Simulations Illustrate Flaw In Inflation Models, Peter L. D'Antonio Ph.D. Dec 2018

Simulations Illustrate Flaw In Inflation Models, Peter L. D'Antonio Ph.D.

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

This study questions the basic assumption of standard inflation models that there are only two forces driving price changes - underlying inflation and short-term noise. Specifically, the paper analyzes the distributions of individual price changes to shed light on an apparent contradiction: individual price changes are extremely dispersed, while measured inflation, the aggregate of individual price changes, remains relatively steady. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that the standard inflation model is inconsistent with this observation. The author reintroduces a new inflation model that explicitly accounts for the possibility of a third price-change driver - long-term sector-specific forces. Simulations show that the …

The Economics Of Quick Service Restaurant Delivery Partnerships, Robert Goch, Jeremiah Titone

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

Large chain fast food restaurants, also known as quick service restaurant (QSR) are known for price and convenience. However, one critical factor that is lacking for many QSR restaurants is customer delivery. For restaurants that offer delivery, the increased availability to the consumer can offer a substantial competitive edge. With the advent of third party delivery, those restaurants which heretofore were not able to deliver, now have the opportunity to partner with third party delivery providers. In a similar war, restaurants that simply lack an online presence can look to order aggregators to fill their needs. The size and allocation …

New York State Ela Opt-Out Rates: Understanding The Impact Of Race, Robert Goch

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

In 2009, 48 states established the Common Core Standards in response to the growing movement by state governors and corporate leaders who believed that high school exit expectations fall short of employer and college demands. Soon thereafter standardized assessments were developed that were geared to the more rigorous standards. In New York State (NYS), resistance slowly started arising shortly after the new assessments commenced in 2013. By 2016, nearly 22% of all third-to-eighth graders in NYS opted out of taking the ELA, making NYS one of the highest opt-out states in the nation. Data from the New York State Education …

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

Because students’ lives today are saturated with digital media at a time when their brains are still developing, several popular press authors suggest that media use has profoundly affected students’ abilities, preferences, and attitudes related to learning. They claim that “digital natives” (often defined as those born after 1980) have a distinctive set of characteristics that includes preference for speed, nonlinear processing, multitasking, and social learning, allegedly developed through immersion in digital technology during childhood and adolescence. The purpose of this project is to explore claims that the digital “native” generation as learners demonstrate different learning behaviors, by exploring relationships …

In fall 2012, Molloy College embarked on an educational experiment that has now been fully integrated into the curriculum of the business programs. Over these past five years, a pedagogical philosophy has developed; students learn by doing and the evidence of learning must be demonstrated. Accreditors demand that program level outcomes reflect evidence of learning. There is no better evidence than the students’ self-report and demonstration in the real world that the knowledge and the skills acquired within the learning environment can be applied. The documentation has been published in a series of conference papers coupled with student presentations at …

Public Policy Consideration Of Workplace-Based Rotating Savings And Credit Associations (Roscas) Use By Immigrants For Asset Building, Linda Silva Thompson

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

When immigrants need to save a large lump sum to purchase of home or for entrepreneurial efforts, many turn a “susu” or “partner” to build assets and secure middle-class status rather than mainstream financial services. This financial practice of pooling savings and credit based on an individual’s social connections is known as rotating savings and credit associations (ROSCAs). In these underground organized associations; participants agree to make regular contributions to an unregulated fund that participants then distribute, in whole or in part, to each contributor in rotation. Policymakers view ROSCAs as an informal or alternative financial service operating under the …

The work of these organizational leaders had been focused on the corporation’s cause. Therefore, these organizational leaders need …

Wide Dispersion Of Price Changes Limits The Accuracy Of Measured Inflation, Peter L. D'Antonio Ph.D. Jan 2018

Wide Dispersion Of Price Changes Limits The Accuracy Of Measured Inflation, Peter L. D'Antonio Ph.D.

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

It is generally accepted in the economics literature that there is an underlying inflation rate that raises the general price level and simultaneously degrades the value of money. This common force purportedly influences prices of all goods and services in the economy. Price changes of individual items can vary based on short-term, idiosyncratic fluctuations, but they are assumed to gravitate to the dominant underlying inflation rate over time. All government and private inflation measurements are based on this concept of inflation. This paper takes a sectoral approach to assess this basic assumption of a common force pulling all individual prices. …

Bilateral Trade Actions Trumped By Insufficient Us Savings, Peter L. D'Antonio Ph.D.

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

The US trade deficit with China was $336 billion in 2017, representing more than half the overall US trade deficit (Census, 2018). So, it is no wonder that policymakers, the press, and the public are focused on this trade relationship. The Administration has stepped up its criticism of China and imposed tariffs in response to unfair trading practices regarding intellectual property (Price, 2018), and China’s reluctance to open markets to US producers. The Administration has also engaged in trade spats with Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany, and others. While the goals of protecting US intellectual property rights and expanding export markets …

Connecting With Brands: Brand Personality And Brand Outcome, Valuing Persons With Special Needs (Psn), Dawn Distefano Mba, Pradeep Gopalakrishna

Faculty Works: Business (1973-2022)

There are many individuals with developmental disabilities who have the capability to make independent purchases and who frequent particular brands. Studies on buying trends of individuals with physical disabilities is available; however, there is a need for academic study to explore how individuals with developmental disabilities connect to various brands via brand personality.

The proposed embryo case study will investigate how individuals with developmental disabilities associate with particular brands utilizing the Brand Personality scale (Aaker, 1997) to predict brand outcome (e.g. brand connection, purchase likelihood, and brand choice) as well as promote inclusive marketing methods for the above-mentioned purpose.
