Emotional Labor And Discretionary Behaviors: Exploring The Mediating And Moderating Effects Of Felt Inauthenticity And Emotional Exhaustion, Yang Ting Ang Jun 2017

Emotional Labor And Discretionary Behaviors: Exploring The Mediating And Moderating Effects Of Felt Inauthenticity And Emotional Exhaustion, Yang Ting Ang

Dissertations and Theses Collection

The service industry is a growing sector in most countries and emotional labor is a major component of service employees’ jobs. As such, it is important to understand how emotional labor influences employee discretionary behaviors such as counter-productive workplace behaviors (CWBs) and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs), both of which affect the well-being of employees and organizations. This dissertation presents two studies that examined the mechanisms underlying, and boundary conditions surrounding, emotional labor and employee discretionary behaviors. Drawing on theories and research regarding ego depletion, inauthenticity, and behavior consistency, this paper proposed a theoretical model that hypothesized how two potential mechanisms …

Economic, Policy uncertainty under political opaqueness imposes great impact in the capital market. I construct ex ante cross-section of firm sensitivity to China Economic Policy Uncertainty (CEPU) index from Baker, Bloom and Davis (2013). This measure of policy sensitivity is significantly negatively predictive of a firm’s market value and Tobin’s Q. Cross sectional tests show that the negative effects are stronger in SOEs= for firms with higher agency problems, and for firms operating in market with lower degree of competition or market disciplining. The evidence suggests that high level of policy influence causes significant value destruction in the capital market.

The Differential Identity Activation & Integration Mechanism (Diaim): A Model Linking Female Businesspersons’ Identity Integration And Identity Activation To Negotiation, Yi Wen Tan Jun 2017

The Differential Identity Activation & Integration Mechanism (Diaim): A Model Linking Female Businesspersons’ Identity Integration And Identity Activation To Negotiation, Yi Wen Tan

Dissertations and Theses Collection

Women play an important role in business management (female businesspersons) but yet they face constraints in the workplace, such as in negotiations. As female businesspersons seem to be facing seemingly conflicting gender and business identities, the level of the integration between these identities, as captured by the construct gender-professional identity integration (G-PII), can be a critical factor that influences female businesspersons in negotiations. It is expected that the level of G-PII influences female businesspersons’ negotiation behaviors when their different identities (i.e., female identity, business identity or dual identities) are activated. Hence, a DIAIM model that depicts how female businesspersons with …

Eighteenth Century Women And The Business Of Making Glass Music, Kate M. Hepworth Jun 2017

Eighteenth Century Women And The Business Of Making Glass Music, Kate M. Hepworth

History

During the relatively short period from the mid-to-late eighteenth century when glass musical instruments were manufactured and gained popularity, several women made names for themselves in the realm of avant-garde musical performance. The lives of three female glass instrument players: Anne Ford, Marianne Davies, and Marianne Kirchgassner, show how these successful performer-entrepreneurs operated in an age of emerging feminine public identity. Their journeys reveal much about the gender dimensions of the age, the role of music in the modern era, the consumption of it, and their approach to business. The financial opportunities presented to women looking to challenge the limitations …

Beyond Lobbying Expenditures: How Lobbying Breadth And Political Connectedness Affect Firm Outcomes, Jason W. Ridge, Amy E. Ingram,, Aaron D. Hill Jun 2017

Beyond Lobbying Expenditures: How Lobbying Breadth And Political Connectedness Affect Firm Outcomes, Jason W. Ridge, Amy E. Ingram,, Aaron D. Hill

Publications

The extant lobbying literature largely focuses on the effects of firm aggregate lobbying expenditures, suggesting that more lobbying expenditures fuel positive firm benefits. We argue the focus on aggregate expenditures overlooks how expenditures are targeted and the influence of those targeting the expenditures; as such, exploring such factors will both add insight to our understanding of the theoretical mechanisms underlying lobbying and clarify contradictory findings. Specifically, we argue a successful lobbying strategy consists of both the breadth of government targeted and the political connectedness of the firm. Empirical results support our contentions that lobbying breadth and political connectedness affect the …

(Meta-)Framing Strategic Entrepreneurship, Zeki Simsek, Ciaran Heavey, Brian Curtis Fox Jun 2017

(Meta-)Framing Strategic Entrepreneurship, Zeki Simsek, Ciaran Heavey, Brian Curtis Fox

Publications

In this essay, we seek to focus scholarly discourse on the conceptual identity, boundaries, and precision of strategic entrepreneurship as an organizational construct. To give a “face” to a construct, lines must be drawn, marking off what it encompasses and what it does not. We, thus, first frame and assess prior conceptualizations from a construct clarity perspective. Our intent here is not to exhaustively catalogue all the varied conceptualizations available, but rather to map in lieu of burrow the content domain of strategic entrepreneurship as a theoretical construct, illuminate points of convergence and divergence, and reveal potential blind spots and …

The Price Revolution In The Ottoman Context: Economic Upheaval In The Sixteenth Century, Dylan Lawrence Russell Jun 2017

The Price Revolution In The Ottoman Context: Economic Upheaval In The Sixteenth Century, Dylan Lawrence Russell

Middle Eastern Communities and Migrations Student Research Paper Series

The inflationary pressures of the Price Revolution had an impact on Ottoman agricultural organization, state finances, industry, and the growth of corruption. This analysis will examine the causes, effects, and scope of inflation in the sixteenth century. Inflation alone did not cause these drastic changes, as other very significant developments also contributed to the turbulent economic environment. However inflation did, in fact, influence many basic transformations, including shifts in wealth, power, and the enrichment of specific social classes at the expense of others.

Global Management Skills And Attributes For International Business, Aye Mya Mya Kyaw, Paul Harland, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba

HCBE Faculty Articles

With the continuing growth of globalization, companies need to pay particular attention when selecting, and subsequently managing those who may become their “Global Managers”. The need for developing a cadre of global managers, who are capable of working in key international positions wherever the companies require them, has been on the rise but widely debated and documented. The most advantageous way to achieve this is by coming up with a clear and concise concept as to what constitutes such a manager. Therefore, using a qualitative methodology with 13 global managers, this study provides an examination of a wide set of …

Ceo Wealth Sensitivity And Corporate Social Responsibility, Atif Ikram, Zhichuan (Frank) Li, Travis Macdonald Jun 2017

Ceo Wealth Sensitivity And Corporate Social Responsibility, Atif Ikram, Zhichuan (Frank) Li, Travis Macdonald

Business Publications

We use CEO wealth sensitivity to stock performance (delta) and stock volatility (vega) to provide empirical evidence that CEO compensation structure influences firm Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) ratings. We find that delta has no significant effect on CSR rating, while vega has a strong, causal relationship with CSR. These results suggest that because CEOs view CSR as a way of increasing firm risk rather than improving firm value, they increase their own compensation through vega.

Testing Validity Of Observed Indicators Of Local Content Policy In Nigeria: Evidence From Four-Factor Measurement Model, Abdulkabir N. Adedeji, Muhammad O. Lawan, Shaufiq F. Sidique Jun 2017

Testing Validity Of Observed Indicators Of Local Content Policy In Nigeria: Evidence From Four-Factor Measurement Model, Abdulkabir N. Adedeji, Muhammad O. Lawan, Shaufiq F. Sidique

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper tests validity property of the indicators that measured local content policy (LCP) in Nigeria’s oil sector. Survey data were obtained for the test, using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) method. The results obtained from a four-factor measurement model confirmed the LCP indicators to be valid. This reflects that the policy can achieve its developmental targets on local value creation with particular reference to increased local firms’ participation, backward linkages, and job creation in Nigeria’s oil sector. Hence, government should focus on effective implementation and compliance of the policy rather than “labour clause” as contained in the local content Act. …

The Impact Of Trade On Economic Growth In Ecowas Countries: Evidence From Panel Data, Milton Iyoha, Ajan Okim Jun 2017

The Impact Of Trade On Economic Growth In Ecowas Countries: Evidence From Panel Data, Milton Iyoha, Ajan Okim

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The poor economic performance and growth of ECOWAS economies have become so challenging and this has necessitated research and discussions. Experts have argued that the relationship between trade and economic growth in the ECOWAS region is unclear and the question of whether trade promotes growth and development is controversial. In this paper, an attempt is made to analyse the impact of trade on economic growth both from a theoretical perspective and using econometric evidence from ECOWAS countries. In particular, an attempt is made to econometrically test the hypothesis of a positive relationship between trade and growth in ECOWAS countries during …

An Application Of Asymmetric Garch Models On Volatility Of Banks Equity In Nigeria’S Stock Market, Omorogbe J. Asemota, Uchenna C. Ekejiuba Jun 2017

An Application Of Asymmetric Garch Models On Volatility Of Banks Equity In Nigeria’S Stock Market, Omorogbe J. Asemota, Uchenna C. Ekejiuba

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper examines the volatility of banks equity weekly returns for six banks (coded B1 to B6) using GARCH models. Results reveal the presence of ARCH effect in B2 and B3 equity returns. In addition, the estimated models could not find evidence of leverage effect. On evaluating the estimated models using standard criteria, EGARCH (1, 1) and CGARCH (1, 1) model in Student’s t-distribution are adjudged the best volatility models for B2 and B3 respectively. The study recommends that in modelling stock market volatility, variants of GARCH models and alternative error distribution should be considered for robustness of results. We …

Modelling Inflation Rate Volatility In Nigeria With Structural Breaks, Ismail O. Fasanya, Oluwasegun B. Adekoya Jun 2017

Modelling Inflation Rate Volatility In Nigeria With Structural Breaks, Ismail O. Fasanya, Oluwasegun B. Adekoya

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study compares the performance of GARCH-Type models in modelling inflation volatility in Nigeria covering the period 1995M01 to 2016M10. In the paper, we provide two main innovations: (i) we analyze inflation rate of two pronounced consumer prices indices namely headline and core consumer price indices using the Augmented DickeyFuller break point test which allow for structural breaks in the data series; and (ii) the method is modified to include both symmetric and asymmetric volatility models. The empirical examination observes evidence of volatility persistence in the consumer price indices, but only headline is consistent with leverage effects. Thus, applying one-modelfits-all …

Agricultural Sector Credit And Output Relationship In Nigeria: Evidence From Nonlinear Ardl1, Oloronsola E. Olowofeso, Adeyemi A. Adeboye, Valli T. Adejo, Kufre J. Bassey, Ochoche Abraham

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper investigates the relationship between credit to agriculture and agricultural output in Nigeria by means of nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model using a time series data from 1992Q1 to 2015Q4. Results show no evidence of asymmetry in the impact of credit to output growth in the agricultural sector (positive and negative changes) in the short-run, but different equilibrium relationships exist in the long-run. The dynamic adjustments show that the cumulative agricultural output growth is mostly attracted by the impact of the positive changes in credit to agriculture with a lag of four quarters of the prediction horizon. This …

Exploring The Questionable Academic Practice Of Conference Paper Double Dipping, Krista B. Lewellyn, William Q. Judge, Adam Smith

Management Faculty Publications

We develop a conceptual framework and provide empirical evidence that helps to explain why management scholars submit the same paper to more than one scholarly conference, a practice referred to as "double dipping." Drawing from general strain theory,we find that certain features of the social and national institutional context in which these scholars are embedded provides motivation for and facilitates rationalization of engagement in the double-dipping practice. Specifically, our results show that the incidence of conference paper double dipping is greater for junior scholars and for those currently affiliated with research-intensive universities. We also find that authors who received their …
