In this paper, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) farm animal protection work over the preceding decade is described from the perspective of the organization. Prior to 2002, there were few legal protections for animals on the farm, and in 2005, a new campaign at the HSUS began to advance state ballot initiatives throughout the country, with a decisive advancement in California (Proposition 2) that paved the way for further progress. This study examines the changes in player compensation in Major League Baseball during the last three decades. Specifically, we examine the extent to which recently documented changes in players’ compensation structure based on certain types of productivity fits in with the longer term trends in compensation, and identify the value of specific output activities in different time periods. We examine free agent contracts in three-year periods across three decades and find changes to which players’ performance measures are significantly rewarded in free agency. We find evidence that the compensation strategies of baseball teams increased the rewards to “power” statistics like …

Using data from experimental trials conducted with Angus, Brahman, and their reciprocal cross, this project analyzes the profitability of grazing endophyte infected tall Fescue (L. Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) vs. Bermuda grass (L. Cynodon dactylon) pasture. This study examines the relationship between financial development in a particular country and the volatility and illiquidity of ADR’s cross-listed on American exchanges, that correspond to the particular home country. Tests show that financial development and illiquidity are inversely related, thus, financial development improves liquidity and reduces volatility. The results have important implications for individual investors, firms seeking to lower their cost of capital, and the economic well-being of countries in general.

Applying methods of textual and stylometric analysis to all 119,225 speeches made in the Canadian House of Commons between 2006 and 2011, we establish that air pollution reduces the speech quality of Canadian Members of Parliament (MPs). Exposure to fine particulate matter concentrations exceeding 15 μg/m3 causes a 3.1 percent reduction in the quality of MPs speech (equivalent to a 3.6 months of education). For more difficult communication tasks the decrement in quality is equivalent to the loss of 6.5 months of schooling. Using mergers and acquisitions (M&As) from 26 countries between 2000 and 2012, I examine the role of foreign and domestic institutional investors in cross-border M&As. I have several findings. First, both foreign and domestic institutional ownerships increase significantly during the period 2000-2012.Meanwhile, the volume of the cross-border M&As does not increase during the same time period. Second, domestic institutional investors facilitate both domestic and cross-border M&As. However, this seems to be inconsistent with the negative impact of domestic institutional ownership on the intensity of cross-border M&A activity, as reported in Ferreira et al. (2010). In the first essay, “Does Credit risk explain market’s participants ‘cognitive biases - Evidence from Anchoring Bias in Analysts’ Earnings Forecasts”, using anchoring bias in analysts’ earnings forecasts, I examine the relation between credit risk and market participants’ cognitive biases. Recent findings indicate that analysts suffer from anchoring bias as they anchor their earnings per share (EPS) forecasts on the industry median without making sufficient adjustment. I show that the profitability of anchoring bias based trading strategies concentrates in the worst-rated stocks, especially around credit rating downgrades, suggesting that analysts exhibit stronger cognitive …

This study examines the relationship between chief executive officer (CEO) narcissism and the firm’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy, the relationship between CEO prior CSR experiences and the focal firm’s CSR, the relationship between board prior CSR experiences and the focal firm’s CSR, and the relationship between CEO narcissism and corporate social responsibility decomposed into two main categories: internal CSR and external CSR. The study uses a sample of 295 fortune firm-CEO to test the hypothesized relationships. In an investigation of (non-international) undergraduate students’ experiences with their engineering major, we interviewed 10 young women asking questions about their interactions with instructors, academic successes/struggles, and any challenges they felt they had faced as women/girls in engineering. Initial findings echoed those in previous research serving to affirm held notions of interventions that would improve women/girls’ experiences in engineering. In reflecting on the research methods and troubling its design, we realized that we had approached the data with limited perspectives.
