A Qualitative And Quantitative Assessment Of Readiness For Organizational Change Literature, Andrew B. Burris

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to take a step in integrating the change literature and accumulate the empirical results using meta-analytic techniques. First, a literature review of existing research on organizational change was conducted. Second, existing models of organizational change were integrated to create a theoretical structure. Third, a meta-analysis was performed to derive the corrected correlation values for each relationship in that structure. Finally, the readiness for change literature was qualitatively assessed. In addition, a quantitative review was done by accumulating the results across 25 studies in an effort to provide a current quantitative assessment of change management …

Institutional repositories can create exciting possibilities for scholarly communication with access, discovery, and permanency for the intellectual capital of a university. Digital research repositories capture student and faculty research and allow publishing opportunities for electronic journals in an open access environment. Western Kentucky University launched TopSCHOLARtm in May 2007 and is reaping benefits from the decision to contract with an established publishing platform, bepress' Digital Commons.

Can Monetary Policy Help To Stabilise Asset Prices?, Knowledge@Smu

Should central banks use monetary policy to stabilise asset prices, particularly home and equity prices? Stefan Gerlach, professor of monetary economics, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt, points out that no central bank has had lowering home prices as one of its policy goals. Gerlach spoke recently at an Economics and Statistics Seminar at the Singapore Management University on how residential property and equity prices, inflation and economic activity responded to monetary policy shocks in 17 countries from 1986 to 2006.

Since January 2005, according to the Piracy Rights Clearinghouse, in the US alone there have been data security breaches involving over 218 million records containing sensitive personal information. People whose personal records are compromised are at risk for identity theft and financial fraud. Singapore Management University’s School of Information Systems (SIS) is spearheading research on state-of-the-art technologies and solutions to secure IT infrastructure, protect confidential information for businesses and individuals, and build trust among all parties.

With an increased emphasis on the topic of ethics in business, more attention has been focused on the college campus and how students are introduced to ethical issues. The question often asked is how ethics is being taught in business school classrooms and whether students are receptive to these messages. Are faculty members considered ‘‘more ethical’’ and, therefore, able to teach students to be ethical citizens? Alternatively, is it the experience and broad knowledge rather than the individual’s behavior that qualifies a professor? Discerning Leadership Perceptions Of Central Eurasian Managers: An Exploratory Analysis, Kiran M. Ismail, David L. Ford Jr.

This exploratory study examined the responses of Central Eurasian corporate, government, and non-governmental organization managers regarding their perceptions of work-related values of effective organizational leadership. The respondents were participants in a 2-week leadership development program held in Istanbul, Turkey. Two inter-related research questions regarding leadership concepts and challenges were explored through content analysis of program intake interview protocols. The participants’ pre-program perspectives on what constituted effective organizational leadership were found to be consistent with the GLOBE Project’s culturally endorsed leadership dimensions. First there was the military regime's crackdown on the 'saffron revolution' in September last year. Then last month Cyclone Nargis struck, leaving millions suffering without shelter and food. What do the next sixty years hold for Myanmar? Tobias Rettig, political science professor at the Singapore Management University, sees a largely bleak future tinged with a faint glimmer of hope.

Across geographical regions and academic disciplines, faculty members are lamenting the rise in behavior problems in the classroom. We present here a review of the literature on classroom incivility and a categorization of uncivil behaviors. Next, attributing classroom incivility, in part, to cultural characteristics of our current undergraduates, we compare Millennials to earlier generations and discuss the impact of specific cultural characteristics on their classroom behavior. Then, using transactional and transformational leadership theories to frame our recommendations, we combine insights from research on Millennial culture to offer pedagogical methods for helping to prevent incivility, as well as how to respond …

Commitment To Corporate, Social, And Environmental Responsibilities: An Insight Into Contrasting Perspectives In China And The Us, Carlos Wh. Lo, Carolyn P. Egri, David A. Ralston

This cross-national study investigates antecedents and outcomes of corporate responsibility (CR) practices to stakeholders and the natural environment in the contrasting contexts of China and the US. In general, we found partial support for the proposition that the divergence of CR stakeholder practices across nations is dependent on the institutional environments of business. Whereas customer and community stakeholder practices were found to be more prevalent in US companies, there were no significant country differences in the prevalence of employee, investor, and environmental CR practices. We find ourselves in a period of sustained economic uncertainty. Today, like 6 months ago, the U.S. economy is on the brink of a recession. Weakness in lending activity, coupled with weakness in the housing sector and related manufacturing industries has stymied economic growth since late 2007. At times, recession seems imminent. But, the official measures, such as quarterly gross domestic product, do not clearly signal that the economy is contracting. Further, prices are rising rapidly for food and energy. In a recently released Coordinated Issue Paper (LMSB-04-1207-077), the IRS underscored how its examinations will home in on a once-favored strategy for monetizing stock gains while deferring capital gains taxes. In doing so, the Service reiterated its legal basis for why a variable prepaid forward contract (VPFC) that includes a share lending agreement (SLA) results in a currently taxable sale.
