Relationships Between White Privilege, Organizational Belongingness, Racial Stereotypes, And Motivation To Lead, Scott Alexander Vaughan-Bonterre Jan 2017

Relationships Between White Privilege, Organizational Belongingness, Racial Stereotypes, And Motivation To Lead, Scott Alexander Vaughan-Bonterre

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite changes in the law and efforts by organizational diversity practitioners to expand leadership opportunities for people of color, there is still a sharp contrast in the ratio of white leaders to leaders of color. While much research exists regarding the diversity disparity in leadership, there is little research on factors that influence the motivation to lead. The purpose of this correlational study was to test critical race and leader categorization theories by comparing how the independent variables of white privilege, organizational belongingness, and racial stereotypes affected the dependent variable of motivation to lead of black American versus white American …

Implementation Variables Of Corporate Social Responsibility In The Financial Services Industry, Gregoire Kokomo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Abstract

Seventy percent of small and medium-sized U.S. companies experience negative performance because of leaders' lack of knowledge of corporate social responsibility (CSR) program implementation. CSR implementation is complex and requires organizational resources such as expertise, personnel, time, and money. Implementing CSR programs is challenging for many leaders. Research on CSR implementation in the U.S. financial services industry is scarce, and leaders of financial services firms do not have a clear understanding of how to make CSR implementation successful. The purpose of this study was to explore optimal strategies for making corporate social responsibility program implementation effective. The central research …

A Phenomenological Study On The Leadership Experience Of Teleworking Leaders, Patrice Ann Louie Jan 2017

A Phenomenological Study On The Leadership Experience Of Teleworking Leaders, Patrice Ann Louie

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Technological advances and the desire for employees to improve work-life balance have contributed to the growth of telework. Finding and retaining effective leadership talent are critical needs of organizations. Recruitment and retention of leadership talent can be supported by access to perquisites such as the ability to telework. Although research on teleworking employees in general, and virtual team leaders, can inform the industry, few leadership models exist that specifically help understand what it takes to be a teleworking leader. The purpose of this phenomenological study of teleworking leaders filled this gap by examining the experiences of 12 teleworking leaders with …

Survival Strategies For Small Independent Full-Service Restaurants, Haitham Nizam

The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore what strategies small independent full-service restaurant owners in the Al Rehab District, Cairo, Egypt implemented to sustain operations for more than 5 years. The restaurant viability model provided the conceptual framework for this study. The population …

Stakeholders' Perceptions Of Ethical Leadership: Implications For Organizational Success, Adejobi Sunday Odeneye Jan 2017

Stakeholders' Perceptions Of Ethical Leadership: Implications For Organizational Success, Adejobi Sunday Odeneye

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Leaders focus on the attainment of personal and organizational goals without consideration for the needs of stakeholders, especially those of followers. Ethical leadership (EL) studies' focus on leaders' perspectives represented a research gap that necessitated this study. Followers are the least researched among stakeholders; thus, this study explored EL from their viewpoints. Stakeholder theory, social learning theory, eudaimonia, and utilitarianism were the conceptual frameworks that guided this study. Twenty participants drawn from followers in a public organization in New Jersey were questioned about their experiences and expectations of EL using open-ended interview questions. Participants with shared experiences were selected based …

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This ethnography follows a small business in Indianapolis that was founded on a small business philosophy that embodied family-oriented, close-knit employee relationships. Aside from the small firm finding success in its established company culture, this small business found great financial success within a niche market. However, as part of new expansion plans, management began imposing a more traditional, hierarchical management styles. While this shift is predicted by contemporary management theory, the human effects and cultural costs of this process are worthy of study. The Desires To Work For An Organizational Culture Type Based On Personality Characteristics And Gender, Emily Lauth

Finding a company to work for is a two-way street in that a job applicant must like the company and the company must like the applicant. Job applicants and hiring companies both want to find a mutual fit. This fit can potentially be observed through the personality characteristics and gender of the applicant as well as the organizational culture type of the company. The purpose of this study is to understand how individuals view an organizational culture and have the desire to work for an organizational culture type based on individuals’ personality characteristics and gender.

Analysis Of Public Accountants: What Personality Traits And Skill Sets Distinguish Auditors And Tax Accountants In The Public Accounting Sphere?, Lauren Madison Wood

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The two main career paths within public accounting are auditing and tax accounting. Auditors render an opinion as to whether a client’s financial statements are fairly presented, while tax accountants provide tax-planning services and prepare tax returns. This study examines the personality traits and non-accounting skill sets of practicing auditors and tax accountants to determine whether there are significant differences between the types of people working in each field. Prior research has analyzed the personality and skill sets of accountants in relation to marketing professionals or financial analysts, but little research has compared the two types of public accountants directly. …

The Importance Of Empirical Research Design In Asset Pricing, Richard Followill, Brett C. Olsen, Adam Smedema

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

The selection of methodological alternatives in asset pricing analysis can serve to significantly alter the interpretation and possibly the statistical inference of empirical results. We examine the statistical and economic impact of subtle yet important changes to the methodological design of an important empirical study. We select the pricing of idiosyncratic volatility as our test model, and we find that equally valid test designs can generate significantly different results and conclusions. We estimate monthly alphas for portfolios sorted by idiosyncratic volatility and find a set of plausible monthly alphas that range from ‑1.478% to +0.044%. We expound upon the challenges …

Efficacy Of A Structured Free Recall Intervention To Improve Rating Quality In Performance Evaluations, Maximum Mgrdich-Ararat Sirabian

Wayne State University Theses

This experiment investigated the effects of a rater training on halo errors and accuracy during performance evaluations. 408 participants were randomly assigned to three groups (n=136) where they were either presented with a structured free recall intervention (SFRI), frame of reference training (FoRT), or no training. The purpose of this study was to further investigate the efficacy of SFRI against prominent training methods and no training at all. Results were not significant, and did not support previous finding in the literature. Further explanations are offered and a discussion is presented as to why these results were obtained.

Identifying Earnings Management: The Case Of Small-Cap Corporations In The United States, Cecilia W. Ricci, Susan O'Sullivan-Gavin

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of large cap companies that have been sanctioned by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for earnings management, and to test those characteristics on small cap companies to determine whether they can be used to detect earnings management in the small cap space. Thirteen non-accrual financial characteristics identified by previous researchers are tested, including both financial ratios and account levels. Univariate and multivariate analysis are used in the determination of the applicability of large company indicators of earnings management to small cap companies.
