Learning From Others' Failures: The Effectiveness Of Failure Stories For Managerial Learning, Ronald Bledow, Bernd Carette, Jana Kuehnel, Daniela Pittig Mar 2017

Learning From Others' Failures: The Effectiveness Of Failure Stories For Managerial Learning, Ronald Bledow, Bernd Carette, Jana Kuehnel, Daniela Pittig

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School of Business

We argue that other peoples' failures provide a neglected source of managerial learning that is associated with enhanced learning transfer. Due to their negative valence, stories about other peoples' failures as compared to stories about other peoples' successes should elicit a more pronounced motivational response, such that people elaborate the content of failure stories more actively. As a consequence, the knowledge gained from failure stories will more likely be applied on a transfer task. We expect this motivational response to failure stories and its benefits for learning to be most pronounced for people who view failures as valuable learning opportunities. …

Asian Multiculturalism In Communication: Impact Of Culture In The Practice Of Public Relations In Singapore, Su Lin Yeo, Augustine Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School of Business

This study aims to understand the role of cultural values in influencing public relations practice in Singapore. Given that Singapore exhibits a hybrid of cultures, it purposes to comprehend how multiculturalism is operationalized and to uncover if the values that have a greater influence on organizational communication resemble those in individualistic or collectivistic societies. Using Gudykunst's (1998) seven dimensions that influence individualism-collectivism on communication as a guide, this study interviewed 20 public relations practitioners in Singapore. Our findings showed that although the patterns expressed is slightly more consistent with those found in collectivistic cultures, it does not resemble collectivism in …

Online Students Demographics And Motivations To Enroll In Class, Weiling Zhuang, Viviane Billings

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Distance education traces its origins to mid-19th century Europe and the United States. With the development of infrastructure and technology, universities began to offer distance education via the internet to reach the prospective students, facilitate the learning process and accommodate their needs. With an increase in popularity and demand, the enrollment for online classes has been strong for the past ten years. According to Allen and Seaman (2013), there were 572,000 more online students in fall 2011 than in fall 2010 for a new total of 6.7 million students taking at least one online course. Another recent study conducted by …

Companies will constantly need people to sell something for them. As Grant Cardone, author of Sell or Be Sold: How to Get Your Way in Business and in Life, puts it, "Great salespeople are literally the engine of every economy in the world." This is evident as the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that over 13.6 million Americans are in sales and related occupations.

Looking at specific industries; the real estate sector is projected to grow faster than any other sales sector over the next decade, according to the Department of Labor. With a 14 percent growth rate expected, this …

Evaluation Of It Ethical Scenarios: A Multidimensional Analysis, Kristen L. King, Julia C. Graham

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Computer use is ubiquitous in today’s society. Many users work with computers in their personal and professional lives every day. As this usage continues to increase, misuse of computing resources causes harm to more and more individuals, businesses and society. This misuse and computer crimes have been problems for organizations for at least 20 years now (Panettieri, 1995; Straub and Nance, 1990). Ethical dilemmas have been used as a research technique to study business ethics for years and more recently, this research method has been extended to the field of Information Technology (Kreie and Cronan, 1998; Straub and Nance, 1990). …

Competency Development In University Business Students: A Multiperspective Analysis, Karlee A. Tanel, Michael T. Roberson

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

University business schools work to produce graduates who are knowledgeable in each of the business disciplines (e.g., accounting, management) as well as subject matter related to their chosen major or concentration area. B-schools also seek to develop some of the key professional competencies that are needed by individuals working in business. There are other competencies that may be important in business but are either impossible or impractical to develop in a university environment, and graduates must develop those competencies after beginning their business careers.

We investigated three research questions relating to the importance, trainability, and development of 22 professional competencies …

Using A Work System Perspective To Expand Bpm Use Cases For Research, Steven Alter, Jan Recker

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Business Process Management (BPM) has developed as a research field centered within the computer and information systems sciences – but also touching other fields as well. Recently, van der Aalst (2013) analyzed the results of some of these research efforts and identified a set of research topics in the form of a series of BPM use cases that primarily emphasize technological and computational challenges and solutions in BPM academia. Ideally, however, BPM should also address managerial and organizational challenges that are not fully reflected in the existing use cases identified by van der Aalst (2013). We propose drawing on work …

Why Men Trophy Hunt, Chris T. Darimont, Brian F. Codding, Kristen Hawkes Mar 2017

Why Men Trophy Hunt, Chris T. Darimont, Brian F. Codding, Kristen Hawkes

Big-Game and Trophy Hunting Collection

The killing of Cecil the lion (Panthera leo) ignited enduring and increasingly global discussion about trophy hunting. Yet, policy debate about its benefits and costs focuses only on the hunted species and biodiversity, not the unique behaviour of hunters. Some contemporary recreational hunters from the developed world behave curiously, commonly targeting ‘trophies’: individuals within populations with large body or ornament size, as well as rare and/or inedible species, like carnivores. Although contemporary hunters have been classified according to implied motivation (i.e. for meat, recreation, trophy or population control, as well the ‘multiple satisfactions’ they seek while hunting (affiliation, …

Agricultural Education and Communication

A marketing plan was designed for Buchanan Hollow Nut Company (BHNC) in the summer of 2016 to redesign the company brand. Additionally, the author conducted research to determine if the implementation of bar codes and scanning would improve internal efficiency.

Utilizing the company’s owner, and famous artist, Sharleen Robson, the author created a tasteful watercolor design to update the logo for BHNC. Furthermore, by contacting the current packaging company, Legend Packaging Group, the author received estimated costs for adding a bar code to each product. These barcodes were then printed and added to the processing boxes in the storage facility …

The Effect Of Government Involvement On Chinese Firms' Corporate Entrepreneurial Activities: The Case Of Chinese Automobile Industry, Grace Chun Guo, Crystal X. Jiang, Qin Yang

Management Department Faculty Journal Articles

In recent decades many emerging markets (EMFs) have undertaken entrepreneurial transformations to adapt to institutional transition and industrial change. Corporate entrepreneurship (CE) provided EMFs viable ways to revitalize, reconfigure, and transform successfully with the dynamic environment. Although previous research examined government roles on EMFs' CE activities, little is known about the mechanisms of how government exerts influence on CE activities. To fully understand CE of EMFs, we propose a stage model to explore specific roles governments play that affect CE activities over time. In particular, we investigate how governments' grabbing hand, helping hand, and invisible hand roles affected Chinese auto …

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) often allows participants to redeem food benefits for various brands at different costs. To aid the program’s food cost containment efforts, it is important to understand the individual and store characteristics associated with brand choices. This study used the WIC Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) data for 239,062 Virginia WIC participants’ brand choices in infant fruits and vegetables (F&Vs) and whole grain bread in May 2014–February 2015, one of the first such data sets available in the U.S. for research purposes. Mixed effects logistic regression models were used to analyze …

Collaborate Or Compete: Examining Manufacturers’ Replacement Strategies For A Substance Of Concern, Tim Kraft, Gal Raz Mar 2017

Collaborate Or Compete: Examining Manufacturers’ Replacement Strategies For A Substance Of Concern, Tim Kraft, Gal Raz

Business Publications

The recent proliferation of media reports on substances of concern has increased consumer fears, sparked scientific debate, and highlighted the need for stronger chemical regulations. When a substance of concern is identified (e.g., bisphenol-A (BPA) in reusable water bottles), manufacturers face difficult trade-offs in deciding whether to proactively replace the substance in their products or to defer replacement and wait to see if regulation occurs. In this paper, we examine when opportunities exist for manufacturers to avoid competitively replacing (i.e., making their replacement decisions on their own), and instead, collaborate to replace a substance of concern. We model a vertically …

Microfoundations Of Organizational Paradox: The Problem Is How We Think About The Problem, Ella Miron-Spektor, Amy Ingram, Josh Keller, Wendy K. Smith, Marianne W. Lewis Mar 2017

Microfoundations Of Organizational Paradox: The Problem Is How We Think About The Problem, Ella Miron-Spektor, Amy Ingram, Josh Keller, Wendy K. Smith, Marianne W. Lewis

Publications

Competing tensions and demands pervade our work lives. Accumulating research examines organizational and leadership approaches to leveraging these tensions. But what about individuals within firms? Although early paradox theory built upon micro-level insights from psychology and philosophy to understand the nature and management of varied competing demands, corresponding empirical studies are rare, offering scarce insights into why some individuals thrive with tensions while others struggle. In response, we contribute to the microfoundations of organizational paradox with a theoretical model and robust measures that help unpack individuals' varied approaches to tensions. Following rigorous scale development in Study 1, including samples from …

Does Regulation Of Physicians Reduce Health Care Spending?, Scott Barkowski Mar 2017

Does Regulation Of Physicians Reduce Health Care Spending?, Scott Barkowski

Publications

The medical community argues that physician fear of legal liability increases health care spending. Theoretically, though, the effect could be positive or negative, and empirical evidence has supported both cases. Previous studies, however, have ignored the fact that physicians face risk from industry oversight groups like state-level medical licensing boards in addition to civil litigation risk. This article addresses this omission by incorporating previously unused data on punishments by oversight groups against physicians, known as adverse actions, along with malpractice payments data to study state-level health care spending. My analysis suggests that, contrary to conventional wisdom, spending does not rise …

Exploring The Utility Of Mindfulness And Self-Regulation Assignments For Business Students, Michael T. Roberson

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

There are a number of personal habits, disciplines, and activities that are associated with success for both college students and business professionals. Goal-setting, concentration and focus, and the ability to delay gratification have long been known to be key factors. More recent research has shown that mindfulness, self-assessment, and self-regulation are also important to success. However, today’s world poses serious, new challenges to the student or professional who wishes to think and learn effectively and to achieve his/her goals.

Previously, a Learning Academy was created to lead volunteer students through a series of self-assessments, worksheet exercises, personal reflections, and group …

Improving Student Effort On A Learning Outcome Assessment: Benchmarks, Options, And Results, Michael T. Roberson, Thomas Erekson

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Mission-driven accreditation standards were established by AACSB in 2003 and updated in 2013, and these standards required accredited business and accounting programs to establish and assess student learning outcomes. This approach was a major change for AACSB accreditation, so beginning in 2003 universities were given a few years to design and implement their Assurance of Learning (AoL) programs. The result has been an array of measures to assess student learning outcomes. All too often, however, the AoL programs were stand-alone efforts to comply with the standards for assessment and were not linked to meaningful continuous improvement processes.

Assessing basic business …

Identifying Key Factors Of Rail Transit Service Quality: An Empirical Analysis For Istanbul, Erkan Isikli, Nezir Aydin, Erkan Celik, Alev Taskin Gumus

Journal of Public Transportation

Providing a high quality of service in public transportation is essential to reduce dissatisfactions stemming from traffic congestion and noise. Public transport providers need to find ways to dilute the effects of immoderate use of private cars in big cities while maintaining a sufficient level of customer satisfaction. This study aimed to identify the key service quality (SQ) factors that drive passenger satisfaction in Istanbul’s rail transit (RT) system using data obtained from an extensive survey conducted by the Istanbul Public Transportation Co. A total of 11,116 passengers who used rail transport from May 15–June 3, 2012, and June 17–July …

Effect Of Price Reduction And Increased Service Frequency On Public Transport Travel, Inge Brechan Mar 2017

Effect Of Price Reduction And Increased Service Frequency On Public Transport Travel, Inge Brechan

Journal of Public Transportation

A random effects meta-analysis of the results from 15 projects involving price reduction and 9 projects involving increased service frequency showed that both price reduction and increased service frequency generated public transport travels. On average, the increased service frequency projects generated more travels by public transport than the price reduction projects. In the increased service frequency projects the proportion of travels generated by the increased frequency was strongly influenced by the size of the frequency increase. In the price reduction projects, we did not find a significant effect of the size of the price reduction on the proportion of travels …
