Theses

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is considered a youthful country where national youth prefer to work in the already saturated government sector and avoid the private sector. In recent times, growing levels of young unemployed people have been observed. This study investigates UAE national youth intentions to become entrepreneurs by examining the factors that affect entrepreneurial career choice. This quantitative research employs the theoretical model of Ajzen's (1991) Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The most recent version of the standardized measure of "Entrepreneurial Intention Questionnaire (EIQ)" has been used in the UAE context for the first time. UAE national senior …

Comparative Content Analysis Regarding Brand Management Through Influencer Marketing, Julia Hurt

Masters Essays

The divide between advertising, marketing, and public relations has deteriorated over time, where each has a specific focus but no longer a particular correct way of reaching audiences. With the ever-growing presence of online social influencers, a new marketing practice known as influencer marketing has evolved, where brands connect with consumers in an authentic and meaningful way. Influencer marketing is a form of marketing that identifies and targets individuals through the influence of bloggers and their active voice. Research indicates how influence plays a role through social media to reach consumers. However, there is a gap in research when it …

The Equity-Financing Channel, The Catering Channel, And Corporate Investment: International Evidence, Yuanto Kusnadi, K.C. John Wei

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine how stock market mispricing affectscorporate investment in an international setting. We find that investment ismore sensitive to stock prices for equity-dependent firms than for non-equity-dependentfirms in our international sample. Investment is also more sensitive to stockprices for firms located in countries with more developed capital markets (i.e.,lower costs of raising capital), higher share turnover (i.e., shortershareholder horizons), and higher R&D intensity (i.e., more opaque assets). More importantly, the positive relation between equitydependence and the sensitivity of investment to stock prices is more pronouncedfor firms located in these same countries. These findings are consistent withthe equity-financing hypothesis and the …

Work Engagement Antecedents And Consequences Across Generations In The United Arab Emirates, Nahla Abdullah Al Haj Hassan M. Fadhlani

Theses

Drawing upon generational differences and work engagement literatures, this research examines the antecedents and consequences of work engagement in the context of the UAE, and the moderating effect of generational membership.

Statistics predicted that in the year 2015, 45% of the UAE labor market was comprised by individuals born between 1980 and 1999, known as the Y Generation. However, little is known about generational differences in the UAE, in particular among members of the Y Generation with respect to work engagement. Whereas organizations need suitable human resources practices and tools to ensure the consistency and growth of the three generations …

A Note On K-Price Auctions With Complete Information When Mixed Strategies Are Allowed, Timothy Mathews, Jesse A. Schwartz Apr 2017

A Note On K-Price Auctions With Complete Information When Mixed Strategies Are Allowed, Timothy Mathews, Jesse A. Schwartz

Faculty Articles

Restricting attention to players who use pure strategies, Tauman (2002) proves that in a k-price auction (k> 3) for every Nash equilibrium in which no player uses a weakly dominated strategy: (i) the bidder with the highest value wins the auction and (ii) pays a price higher than the second-highest value among the players, thereby generating more revenue for the seller than would occur in a first- or second-price auction. We show that these results do not necessarily hold when mixed strategies are allowed. In particular, we construct an equilibrium for k > 4 in which the second-highest valued …

The Subprime Mortgage Collapse And Its Effects On The Economy, Joseph Krmpotich Apr 2017

The Subprime Mortgage Collapse And Its Effects On The Economy, Joseph Krmpotich

Senior Honors Theses

The subprime mortgage crisis occurred due to a number of factors. Included in these factors were the issuance of subprime loans, the securitization of mortgages in the investment banking system, and the deregulation and ultimate failure of the shadow banking system. These causes were evident in both historical trends in the stock market as well as the macroeconomic data leading into the crash. They were perpetuated by investors, mortgage brokers, and banks taking on an abnormal amount of risk in the early 2000s for both psychological and behavioral reasons. These causes, while less than obvious at the time, have, with …

Taxation Of Income On Professional Team Athletes, Crystal M. Williamson Apr 2017

Taxation Of Income On Professional Team Athletes, Crystal M. Williamson

Senior Honors Theses

Taxation of income for the average person can be a daunting task. However, for professional athletes, this task becomes even more tedious. Professional athletes face the jock tax. This means that athletes have to pay taxes in every state in which they play a game, practice, and perform a service that is part of their contract. Professional athletes, like every United States (U.S.) citizen, are required to pay both federal and state income taxes. Since professional athletes are constantly traveling, their state of residence becomes even more important when allocating their income to the respective state. Many question the constitutionality …

Utah County Housing Trends From 2000-2016: A Quantitative Research Analysis, James C. Brau, Jeremy R. Endicott, Barrett A. Slade, David N. Wilson

Faculty Publications

We examine the Utah County housing market using a sample of over 70,000 single-family residential transactions from 2000 through 2016. To measure the strength of the Utah County residential market, we examine selling price, transaction volume, and number of days the house is on the market. We compare housing prices using two models: a naïve model that calculates the average transaction price over a period, and a hedonic pricing model that gives a detailed, holistic view of how homes are priced. The latter incorporates characteristics of homes not priced in the naïve model. Characteristics include total square feet above and …

The AQR provides consumers and aviation industry professionals a means to compare performance quality among U.S. airlines using objective, performancebased data. No other airline study in the country is based on performance measures. The APS was added as a …

High-Low Pricing (Hl) Vs. Every Day Low Pricing (Edlp) Strategy: The Consequence Of Jc Penney’S Move From Hl To Edlp, Abhay Shah

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Retailers follow one of two pricing strategies – high-low (HL) and every-day low pricing (EDLP). The HL strategy is where the retailer will start with a higher price and give deep discounts in order to attract customers. On the other hand, retailers that follow the EDLP strategy keep prices very low and rarely giving price discounts. Not too long ago, JC Penney changed its strategy from HL to EDLP that had a very negative impact on its performance. The study hypothesizes that retailers who change their strategy (from HL to EDLP or EDLP to HL) will not be successful if …

Launched in March of 1957, The Standard and Poor’s 500 Index (The S&P 500) was the first index to be published daily. Starting with an indicator in 1923 for 233 companies, and then growing to 416 in 1941, today it is used as a common benchmark for the health of the U.S. stock market with 500 companies. These 500 companies offer some of the largest stocks (claims of ownership in public American companies) in the United States although it is not the only index to gauge the health of the economy. In 2012, Standard & Poor’s combined its index operations …
