Brandi Dahl, PharmD, is the newest faculty member in Pharmacy Practice. Originally from Oxford, Kansas, she recently completed her PGY2 Pharmacotherapy Specialty Residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy (TTUHSC SOP) and Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. Dahl received her Doctor of Pharmacy from TTUHSC SOP in May of 2017. She is actively involved in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, TTUHSC SOP Alumni Association, and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists at both a state and local level. Dahl’s current practice interests include ambulatory care, transitions of care, and academia.

Meet Dr. Whitney Aultman, from Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. She also holds a Clinical Pharmacist appointment at State of Franklin Healthcare Associates (SoFHA) where she works collaboratively with multiple providers to optimize medication therapy for patients including those transitioning from hospital discharge.  Dr. Aultman is originally from Mt. Pleasant, MI and relocated to Johnson City, TN, to join the department in 2017. JOHNSON CITY A student and a research fellow in East Tennessee State Universitys Gatton College of Pharmacy recently returned from a trip to Nashville where they participated in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacys annual meeting and related activities. 

Irene Abia, a fourth-year student pharmacist, and Dr. KariLynn Dowling, a post-graduate research fellow, are among just 85 individuals across the nation to receive the 2017 AACP Walmart Scholar Program scholarship that allowed them to attend the events on July 15-19 in Nashville with their faculty mentors.

While the national recognition for their efforts certainly is nice, members of the Gatton Generation Rx chapter say it is the difference they are able to make in people’s lives that is the real reward.

Essays On Bank Loans, Deposit Insurance, And Deregulation, Herman Saheruddin

In my first essay, using a novel dataset that merges the Dealscan database and 8-Ks between 1994-2014, I find that on average, only about 31% of bank loans are announced by firms. Among those loans announced, about 60% are cleanly announced and 40% are announced together with other events. The three-day Cumulative Abnormal Stock Return (CAR) following a loan announcement is positive and both statistically and economically significant, which on average about +39 b.p., in line with the theory of bank loan specialness. This finding is mainly driven by bank-dependent firms. Next, I find significant evidence of sample selection bias …

“A New Subjectivity: Figurative Painting After 2000" is composed entirely of paintings by women, and attempts to categorize Expressionism in new terms,” says curator Jason Stopa, a New York City writer and painter and who holds an M.F.A. from Pratt Institute. Originally from the Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York, “A New Subjectivity” features female artists Gina Beavers, Katherine Bernhardt, Katherine Bradford, Jackie Gendel, Liz Markus, and Rose Wylie. Mr. Charles (Charlie) Young and Mr. Doug Able are veteran speakers and serving as mentors throughout the Sophomore Studio 3 Wounded Warrior project.  During their interaction with the students they discussed both the physical and psychological issues related to designing for veterans: more specifically Vietnam veterans.  The students were really engaged asking intelligent questions and giving the veteran's feedback from personal experiences with friends and family members.

Cormark International, (Weaverville, NC) importers of fine exotic hardwoods, is a 27-year-old South African based, family owned business with strong ties in the African lumber industry hosted INTD sophomore students last weekend.  Jason talked to students about sustainable foresting practices and importing woods from all over the world.  A particular interesting example was how a log is selected for sustainable harvesting, whole logs milled and kept together(shown), imported in the USA, and finally dried in Cormark’s kilns before being sold.  Thank you Jason for an incredible tour of your business and its commitment to sustainable practices.

One important aspect that drives most design decisions is cost.  Learning how to estimate those costs early in the design process is critical to completing a successful design.  Dr. Kellogg, ETSU’s Construction Engineering Program Coordinator, discussed how to use R.S. Means Books with junior design students.  RS Means show the typical costs and materials needed for a particular type of construction.  Students learned how to estimate costs and will use that knowledge on their next project.

In their last studio at ETSU, senior design students presented their projects on how design can address a social issue. This semester long project included research papers, multiple presentations using various types of delivery methods (Skype, PowerPoint and large presentation boards - shown). All during the semester they worked with regional professional mentors who works with them each week. Topics included homelessness, Greek life center, and social artistry. In order to help understand diversity and human factors, Interior Design Students have exercises on Ethnic Cultures, Aging Myths and Realities and Simulation Activities. In the Simulation Activity participants are divided into groups of three or four individuals and perform activities that simulate motor and sensory changes that may accompany aging or life events. They are required to perform activities of daily living (ADL). Participants are asked to perform the tasks in their impaired state and cannot remove simulating devices until the exercise is completed. A playable case study is an immersive, transmedia story controlled by a puppetmaster (i.e., teacher), but played by participants who advance the plot through their contributions and interactions with fictional characters. They are also explicitly educational, consisting of both the immersive, transmedia story, as well as in-game and out-of-game materials provided for educational scaffolding and reflection. We present the Microcore playable case study to illustrate the potential of this new type of experiential simulation that incorporates aspects of Alternate Reality Games (ARGs) to increase immersion. Domestic and international regulatory efforts to prevent another financial crisis have been converging on the idea of trying to end the problem of “too big to fail”—that systemically important financial firms take excessive risks because they profit from success and are (or at least, expect to be) bailed out by government money to avoid failure. The legal solutions being advanced to control this morally hazardous behavior tend, however, to be inefficient, ineffective, or even dangerous—such as breaking up firms and limiting their size, which can reduce economies of scale and scope; or restricting central bank authority to bail out failing …

Most of the regulatory measures to control excessive risk taking by systemically important firms are designed to reduce moral hazard and to align the interests of managers and investors. These measures may be flawed because they are based on questionable assumptions. Excessive corporate risk taking is, at its core, a corporate governance problem. Shareholder primacy requires managers to view the consequences of their firm’s risk taking only from the standpoint of the firm and its shareholders, ignoring harm to the public. As a subcategory of contract negotiations, corporate transactions present information problems that have not been fully analyzed. In particular, the literature does not address the possibility that parties may simply be unaware of value-increasing transaction terms or their outside option. Such unawareness can arise even for transactions that attract many competing parties, if the bargaining process is such that (1) the price terms are negotiated and fixed prior to the non-price terms, contrary to the standard assumption; and (2) some of the non-price terms remain private for some period of time.

From its inception, the federal securities law regime created and enforced a major divide between public and private capital raising. Firms that chose to “go public” took on substantial disclosure burdens, but in exchange were given the exclusive right to raise capital from the general public. Over time, however, the disclosure quid pro quo has been subverted: Public companies are still asked to disclose, yet capital is flooding into private companies with regulators’ blessing.

In many cases of criminality within large corporations, senior management does not commit the operative offense — or conspire or assist in it — but nonetheless bears serious responsibility for the crime. That responsibility can derive from, among other things, management’s role in cultivating corporate culture, in failing to police effectively within the firm, and in accepting lavish compensation for taking the firm’s reins. Criminal law does not include any doctrinal means for transposing that form of responsibility into punishment. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (“FCPA”), which bans corporations from offering bribes to foreign government officials, was enacted during the Watergate era’s crackdown on political corruption but remained only weakly enforced for its first two decades. American industry argued that the law created an uneven playing field in global commerce, which made robust enforcement politically unpopular. This Article documents how the executive branch strategically under- enforced the FCPA, while Congress and the President pushed for an international agreement that would bind other countries to rules similar to those of the United States. Benchmarks are metrics that are deeply embedded in the financial markets. They are essential to the efficient functioning of the markets and are used in a wide variety of ways—from pricing oil to setting interest rates for consumer lending to valuing complex financial instruments. In recent years, benchmarks have also been at the epicenter of numerous, multi-year market manipulation scandals. Oil traders, for example, deliberately execute trades to drive benchmarks lower artificially, allowing the traders to capitalize on the manipulated benchmarks.
