the first quarter of 2020 at unseen levels since the crisis of the futures markets in 1987. In January 2020, the World Health Organisation officially declared the pandemic, bringing with it significant uncertainty levels to the global economy. The COVID-19 pandemic affected global markets parallel to a simultaneous shock from the Saudi Arabian and Russian oil price wars. As the worldwide health crisis escalated, governments worldwide were forced to take measures that led to economic lockdowns, leading to significant disruption of global supply chains and …

The world is falling behind on its commitments to tackle some of the most pressing problems of this century: climate change, inequality, and other obstacles to building a sustainable future. In 2015, all Member States of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which set out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (‘UNSDG’) and 169 targets spanning the spectrum of environmental, social and economic dimensions of development. At the mid-point to 2030, the UN Secretary-General reported that of the roughly 140 targets for which data is available, about 12 per cent are on track; more than half are moderately …
Investigating Inland Waterway Transport Through A Sustainable Development Perspective: A Case Study Of Magdalena River (Colombia), Natalia Calderón-Rivera
Investigating Inland Waterway Transport Through A Sustainable Development Perspective: A Case Study Of Magdalena River (Colombia), Natalia Calderón-Rivera
World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations
The development of transport systems significantly influences economies, growth, and welfare of populations. However, these systems can have negative consequences, such as water and air pollution, traffic congestion, noise, and biodiversity loss. To address these challenges, it is essential to implement strategies that mitigate negative effects while improving the environmental, social, and economic conditions of the population. In this regard, inland water transport (IWT) is globally recognized as a more sustainable transport alternative due to its high cargo load capacities and comparatively lower environmental and social impacts. In Colombia, the Magdalena River – the country’s most important river basin – …

Triangulating The Likelihood Of Confusion: Linguistics And Consumer Surveys, Eric D. Derosia, Jesse Egbert, Thomas Lee

This Article highlights contributions that linguistic analysis can offer in the assessment of the likelihood of confusion in trademark infringement cases. Parties in such cases often engage an expert witness to conduct a survey that measures the likelihood of consumer confusion. We show how an expert linguist can provide important, nonintuitive dynamics of corroboration. We introduce “expert triangulation” as a conceptual framework to analyze whether, and to what extent, experts in linguistics and consumer surveys can corroborate one another. That is, having two different sources of empirical evidence which lead to similar conclusions should be a benefit to the courts, …

Department Chairs’ Impact On The Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Of Their Departments, Nicholas R. Garcia Ii
Department Chairs’ Impact On The Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Of Their Departments, Nicholas R. Garcia Ii
Theses and Dissertations
Department chairs serve not only as the leaders of their departments but also as middle managers in their schools, colleges, and universities. While many department chairs see their role as having little authority, they still play an integral role in day-to-day campus operations (Hunt & Jones, 2015). As leaders of their departments, chairs can directly influence the department’s organizational culture (Schein, 2010), including the culture of diversity and inclusiveness. Departments nationwide are being held responsible for increasing the diversity of the faculty and responding to students' calls for diversity. Departmental organizational culture and the role of the chairperson are essential …

Just five years ago I was working as an Audit Manager in person (in the office or at the client site), amongst each of my subordinates, which made common work practices like knowledge sharing, responding to questions, and building team morale easy. Since then, remote work has become the new norm, which has significantly changed the communication dynamics between supervisors and subordinates. This dissertation is my personal pursuit to understanding how supervisor and subordinate auditors are currently interacting to achieve desired work outcomes, and identifying specific areas where challenges may exist. I accomplish this objective through four papers, including a …
Who Is Responsible For Corporate Social Responsibility? Investigating Employees’ Roles As Agents Of Csr, Leah Alley
Who Is Responsible For Corporate Social Responsibility? Investigating Employees’ Roles As Agents Of Csr, Leah Alley
Theses and Dissertations
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) can be thought of as involving an interaction between two parties: one party who performs the socially good deed (i.e., the “agents” of CSR), and another party who is to receive its benefits (i.e., the “intended beneficiary” of CSR). Research on employee reactions to CSR largely focuses on employees’ reactions to CSR in general, which makes it impossible to assess how employees’ roles as agents and beneficiaries of CSR influence subsequent attitudes and behaviors. Theories of justice suggest that employee perceptions of CSR change when they are and are not the agents and beneficiaries of CSR, …
