Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice

Many of the prevailing strategies to address corporate misconduct are focused on an increase in regulation, greater oversight, and stricter punishments for offenders. Other strategies, often found in business schools, focus on developing cognitive moral reasoning skills. Both of these theories, by their nature, underestimate the power of context in ethical decision-making, as well as the importance of affirmative efforts to develop moral character. The following article explicates elements of servant-leadership theory that serve as ethical safeguards regarding a person’s ability to make ethical decisions, as well as aiding in the formation of contexts and cultures that facilitate ethical decision-making. …

Mulching practice offers farmers an opportunity to minimize the effects of drought, water loss, and soil erosion on crop production. Plastic film is widely used as a mulching material; however, contamination of arable lands by residual plastic has become a serious concern. Synthetic biodegradable mulch films and sprays may offer a more sustainable alternative to plastic films, however current evidence on the factors that influence the suitability of these products for agricultural applications is fragmented, making it unclear under what conditions these products meet agronomic, environmental, and societal needs. In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic prompted governments to respond by implementing social distancing regulations and travel bans. Although these actions helped mitigate the spread of the virus, they also created unique challenges for businesses and their employees. Firms transitioned quickly from face-to-face work settings to remote work arrangements using video conferencing technologies (VCT). These technologies enable video calls with or without instant messaging (chat) to facilitate information exchange. For audit firms, group tasks that were previously performed in face-to-face settings had to be performed using VCT. In today’s rapidly evolving consumer landscape, understanding the motivational drivers behind consumer interaction with brands and purchase intentions is paramount for effective marketing communications. This research dives deep into the impressive and expressive consumer motivations influencing attitudes and purchase intentions for neo-luxury smart wearables. By employing a blended methodology of qualitative conceptual mapping and quantitative fsQCA analysis on consumer survey data, we uncover the integral role of both hedonic (pleasure-seeking) and eudaimonic (meaning-seeking) motivations for the contemporary neo- luxury consumer. We examine the moderating role of intrinsic motivation in the relationship between transformational leadership and work engagement. In a sample of 168 tourism and hospitality employees in the quantitative section, Study 1, we found that the highest level of work engagement is identified when the level of intrinsic motivation is highest. Intrinsically motivated employees then exhibit engaged behaviors at work. In Study 2, we opted for a descriptive design to better understand the findings of Study 1, using interviews with three experts and a three-phase coding analysis. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived job insecurity and employee task performance. In addition, the moderating influence of emotional intelligence and mediating influence of self-efficacy was examined in this relationship. Through the multi-stage sampling technique, a total of 385 employees were proportionately selected from a cluster that represents three selected Nigerian deposit money banks. Furthermore, a close-ended and structured questionnaire was utilized in a descriptive cross-sectional research design to elicit responses from these employees. A hierarchical moderated regression analysis conducted revealed that perceived job insecurity exercises a significant and negative effect on task performance. …

Food service managers are concerned with ineffective strategies for engaging with unions because managing these ineffective relationships jeopardizes employee retention and the firm's performance. We show that firm valuations fell after a key expense became more visible in financial statements. FAS 123-R required firms to deduct option compensation costs from earnings, instead of disclosing them in footnotes. Firms that granted high option pay experienced earnings reductions, while fundamentals remained unchanged. These firms were more likely to miss earnings forecasts, and they experienced recommendation downgrades and valuation declines. Our findings suggest that market participants exhibited limited attention to option costs before FAS 123-R. As we reuse the FAS 123-R natural experiment, we show how one can address confounding channels by integrating reduced-form and structural estimation.

This study assessed educational facilities in the Osogbo metropolis, Nigeria, aiming to evaluate the available educational facilities, examine student and staff satisfaction levels, and analyze their availability across schools in the area. The sample consisted of 476 schools, from which 73 were randomly selected. A multistage sampling procedure was employed to sample 1,863 pupils/students and 87 teachers for questionnaire administration, complemented by observation. Data were analyzed using Mean Weighted Average, Summation of Weighted Value, and Analysis of Variance. Findings showed that 63.4% of primary schools had the listed facilities, while 75% of secondary schools reported 81% availability. Public primary school …

Financial institutions may be liquidated by banking fraud. Bank leaders are concerned about ineffective strategies to prevent fraud and reduce revenue losses. Grounded in the fraud diamond theory and the fraud triangle theory, this qualitative pragmatic inquiry study aimed to identify and explore bank leaders' strategies to reduce fraud in the Nigerian banking industry. Data were collected by conducting semistructured interviews with nine bank leaders from six Nigerian banks and reviewing publicly accessible information from their companies' websites. Workplace bullying adds significantly to toxicity in workplaces. The present phenomenological study aims to unravel the experiences of primary school teachers who have faced bullying at work. Such studies in India are still sparse, and in-depth qualitative examination of the target’s experiences provides deeper insight into their view regarding anomalous behaviours and bullies. Semi-structured interviews of seven teachers were conducted and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.
