Research methodology

Case information was mainly acquired through interviews with Richard Gammans, chief operating officer. Dr Gammans was a visiting professor at Fayetteville State University for a year, and two of the case authors developed personal friendships with Richard. Interviews were conducted over a two-year period as the accelerator got started. In addition, one author conducted a team-building session with the management team and one of the bio-startup researchers. An interview was also conducted with Clayton Duncan, chief executive officer, to gain his agreement with developing the case.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) recommends deferring grazing of pasture paddocks at the break-of-season until feed on offer is at least 500–800 kilograms of dry matter per hectare (kg DM/ha). At this level, pasture plants are likely to be firmly rooted and have sufficient leaf area to be productively grazed.

In the current market scenario, it has been observed that biases are among the most significant factors influencing investment decisions. Among these biases, overconfidence is a common phenomenon managers tend to exhibit while making decisions. To understand the role of overconfidence bias in investment decision making, this study thoroughly scrutinizes and consolidates the current research on overconfidence bias. To achieve the objective, this study performs a systematic review of literature utilizing the PRISMA approach and examines 92 journal articles published in the last 20 years. In this paper we investigate whether the banks which fall under direct supervision by the European Central Bank (ECB) are more likely to be considered more stable and trustworthy by the depositors due to the stricter supervisory activities performed since the implementation of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM). Under the SSM, significant banks switched from national supervisors to ECB, whereas the remaining banks remained under national supervisory authorities (NSAs). Using the difference-in-difference (DID) method, we have found evidence of increased depositors’ trust in significant banks after the SSM implementation. Firm-Level, Macroeconomic, And Institutional Determinants Of Firm Growth: Evidence From Europe, Anže Burger, Andreja Jaklič, Klemen Knez, Patricia Kotnik, Matija Rojec

To examine the main drivers of firm growth, we estimated a model integrating firm-level, industry-specific as well as country-level determinants, aiming at a comprehensive explanation of firm growth. We used a large dataset of European firms for the 2005–2017 period and combined Amadeus firm-level data with macroeconomic variables and multidimensional measures of institutional framework, based on a range of sources. Using different panel regression model specifications, we found the most consistent relationships for firm-level determinants. Among country-level determinants, infrastructure quality, inward FDI, natural resources, and inequality show a consistently positive and significant relation with firm growth.

Modelling a dataset of 5230 globally listed firms through two statistical approaches reflecting the primary principles of Natural-Resource-Based Theory and Institutional Theory, respectively, this study provides evidence that sustainability initiatives developed by firms are being rewarded in the form of improved Corporate Financial Performance (CFP). Culture has a significant influence on both firm sustainability performance, captured in ESG ratings, and CFP and also interacts with other variables, including industry sector and socio-economic development of a firm’s markets. Despite considerable research on the factors influencing the use of e-government, citizens are apprehensive of e-government services due to the concerns primarily related to trust, risk, security and privacy. This study presents a meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) analysis of the findings reported by 68 prior empirical studies on e-government adoption. Specifically, the model examined the direct effects of trust in government, trust in internet, perceived risk, and perceived privacy and security on e-government trust, and its impact on users’ behavioral intention to use e-government. The findings bear significant theoretical and practical implications.

This dissertation includes two essays that examine the impact of climate risks on commercial real estate and bank performance. In the first essay, I study the impact of sea level rise (SLR) on commercial real estate (CRE) pricing and commercial lending. Using novel property level sale transactions from 2011-2018, I find that commercial properties exposed to a 6-feet sea level rise are sold at a 6% discount, which increases over time. This discount appears to be driven by local buyers and buyers’ brokers that are more sensitive to climate risks. In addition, the discount significantly rises after an extreme hurricane, …

This study investigated the impact of emotional intelligence (EI) on project leaders within the software industry, focusing on traits such as self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills. The study used a mixed-methods approach and collected and analyzed qualitative and quantitative data. Secondary data sources, including academic literature, were utilized to observe the relationship between EI and project leadership effectiveness. The findings revealed that project leaders with high levels of EI significantly influenced project outcomes, particularly in managing timelines, budgets, and team dynamics. Self-awareness was identified as crucial for effective project guidance, while self-regulation enhanced leaders' ability to manage project constraints. …

Iron furnaces (smelters) were part of that industry; these were primarily fueled by charcoal, produced in hundreds of charcoal kilns scattered across the Upper Peninsula. Charcoal burning was a major industry in its own right, and one person, Charles H.
