ICHRIE Research Reports

Peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodations, like Airbnb, often don’t have the same rules and oversight as traditional hotels. This can make it riskier and less predictable to stay in P2P accommodations, and the quality of the stays varies more. Thus, this study aimed to examine the following objectives: examine how different trust dimensions influence brand trust in P2P accommodations, evaluate how brand trust influences guests’ prosocial patronage behaviors, and assess how brand trust influences guests’ prosocial stewardship behaviors. The study used a scenario-based survey of U.S. travelers. Key variables included ability, benevolence, integrity, predictability, brand trust, prosocial patronage behavior, and prosocial stewardship …

The Impact Of Linguistic Styles On Message Delivery In Encouraging The Use Of Leftover Bags For Food Waste Reduction, Jae Eun Park, Chang Ma, Alei (Aileen) Fan

ICHRIE Research Reports

Plate leftovers are a major cause of food waste in restaurants. To reduce food waste, many restaurants encourage customers to use “doggy bags” to take away their plate leftovers. However, the efficiency of adopting such leftover bags is still questionable as some customers may feel embarrassed to use leftover bags. Hence, the current research aims to explore how to leverage different linguistic styles (figurative vs. literal language) to encourage the usage of leftover bags for food waste reduction purposes. Furthermore, this research will investigate the linguistic style efficiency in various restaurant dining contexts across two empirical studies. Study 1 will …

Intraday Price Bubbles And Their Influencing Factors: A Small- And Micro-Cap Analysis, Benjamin Sawyer

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores episodes of intraday stock price bubbles in small- and micro-cap stocks, a type of price bubble that is understudied in traditional financial literature. Stock price bubbles, marked by significant deviations of market prices from fundamental value, often cause undue harm to market participants and hinder the efficient allocation of capital. Despite their long history and recurring nature, the anatomy of price bubbles is still highly debated--their existence, causes, and impacts. Drawing on market efficiency, microstructure, and behavioral finance theories, the research applies a number of traditional and more recently developed statistical tests to detect intraday bubbles and …

Heat Shields And Friendship Bracelets: Features That Enable Effective Employee Resource Groups, Kevin Sakamoto Jan 2024

Heat Shields And Friendship Bracelets: Features That Enable Effective Employee Resource Groups, Kevin Sakamoto

Theses and Dissertations

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are a potentially powerful means of addressing inequalities and improving working conditions for underrepresented groups in organizations. However, little attention has been given to the motivation of employees who voluntarily donate their time in support of their ERG. The fact that membership in ERGs often coincides with a social identity group (e.g., Asian American) adds a dimension not associated with other non-formal groups (e.g., softball team) within an organization, and may increase the potential for ERGs to achieve valued outcomes. Drawing from academic literature on Social Identity Theory (SIT), employee voice, and activism, this qualitative study …

Crossing The “Valley Of Death”: How Climate Technology Entrepreneurs Navigate Relationships With Venture Capital Investors, Allison Lucas Jan 2024

Crossing The “Valley Of Death”: How Climate Technology Entrepreneurs Navigate Relationships With Venture Capital Investors, Allison Lucas

Wayne State University Dissertations

As the world faces the ongoing and intensifying impacts of climate change, a group of innovative changemakers known as climate tech entrepreneurs (CTEs) are working on climate adaptation, mitigation, and/or resilience efforts by brining innovative technologies to the global market (UNFCC, 2018; Endeavor 2022). To realize the full potential of these technologies—tools, techniques, specialized knowledge or skillsets—they must be developed, deployed, and implemented at scale (IPCC, 2000). To do this, CTEs require external funding support, especially during a crucial period of the start-up lifecycle known as the “valley of death”. In this period between development and commercialization, production costs and …

Valence Matters: An Exploration Of Small And Large Value Extra Credit Assignments To Incentivize College Students, Angela J. Murphy, Holger Amort

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

Extra credit homework can be a supplemental pathway for professors to reinforce course content and encourage students to engage in co-curricular activities (e.g., career fairs). For extra credit to be effectual, it must have valence or be attractive to the intended audience (Vroom 1964). This paper explored the valence of extra credit through two distinct assignments—one small value and the other large. Students could earn up to five bonus points or a late pass as a reward for completing an extra credit assignment. The authors expected 20% would select a late pass, but only 2% did. There was a second …

Trust Relationships: Tales From The Web, Magdoleen Ierlan Jan 2024

Trust Relationships: Tales From The Web, Magdoleen Ierlan

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Trust is an important component of any purchasing situation. In an online setting, trust becomes even more important as buyer and seller are not able to directly interact with one another. Compounding the situation is the fact that the consumer cannot directly experience the product under consideration. Organizations have attempted to address this shortcoming by allowing third parties to offer reviews of the product in question. This paper addresses how consumers process these product reviews.

By rooting this paper in trust and uncertainty reduction theory, a testable model was developed. The model was tested, and in general, more helpful reviews, …
