Strategies For Value Creation Through Sustainable Manufacturing, Fazleena Badurdeen, Ibrahim S. Jawahir
Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing Faculty Publications
Making the business case and establishing strategic directions for sustainable manufacturing requires a collaborative effort. Strategic capabilities that can help create sustainable value for all stakeholders must be identified. Technologies and methodologies to provide these capabilities for implementation must then be developed, through public-private partnerships. This paper presents major business imperatives and strategic capabilities necessary to enable value creation through sustainable manufacturing identified based on extensive engagement with business leaders and industry professionals as well as academic experts and government agency representatives. The paper also presents a future vision for sustainable products, processes and systems that can be derived from …
Sustainable Manufacturing Performance Evaluation: Integrating Product And Process Metrics For Systems Level Assessment, Aihua Huang, Fazleena Badurdeen
Sustainable Manufacturing Performance Evaluation: Integrating Product And Process Metrics For Systems Level Assessment, Aihua Huang, Fazleena Badurdeen
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper builds on the previously developed product sustainability index (ProdSI) and process sustainability index (ProcSI), and presents a framework for sustainable manufacturing performance evaluation at the systems level. The framework is then used to propose a comprehensive set of metrics for the enterprise level following a five-stage metrics hierarchy (individual metrics, sub-clusters, clusters, sub-index and index). The 6R concept (reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, redesign and remanufacture), total life-cycle emphasis, and triple bottom line (TBL) are considered for selecting relevant metrics. Finally, the metrics are integrated to develop an index for enterprise level sustainability assessment and …

Investment Bank Expertise In Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions, Matteo P. Arena, Michael Dewally
Investment Bank Expertise In Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions, Matteo P. Arena, Michael Dewally
Finance Faculty Research and Publications
We study the influence of country expertise of investment banks in facilitating cross‐border merger deals by analyzing a large international sample of merger and acquisition (M&A) deals. We provide evidence that the geographical proximity, cultural affinity, and local experience of investment banks advising bidding firms on cross‐border M&A deals significantly increase the probability of completion of the deal, significantly decrease the time required to complete the deal, and significantly increase the operating performance of the acquiring firm after the deal. Our results are robust to firm, deal, country‐specific factors, and endogeneity concerns.

A Needs-Ictd Strategy Alignment Foundation For The Measurement Of Ictd Impact: Three Case Studies In South Africa, Gugulethu Q. Baduza, Caroline P. Khene
The African Journal of Information Systems
Access to ICTD projects has increased over the years; however, they have not significantly changed the lives of the targeted communities. This discrepancy relates to the gap that exists between the reality of the community, its needs and the ICTD strategy of the project. This research paper presents a Needs-ICTD strategy alignment framework to support the alignment of ICTD strategy, and the development and promotion of contextual needs of marginalized areas. The framework also contributes to the identification of preliminary impact indicators, which can support impact assessment. Through a multi-case study investigation of the Siyakhula Living Lab and the SAP …

It Services Offshoring To Africa: Assessing The Attractiveness And Readiness Of Nigeria, Joshua O. Omoju
The African Journal of Information Systems
This paper presents one of the first comprehensive analyses of Nigeria’s future readiness and attractiveness as a potential destination for IT-enabled services offshoring. The paper examines existing literature on IT services offshoring to Africa, and presents results from in-depth evaluation of seven important location selection criteria. The study indicates that while Nigeria appears to be making progress in many areas, the country is neither yet ready nor attractive as an offshoring destination. Nevertheless, the analysis suggests that Nigeria might already be on the path to attaining readiness in the future. However, significant hurdles will need to be surmounted if Nigeria …

Ict Infrastructure And It’S Impact On National Development: A Research Direction For Africa, Felix Bankole Dr, Lucas Mimbi
The African Journal of Information Systems
Discussions on Development that encompasses how ICTs can make a difference in climate, political, health disturbances and business environment require a multidisciplinary approach which demand contributions from IS community, the private sector, development agencies, practitioner and other academia. This would enable the development community to identify the objectives of technology for empowerment and how they should be achieved in the practice of national development. This study serves as a response to the call for more macro/micro level policy research on the role of ICT on national development. The paper reviews the previous research in this domain and proposes a research …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: March 17, 2017, Eric Thompson
Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) 1 rose by 2.08% during February of 2017. The indicator also rose rapidly in January. The two increases indicate that economic growth will be strong in Nebraska during the second half of 2017. Among the components of the indicator, business expectations were very strong during February. Further, initial claims for unemployment insurance declined during the month, a sign of a strengthening labor market. The value of the U.S. dollar also fell during February, which is a positive sign for Nebraska’s export-oriented businesses.

Corporate Social Responsibility In The Health Care Sector, Dina Siniora
Corporate Social Responsibility In The Health Care Sector, Dina Siniora
Graduate Student Research Symposium
The challenge for the health care sector is to continually explore ways to ensure that the welfares of individual patients remain the utmost primacy and simultaneously promote health care equity via corporate socially responsible activities (CSR). There is an essential need to truly embrace CSR and ethical principles that would promote equal distribution of health care resources. Relevant CSR activities would be achieved by making the most significant health problems in a given society a priority of health care organizations. CSR in health care applied to hospitals and pharmaceutical companies should promote shared values and common ethical principles in new …
An Analogy Explanation For The Evaluation Of Entrepreneurial Opportunities, Ugur Uygur
An Analogy Explanation For The Evaluation Of Entrepreneurial Opportunities, Ugur Uygur
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Entrepreneurs evaluate opportunities under conditions of uncertainty; they make judgments. In order to understand these evaluations, I develop an analogical model that represents an entrepreneurial opportunity in the mind of an individual. The model proposes that an opportunity is an analogical knowledge transfer from a source business domain to a target business domain. According to the model, the cognitive distance between the domains influences the opportunity evaluation. Additionally, the inspiration behind the analogy construction influences the opportunity evaluation. The empirical design employs a hypothetical scenario experiment and the results show that the two analogical properties matter for evaluation.

Interest-Based Bargaining: Changing Employer-Employee Relations At Youngstown State University, Patrick W. Carlton
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
This study is based upon interviews conducted with over two dozen individuals centrally involved with the collective bargaining movement at Youngstown State University of Ohio. (YSU) The experiences and memories of several participants extend back to the 1960’s, at which time they were newly appointed faculty members. Within the group are several retired persons who spoke from the comfortable position of relative political invulnerability. Others were at the time of their interviews actively engaged in university teaching and administration. Initial interviews concerning the newly-established Interest-based bargaining process took place within eight months of the negotiatory events, well before the “ravages …

It has been more than 30 years since Dr. Daniel Holland, an Associate Professor in the Management Department in the Huntsman School of Business who teaches entrepreneurship and strategy, served in Japan as a voluntary representative of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has always hoped to return to the culture and people he grew to love, so the Fulbright Programʼs post detailing Japanʼs government initiative to focus on entrepreneurship caught his eye. He feels honored to receive a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to teach in Kyoto, Japan, for a portion of the 2017-2018 academic year.

Many Americans feel stress and uncertainty about their finances. In a recent Federal Reserve report, nearly one-third of survey respondents said theyʼre “just getting by” financially, and about one-quarter reported struggling to pay bills. Almost half of the respondents said they would be unable to come up with just $400 for an emergency. Emotional responses to financial stress can further compound the effects of financial stress. Financial strain may also have serious consequences for families and marriages. The Institute for Divorce Financial Analysis reports that money issues are the third highest cause of divorce, at 22%.

Leaders Of The Pack: Women And The Future Of Veterinary Medicine, Julie Kumble, Donald Smith
Leaders Of The Pack: Women And The Future Of Veterinary Medicine, Julie Kumble, Donald Smith
New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond
Veterinary medicine has undergone sweeping changes in the last few decades. Women now account for 55 percent of the active veterinarians in the field, and nearly 80 percent of veterinary students are women. However, average salaries have dropped as this shift has occurred, and even with women in the vast majority, only 25 percent of leadership roles are held by women. These trends point to gender-based inequality that veterinary medicine, a profession that tilts so heavily toward women, is struggling to address. How will the profession respond? What will this mean for our students and schools? What will it mean …

Proactive Personality And Voluntary Turnover: The Moderating Effects Of Development And Perceived Career Opportunities, Amy F. Huber
Proactive Personality And Voluntary Turnover: The Moderating Effects Of Development And Perceived Career Opportunities, Amy F. Huber
Theses and Dissertations
The present thesis reports the research and quantitative examination of the relation
between proactive personality and voluntary turnover, as well as the moderating influences of participation in development activities and perceptions of available career opportunities. Zero- order correlations and moderated binary logistic regression are used to test the hypotheses within an archival data set of 295 participations from a multinational European organization. A significant correlation was found between proactive personality and participation in developmental activities. Additionally, participation in developmental activities was found to be a negative predictor of voluntary turnover. Results of the moderated logistic regression analysis showed that both …
