Decomposing Time Effect On Valuation And Choice, Yan Meng
Decomposing Time Effect On Valuation And Choice, Yan Meng
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Intertemporal choice, defined as tradeoffs consumers make between the costs of waiting and the benefits of larger reward size, is an important and ubiquitous effect in marketing. Individuals’ perception of time has been shown to impact intertemporal choice. Event markers are demarcations that cut time duration into intervals and make time discrete rather than continuous. Event markers impact individuals’ decision making, such that a large number of event markers make individuals perceive the future to be far away. Therefore, when faced with an intertemporal choice, they take a Small-Sooner (SS) reward rather than waiting for a Large-Later (LL) reward. The …

Mapping How Culture In New York City And London Influences Respectively The Iconic Fashion Brands Of Kors And Mcqueen: A Case Study, Carol Brathwaite
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis is an explanatory case study that applies geographic information systems (GIS) data, biographical data, and other secondary data. It includes mainly qualitative data collection and analysis; furthermore, the study examines quantitative data on the cultural events offered within each city. Overall, this case study adopts a theoretical perspective. The two individual cases (based on a multiple, holistic case-study design framework) of fashion culture in New York City and London, as per Michael Kors and Alexander McQueen respectively, represent ‘confirmatory cases or presumed replications of the same phenomenon’ (Yin 2014:59). Each describes the house’s fashion aesthetics as well as …
Surplus Consumption, Habit Utility And Moody Investors, Jun Lou
Surplus Consumption, Habit Utility And Moody Investors, Jun Lou
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The thesis examines a blend of Asset Pricing topics: joint stock-bond pricing, consumption-based asset pricing puzzles, time variation in risk preference, among others. In chapter one, I first review the literature on respective topics in search of a consolidated framework of resolution. I then propose one, a consumption-based affine model that jointly prices bond and stock in closed form. The tractable feature of the price solutions remains standard as in affine termstructure of interest rates, but presents novelty for the stock prices. In chapter two, I discuss the GMM based procedures for model estimation. In chapter three, I interpret the …
The Politics Of Shorter Hours And Corporate-Centered Society: A History Of Work-Time Regulation In The United States And Japan, Keisuke Jinno
The Politics Of Shorter Hours And Corporate-Centered Society: A History Of Work-Time Regulation In The United States And Japan, Keisuke Jinno
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Shorter working hours drew much attention as a means of fighting unemployment and crisis in capitalism during the first half of the twentieth century. Nowadays, shorter work-time is rarely considered a policy option to fix economic or social issues in the United States and Japan. This dissertation presents a history of work-time regulation in the United States and Japan to examine how and why its developments and stalemate took place.
In the big picture, developments of work-time regulation during the first half of the twentieth century were a part of concessional modifications of class relations, a common phenomenon in many …
Essays On Capital Structure And Institutional Ownership, Yuan Feng
Essays On Capital Structure And Institutional Ownership, Yuan Feng
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation consists of three chapters about how institutional ownership and trading affect capital structure.
Chapter 1
The literature documents that firms issue equity following periods of high stock return and such behavior only occurs in concert with high returns that coincide with large amounts of buying by new institutions. My findings suggest this is also associated with strong institutional selling, the opposite of what one would expect. This positive relationship is not driven by outflow-motivated selling, but rather by informed selling by short-term institutions.
Chapter 2
I document a strong negative relationship between institutional ownership and leverage. I find …

Computational Social Science (CSS) has become a mainstream approach in the empirical study of policy analytics issues in various domains of e-commerce research. This article is intended to represent recent advances that have been made for the discovery of new policy-related insights in business, consumer, and social settings. The approach discussed is fusion analytics, which combines machine-based methods from Computer Science (CS) and explanatory empiricism involving advanced Econometrics and Statistics. It explores several efforts to conduct research inquiry in different functional areas of Electronic Commerce and Information Systems (IS), with applications that represent different functional areas of business, as well …
The Qm Evolution: Behavioral Quality Management As A Firm’S Strategic Resource, Young Sik Cho, Joo Y. Jung, Kevin Linderman
The Qm Evolution: Behavioral Quality Management As A Firm’S Strategic Resource, Young Sik Cho, Joo Y. Jung, Kevin Linderman
Management Faculty Publications
Firms implement various quality management (QM) practices to improve process quality. Scholars recognize that QM practices consist of both technical and behavioral oriented practices. The relationship of technical and behavioral oriented practices on performance has led to paradoxical relationships. Improving quality performance necessitates understanding the relationship between technical and behavioral orientated practices. This study empirically examines the relationship between technical and behavioral quality practices by collecting survey data from both US-based (N = 152) and China-based (N = 222) firms. The analysis uses the structural equation modeling technique, and shows that behavioral QM practices fully mediate the relationship between technical …
Developing An Evidence Base For Assessing Natural Capital Risks And Dependencies In Lending To Australian Wheat Farms, Theodor Florian Cojoianu, Francisco Ascui
Developing An Evidence Base For Assessing Natural Capital Risks And Dependencies In Lending To Australian Wheat Farms, Theodor Florian Cojoianu, Francisco Ascui
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Farmers are highly dependent on stocks of natural capital, and lenders are in turn exposed to natural capital through their loans to farmers. However, the traditional process for assessing a farmer’s credit risk relies primarily on historical financial data. Banks’ consideration of environmental factors tends to be limited to major risks such as contaminated land liabilities, and to large project and corporate finance, as opposed to the smaller loans typical of the Australian agricultural sector. The relevant risks and dependencies for agriculture vary by sub-sector and geography, and there is a lack of standardised methodologies and evidence to support risk …
Social Value Creation And Relational Coordination In Public-Private Collaborations, Nigel D. Cadwell, Jens K. Roehrich, Gerard George
Social Value Creation And Relational Coordination In Public-Private Collaborations, Nigel D. Cadwell, Jens K. Roehrich, Gerard George
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Public-private collaborations, or hybrid organizational forms, are often difficult to organize because of disparate goals, incentives, and management practices. Some of this misalignment is addressed structurally or contractually, but not the management processes and practices. In this study, we examine how the coordination of these social and work relationships, or relational coordination, affects task performance and the creation of social value. We employ a dyad perspective on two long-term relationships that are part of a wider ecosystem. We illustrate the social value creation process, identifying mutual knowledge and goal alignment, as necessary to create relational coordination. We find that the …

The Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal has utilised a ‘scope of business’ inquiry to delineate the boundaries of the no-conflict rule for the company director. Such an inquiry is directed at discerning the realistic ability of the company to exploit any particular business opportunity and a strict capacity approach is eschewed, at least where the no-conflict rule is concerned. The decision is premised on a bifurcation between the no-conflict and no-profit rules, suggesting that the tests to determine breach of these fiduciary rules are not necessarily the same, thus permitting a more nuanced consideration of directorial breaches.
The Near Future Of Marketing From The Consulting Perspective, Ronald E. Goldsmith, Luiz Moutinho
The Near Future Of Marketing From The Consulting Perspective, Ronald E. Goldsmith, Luiz Moutinho
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
How we see the future depends partly on our current perspective. A research-oriented visionary will detail what the future brings for researchers. A technology-oriented one describes the wonders of coming technologies. Marketing managers are likely concerned with future developments in their specific areas of responsibility (i.e., advertising and promotion, branding, or supply chain). Academics likely look for the hot new research topics. This article summarizes how several major consulting companies, e.g., McKinsey & Company, Strategy&, and Euromonitor International, view the near future on the premise that academic researchers often overlook such forecasts although they provide a unique perspective on what …

Reasons Why Small, Private Schools Should Start Football Programs, Ania Izabela Rynarzewska, Steven Mcclung
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
College football programs are booming in popularity. College football benefits both fans and schools. Those benefits differ between small and large schools. This paper looked at reasons why small, private schools should start football program, Findings suggest a positive effect of fan identity, expectation of enjoyment and perceived importance of football to the school on intention to attend games and consume football related goods. Relationship between intentions to donate and enjoyment and importance were partially mediated by intentions to consume. Fan identity had no direct effect on intentions to donate. This study suggests that small-scale football programs can benefit students …
Family Influence, Advertising, And R&D: Implications For Firm Performance, Atanas N. Nikolov
Family Influence, Advertising, And R&D: Implications For Firm Performance, Atanas N. Nikolov
Journal of Global Business Insights
The literature on family firm performance has failed to conclusively link the impact of family influence on the financial market performance of public firms. The goal of this research is to address this gap by considering mechanisms through which founding family influence contributes to superior firm performance relative to non-family firms. This study links family influence in publicly-traded firms with firm performance in terms of both accounting (Return on Assets) and financial market (Buy-and-Hold-Abnormal-Returns) metrics. The findings support the argument that increased advertising and R&D focus in family influenced firms reflects a long-term oriented management strategy, consistent with decreased agency …
Outdoor Enthusiasts’ Perspectives On Livestock Animal Treatment, Elizabeth S. Byrd, Nicole Olynk J. Widmar
Outdoor Enthusiasts’ Perspectives On Livestock Animal Treatment, Elizabeth S. Byrd, Nicole Olynk J. Widmar
Journal of Global Business Insights
Demand for pork chops and chicken breasts were analyzed using best-worst scaling and consumer choice experiments. Outdoor enthusiasts (who regularly hunt, fish, or participate in outdoor activities), which represent a unique consumer group with respect to livestock animal welfare, were surveyed with respect to meat purchasing attributes. Six meat attributes were analyzed for relative levels of preferences with safety having the largest share. Nutrition and taste were more important to outdoor enthusiasts than a representative sample of U.S. residents. Positive and significant mean willingness to pay estimates were obtained with the exception of locally produced pork chops. Outdoor enthusiasts were …

Southwest Airlines’ Successful Economistic, Cost-Leadership Strategy Examined In Light Of Paul Lawrence’S Renewed Darwinian Theory: An Analysis, Nadya Chishty-Mujahid
Journal of Global Business Insights
This paper examines the successful business strategy employed by Southwest Airlines with special respect to the recent theories of Paul Lawrence. Long-time professor of organizational behavior at Harvard Business School, Lawrence posited that Renewed Darwinian theory reflected four basic human drives: acquisition, defense, comprehension, and bonding. Given Michael Porter’s assessment of the distinctions between cost leadership and differentiation, my analysis reveals that Southwest succeeded in maintaining its competitive market niche for the air-travel industry by engaging in a strongly economistic, cost leadership strategy that primarily incorporated and prioritized aspects of the drives to acquire and defend. In doing so …

All Works
© 2016 Elsevier B.V. Big data generated across social media sites have created numerous opportunities for bringing more insights to decision-makers. Few studies on big data analytics, however, have demonstrated the support for strategic decision-making. Moreover, a formal method for analysing social media-generated big data for decision support is yet to be developed, particularly in the tourism sector. Using a design science research approach, this study aims to design and evaluate a ‘big data analytics’ method to support strategic decision-making in tourism destination management. Using geotagged photos uploaded by tourists to the photo-sharing social media site, Flickr, the applicability of …

Optimizing (S, S) Policies For Multi-Period Inventory Models With Demand Distribution Uncertainty: Robust Dynamic Programming Approaches, Ruozhen Qiu, Minghe Sun, Yun Fong Lim
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We consider a finite-horizon single-product periodic-review inventory managementproblem with demand distribution uncertainty. We formulate the problemas a dynamic program and prove the existence of an optimal (s, S) policy. Thecorresponding dynamic robust counterpart models are then developed for thebox and the ellipsoid uncertainty sets. These counterpart models are transformedinto tractable linear and second-order cone programs, respectively. Weillustrate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed robust optimizationapproaches through a numerical study.
Assessing Personality-Situation Interplay In Personnel Selection: Toward More Integration Into Personality Research, Filip Lievens
Assessing Personality-Situation Interplay In Personnel Selection: Toward More Integration Into Personality Research, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Over the years, the personnel selection field has developed methods to assess trait expression in particular situations, but these approaches have evolved mostly outside the field of personality psychology. In this article, I review available personnel selection evidence regarding two such approaches: (i) situational judgement tests that present short scenarios and ask job candidates how they would handle the situations and (ii) assessment centre exercises requiring candidates to display behaviour in specified interactive situations. I describe these approaches and discuss their relations with personality research. I posit that adapting these approaches to personality research creates methodological diversity to address key …

Integrating Situational Judgment Tests And Assessment Centre Exercises Into Personality Research: Challenges And Further Opportunities, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this rejoinder, I discuss several broad themes that emerged from the 32 commentaries in response to my target article about the value of integrating Situational Judgment Tests and Assessment Centre exercises for advancing research on the personality-situation interplay. Specifically, I summarize the various challenges put forward (e.g. deficient/contaminated trait measurement, assessment of situation construal, inclusion of personality-driven situation experience) and offer potential conceptual (e.g. use of situational taxonomies and contextualized personality perception) and methodological solutions (e.g. use of open-ended and nonlinear SJTs and multiple speed assessment). Taken together, this fits into a more comprehensive multi-method approach to personality assessment.

The Impact Of Csr On Corporate Financial Performance, David K. Ding
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We provide one of the first analyses of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and firm performance using only annual financial reports. We document a link between corporate financial performance (CFP) and CSR, although this is not always positive. Specifically, we investigate whether CSR performance can be implied from financial reporting and provide evidence that CSR information implied by financial reports have a significant association with CFP. Furthermore, we provide the first comprehensive study of CSR reporting and link it with CFP in New Zealand.

The Effects Of Risk Management On Management Forecast Behavior, John L. Campbell, Sean Cao, Hye Sun Chang, Raluca Chiorean
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Prior research examines several reasons why managers voluntarily disclose information, but provides relatively little evidence as to whether day-to-day operational decisions influence a manager’s disclosure choice. In this study, we examine whether a particular operational activity – risk management through the use of derivatives – affects whether a manager decides to issue earnings forecasts. Using a large hand-collected sample of derivatives users and non-users, we find that derivatives users are more likely to issue earnings forecasts relative to non-users. We then find that this result is stronger when the use of derivatives makes it less costly for managers to issue …

Gender And Connections Among Wall Street Analysts, Lily Hua Fang, Sterling Huang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We examine how alumni ties with corporate boards differentially affect male and female analysts’ job performance and career outcomes. Connection improves men’s job performance — forecasting accuracy and recommendation impact — significantly more than women’s. Controlling for performance, connection further contributes to men’s, but not women’s, likelihood of being voted by institutional investors as “star” analysts, a marker of career success. These asymmetric effects are stronger in more opaque firms and among younger analysts, but is absent from a placebo test. Our evidence indicates that men reap higher benefits from social networks than women in both job performance and subjective …
Comparative Price And The Design Of Effective Product Communications, Thomas Allard, Dale Griffin
Comparative Price And The Design Of Effective Product Communications, Thomas Allard, Dale Griffin
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The authors propose amodel relating a product's comparative price to the construal level of its associated communications and show how perceived expensiveness shapes consumers' response to the wording of marketing communications. A series of six studies shows that for both absolute low-and high-cost product categories, comparatively expensive (inexpensive) products are preferred when accompanied by high-construal (low-construal) messages, due to the conceptual fluency of the "match" between price-induced psychological distance and construal level. The model provides novel implications for designing effective marketing communications: comparatively expensive versions of objectively low-priced products (e.g., an expensive chocolate truffle) are best promoted through more abstract …

Scholarly research generally finds that democratic governments are more likely to respect human rights than other types of regimes. Different human rights practices among long-standing and affluent democracies therefore present a puzzle. Drawing from democratic theory and comparative institutional studies, we argue more inclusive or "popular" democracies should enforce human rights better than more exclusive or "elite" democracies, even in the face of security threats from armed conflict. Instead of relying on the Freedom House or Polity indexes to distinguish levels of democracy, we adopt a more focused approach to measuring structures of inclusion, the Institutional Democracy Index (IDI), which …

Firm-Specific Knowledge Assets And Employment Arrangements: Evidence From Ceo Compensation Design And Ceo Dismissal, Heli Wang, Shan Zhao, Guoli Chen
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Research Summary: We argue that firms with greater specificity in knowledge structure need to both encourage their CEOs to stay so that they make investments with a long-term perspective, and provide job securities to the CEOs so that they are less concerned about the risk of being dismissed. Accordingly, we found empirical evidence that specificity in firm knowledge assets is positively associated with the use of restricted stocks in CEO compensation design (indicating the effort of CEO retention) and negatively associated with CEO dismissal (indicating the job securities the firm committed to CEOs). Furthermore, firm diversification was found to mitigate …
