Stock Market Correlations To Economic Indicators, Anthony K. Quandt
Honors Theses
For this project, I researched how representative the S&P 500 (a common index of choice to represent the market) is of the economic well-being of the US. I found that stock market data can be used an as indicator of the economic well-being of the U.S.. The results do not indicate that the stock market leads to recovery, but it does suggest that it is correlated with recovery. In my analysis, I compared the S&P 500 performance to four different economic indicators: Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP), The Consumer Price Index (CPI), Average Weekly Private Wages, and Unemployment Rate. A …

Combining Bert With Contextual Linguistic Features For Identification Of Propaganda Spans In News Articles, Arjumand Younus, Muhammad Atif Qureshi
Conference papers
Recent endeavours at detection of propaganda in news articles treat this as a fine-grained problem of detecting it within fragments; and hence, transformer based embeddings perform decently in such detection. We build our propaganda detection framework on top of a transformer model simultaneously enriching it with contextual linguistic information of surrounding part-of-speech tags and LIWC categories the word itself belongs to. The evaluation outcomes being encouraging indicate a huge potential for this line of reasoning in natural language processing of news text.

Online Strategies For Small Businesses Affected By Covid-19: A Social Media And Social Commerce Approach, Julianne Itliong
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The Covid-19 pandemic has altered the way many US citizens work, live, and interact with one another. Many rules and regulations have been put in place by government officials to slow the spread of the virus because of how contagious it is in social settings. Because of these rules and regulations, many small businesses were forced to temporarily close their doors to the public in order to comply with the rules of social distancing and the ban on large gatherings. For some businesses, this shift from physical sales to digital sales has always been a part of their business models, …

We present a formal and empirical framework that links the technological capacity of a country, reflected in its National System of Innovation, with the financial constraints it faces. The paper is divided into two sections. The first one introduces a stochastic growth model based on the relative level of technological development of countries, which determines their productivity and capacity to finance innovation activities. The second section describes the empirical conditioning observed in the innovation outputs of countries determined by their financial constraints and time period relative to the economic crisis of 2008. We classify a panel sample of European Union …

Multiple factors affect a passenger's choice for the airport of origin and destination. However, many studies related to price formation or demand behavior leave one interesting factor behind, the existence of more than one airport in the same region, giving more than one option to the passenger. Two important multi-airport systems in Brazil were the object of this study: São Paulo (Congonhas and Guarulhos) and Rio de Janeiro (Santos Dumont and Galeão), the largest demand generating centers in the country, as well as two of the most important distribution centers of flights from South America. Using public databases presenting the …

Innovation is fundamental not only to individual firms but ultimately to a country's economic growth and stability. Innovation Systems assert that innovation depends not only on how individual firms and external actors operate, but also on the dynamics of their interaction as part of the system. While funding for innovation is a central theme of Innovation Systems models, there is a gap in the literature on this topic, particularly in regard to the role played by government in transition economies (Bruton, Su, & Filatotchev, 2018). The majority of the research has focused on micro/meso-level support, but there is a significant …

Stock markets of today, and will continue to in the future, rely on the metrics of timeliness and efficiency to reach optimal profits. A way stock investors have continued to strive for the best of these two factors of the business is through the use of predictive machine learning systems to help aid in their decision making. However, among the many systems currently in use, it could be said that the myriad of data that they are based on may not be sufficient. In an effort to devise an ensemble learning predictive system that will utilize an array of big …
Commodities Are Not Industries! A Value Chain Example, Randall W. Jackson, Patricio Aroca
Commodities Are Not Industries! A Value Chain Example, Randall W. Jackson, Patricio Aroca
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
Leontief and Stone both received Nobel Prizes in Economics for development and extension of input-output (IO) analysis, a framework that has gained little traction in mainstream U.S. economics. Although IO modeling has gained renewed focus in several problem domains, many contemporary economists eschew Stone's enhancements, resulting in inconsistent analytics, even in top economics journals. In this paper, we use an increasingly common approach to value chain analysis as one example that demonstrates such conceptual misunderstandings and by presenting properly formulated alternatives, we demonstrate the extent of the consequences of neglecting the Stone enhancements and important role of reproducing results.

Tree-Based Algorithm For Stable And Efficient Data Clustering, Hasan Aljabbouli, Abdullah Albizri, Antoine Harfouche
Department of Information Management and Business Analytics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The K-means algorithm is a well-known and widely used clustering algorithm due to its simplicity and convergence properties. However, one of the drawbacks of the algorithm is its instability. This paper presents improvements to the K-means algorithm using a K-dimensional tree (Kd-tree) data structure. The proposed Kd-tree is utilized as a data structure to enhance the choice of initial centers of the clusters and to reduce the number of the nearest neighbor searches required by the algorithm. The developed framework also includes an efficient center insertion technique leading to an incremental operation that overcomes the instability problem of the K-means …

SMU Data Science Review
The natural evolution of the collection and storage of sub- surface data in Texas has resulted in the current state where data for certain resources, such as water resources, have not been assimilated with state oil and gas and injection data in a meaningful way that allows for rapid understanding and data analysis for a physical land site. The consequences that result due to data from different spheres not being in sync are often duplication of work being performed but not in a consistent manner. However, the reality is that the infrastructure and impacts of these sectors are deeply intertwined. …
