Practical Challenges Of Differentiated, For-Profit Social Ventures, Gabriel M. Blake
Practical Challenges Of Differentiated, For-Profit Social Ventures, Gabriel M. Blake
Honors Thesis
When social entrepreneurs create a for-profit enterprise focused on addressing a particular public need, there are many specific challenges and barriers that stand in their way of becoming a sustainable, revenue-generating business. Many of these challenges are currently unknown to many nascent social entrepreneurs, and in most cases, these challenges will cause the venture to fail or never reach operational scale (Renko, 1047).
Social entrepreneurs face many unique challenges and barriers that traditional entrepreneurs do not necessarily encounter. Typical challenges include balancing the needs of disparate stakeholders (Smith, 464), maintaining robust cash flows and profits while simultaneously remaining committed to …

How To Conduct A Mini-Ethnographic Case Study: A Guide For Novice Researchers, Patricia I. Fusch Ph.D., Gene E. Fusch, Lawrence R. Ness
The Qualitative Report
The authors present how to construct a mini-ethnographic case study design with the benefit of an ethnographic approach bounded within a case study protocol that is more feasible for a student researcher with limited time and finances. The novice researcher should choose a design that enables one to best answer the research question. Secondly, one should choose the design that assists the researcher in reaching data saturation. Finally, the novice researcher must choose the design in which one can complete the study within a reasonable time frame with minimal cost. This is particularly important for student researchers. One can blend …

On Sport and Society
Now that the World Baseball Classic has ended and the United States has finally notched a WBC championship, it is time to reflect on the event. For me, it was a great success not because the U.S. won, although that was important, but rather for a number of other reasons.
Cultural Diversity In Student Ministry Leadership, Steven Zhou
Cultural Diversity In Student Ministry Leadership, Steven Zhou
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
In an attempt to contribute to how ministries and Christian academia is addressing issues of diversity, I am conducting a study to analyze correlations between ethnicity and styles/values of leadership. The goal is to uncover whether or not a particular ethnicity generally prefers one style of leadership over another. Past research on the subject has already seen that, in the business world, certain practices work better than others. For example, those from an Asian culture are more likely to prefer formality and authority as opposed to the collaborative and relationship-oriented style of leadership found in America. I will contribute to …

Essays On The Tax Policy And Insider Trading, Han Shi
Essays On The Tax Policy And Insider Trading, Han Shi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the first essay I examine the relation between firm advertising and tax aggressiveness. Advertising increases firm visibility in both the product and the financial market. While investors would appreciate more tax savings, they are aware of the negative impact of tax aggressiveness on consumers’ views of the firm and hence its competitive positions in the product market. We find that firms that spend more on advertising have fewer tax sheltering activities, lower book-tax differences, and higher cash effective tax rates. Specifically, an increase of 1% on Advertisingi,t (ADVGPi,t), the firm pays an additional tax of $0.70 …

On July 26–28, 2015, at George Washington University, 25 senior scholars from multiple disciplines gathered to attend a path-breaking event on women and leadership theory. The event, named The Women and Leadership Theory Think Tank (hereafter “Think Tank”), was a part of a targeted and comprehensive effort to “move the needle” forward on women and leadership theory. Beginning in 2013, Drs. Susan R. Madsen and Julia Storberg-Walker (with others) designed and delivered a series of related events, and women from all over the world have participated. The Think Tank was one strategy to scale up the impact on women and …

Determining Field Requirements Of The Air Force Supply System: A Delphi Study, Dominic G. Baker
Determining Field Requirements Of The Air Force Supply System: A Delphi Study, Dominic G. Baker
Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force Supply System can be a convoluted network of organizations with different classes of supply being managed by different organizations. Individuals deployed to austere environments must interact with multiple organizations to get logistics support. Recent supply organizational changes have improved the Air Forces ability to present combat support capability to the combatant commands and deployed logisticians. This research focused on simplifying the process by identifying the need for and determining the ideal capabilities provided by a Logistics Command and Control support cell that would provide a touch point for logistics support to those in a deployed or austere …
Maintenance Officer Initial Skills Training Timeline, Aaron T. Vincent
Maintenance Officer Initial Skills Training Timeline, Aaron T. Vincent
Theses and Dissertations
There is a current gap in training literature with regards to the benefits of on-the-job training (OJT) prior to formal training. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to explore the best time to schedule new logistics managers to attend formal classroom training by using Aircraft Maintenance Officer Course (AMOC) as a real world example. Two surveys were created, a survey of new aircraft maintenance (21A) Officers and a survey of 21A leadership, to collect the primary data for this research. Through the data this research proposes a timeline for the addition of OJT prior to AMOC in order to …
Engineering Change Orders And Their Impact On Dod Acquisition Contracts, Ian S. Cordell
Engineering Change Orders And Their Impact On Dod Acquisition Contracts, Ian S. Cordell
Theses and Dissertations
Cost growth is a problem DoD wide. Cost Estimators attempt to remedy this problem by accounting for uncertainty in the estimates they complete. They use tools such as Engineering Change Orders (ECO’s) to account for the uncertainty, by applying a percentage to the final amount estimated. The following research gives the acquisition community a more precise tool to predict whether a DoD Acquisition Contract will have an Engineering Change Order, which can then be used also during programmatic cost estimating, and also a method for predicting the proper amount of ECO to apply when certain variables are present. The study …
Perception Vs. Reality: Improving Mission Commander Decision-Making Capabilities By Use Of Heart Rate Zone Feedback In Training Environments, Caitlin M. Oviatt
Perception Vs. Reality: Improving Mission Commander Decision-Making Capabilities By Use Of Heart Rate Zone Feedback In Training Environments, Caitlin M. Oviatt
Theses and Dissertations
In the military environment, it is common for commanders to rely exclusively on perceptional information (e.g., visual observations) to make decisions on their personnel’s physical capabilities. There is little evidence to support the idea that the information provided by physiological feedback technology, typically made available to the individual visually, could improve assessments and decision-making capabilities of outside observers (e.g., mission commander in a remote location). Through experimental examination this research shows that commanders who have Heart Rate Zone (HRZ) biofeedback information about their Airmen by use of physiological technology were able to more accurately predict the level of effort and …
A Condition Based Maintenance Approach To Forecasting B-1 Aircraft Parts, Joshua D. Defrank
A Condition Based Maintenance Approach To Forecasting B-1 Aircraft Parts, Joshua D. Defrank
Theses and Dissertations
United States Air Force (USAF) aircraft parts forecasting techniques have remained archaic despite new advancements in data analysis. This approach resulted in a 57% accuracy rate in fiscal year 2016 for USAF managed items. Those errors combine for $5.5 billion worth of inventory that could have been spent on other critical spare parts. This research effort explores advancements in condition based maintenance (CBM) and its application in the realm of forecasting. It then evaluates the applicability of CBM forecast methods within current USAF data structures. This study found large gaps in data availability that would be necessary in a robust …
Improving Minuteman Iii Maintenance Concepts, Daniel W. Crouch
Improving Minuteman Iii Maintenance Concepts, Daniel W. Crouch
Theses and Dissertations
Since the end of the Cold War, the Air Force has sought out efficiencies across multiple processes to transform into a cost-effective force. However, processes applicable to the Minuteman III (MM III) weapon system have only recently seen efforts to increase effectiveness. The purpose of this research is to investigate whether the use of third generation maintenance concepts could benefit the sustainment of the MM III through its planned retirement around 2030. Primary and secondary sources outlining the history of the strategic missile force and its current state were collected. Themes from each era were analyzed using Prospect Theory as …
Examining Regionalization Efforts To Develop Lessons Learned And Consideration For Department Of Defense Medical Facilities, Erik B. Schuh
Examining Regionalization Efforts To Develop Lessons Learned And Consideration For Department Of Defense Medical Facilities, Erik B. Schuh
Theses and Dissertations
The increase in competition locally and globally has forced companies to become more efficient. One way for companies to gain efficiency is by regionalizing their facilities by either consolidating or collocating to a particular location. A comprehensive literature review addressed the advantages and disadvantages organizations have used in the past when regionalizing. This insight was used on a case study looking at military hospitals in the National Capital Region. The case study was used to find potential cost savings for three surgical procedures by consolidating each procedure to the lowest cost hospital. Future years were then forecasted to find cost …
Implication Of Additive Manufacturing On United States Air Force Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron Supply Chain, Shane R. Veitenheimer
Implication Of Additive Manufacturing On United States Air Force Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron Supply Chain, Shane R. Veitenheimer
Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing is mandated as a technology for the Department of Defense to consider to implement. Previous efforts have shown positive potential for additive manufacturing (AM) for United States Air Force Civil Engineering but do not explore the economic impact. This research examines implementation by investigating a specific Explosive Ordnance Disposal repair part supply chain in the current combat theater of operations. A framework to capture the basic financial savings AM could realize was developed to aid AM decision making. This research established a Scenario Planning and Monte Carlo simulation based framework to produce an estimated annual cost for a …

Analysis Of Factors Related To Turnover Intentions Within The Financial Management (65fx/65wx) Career Field, Virginia L. Galbraith
Theses and Dissertations
There is currently a shortage of field grade officers within the United States Air Force’s Financial Management and Cost Analysis (65Fx/65Wx) career field. A questionnaire was distributed to all officers within the career field (N = 618) in order to identify the values and career intentions of the career field’s current officer workforce. Constructs such as organizational commitment, burnout, and perceived availability of civilian job opportunities were analyzed to determine their impacts on an officer’s turnover intentions. Demographics such as commissioning source, current job type, current job location, and time in service were also analyzed to see how they may …
