Relationships Between Emotional Intelligence And Individual Workplace Performance, Tina Bauer Goldsmith
Relationships Between Emotional Intelligence And Individual Workplace Performance, Tina Bauer Goldsmith
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The intelligence quotients for intellectual ability or expertise in work environments are no longer leading factors in being hired or promoted (Cherniss & Goleman, 2001; Wolff, Druskat, Koman, & Messer, 2006). More recently, what appears to matter more importantly is competence for effective people management skills (Ashkanasy & Dashborough, 2003; Diggins, 2004; Douglas, Frink, & Ferris, 2004; Silberman, 2001; Wolff et al., 2006). One research question and five hypotheses were generated for the study to gain a better understanding of the relationships and factors contributing to emotional intelligence and individual workplace performance, and to elucidate which of the two emotional …

The objective of our study is to provide an exploratory model for forecasting sales take-off timing of a product in the context of multi-national markets. We evaluated the usefulness of key predictors such as multiple market information, product attributes, price, and sales for the forecasting of sales take-off timing by applying the suggested model to monthly sales data for PDP and LCD TV provided by a Korean electronics manufacturer. We have found some important results for global companies from the empirical analysis. Firstly, innovation coefficients obtained from sales data of a particular product in other markets can provide the most …

The purpose of this study is to identify the organizational characteristics that enhance CRM performances of a company. Based on a review of diverse definitions of CRM performance, this study examines the relationships among CRM performance measures and organizational characteristics. A questionnaire survey of 123 CRM managers of Korean companies was conducted to test the proposed research model, and a series of structural equation modeling identified the strong effects of organizational characteristics on CRM performance. It was found that top management commitment to CRM and a firm`s strategic readiness lead to high levels of CRM investment, which, in turn, enhance …

Considerably many numbers of studies on country-of-origin(hereafter COO) effects have been presented in international business and marketing areas. Recent studies have been included the effects of COO of manufacture, parts, and design, as well as the effects of brand origin, reflected by the accelerating convergent manufacture circumstances and increasingly competitive environments. Moderating constructs such as knowledge of product category and involvement as individual variables, have been also introduced and researched in various angles. In addition, how the effects of COO occur as processes is also argued in previous studies. This research has attempted to explain business corporation`s strategic decisions on …

Both companies and consumers are highly interested in on-line customer reviews which enable consumers to share their experience and knowledge about products. In this study, after classifying real reviews into context units and deriving categories, we analyzed differences between categories based on channel(manufacturers` homepage/ shopping mall), product attribute(search/experience) and price(high/low). The method to derive categories is based on roughly adopting constructs of ACSI model and elaborate and repetitive classification of real reviews. We set up the classification category with 3 levels. Level 1 consists of product and service, level 2 consists of function, design, price, purchase motive, suggestion/user-tip and recommendation/repurchase …

Consumer satisfaction/dissatisfaction is key determinant of brand loyalty and store patronage behavior. But the results of many customer satisfaction surveys implemented by department stores show that consumer satisfactions do not predict the actual patronage behaviors well. The main reason of these surprising results would be that the consumer satisfaction indexes do not include some important determinants of consumer satisfaction. Many customer satisfaction surveys mainly focus on the evaluation of functional benefits including product assortments, merchandise prices and locational convenience. Recent studies indicate that emotional/hedonic benefits strongly influence the consumer satisfaction, intention to repurchase and intention to revisit. Our study suggests …

The Supreme Court, sitting as a High Court of Justice, held as following:
It is doubtful whether the demand for public funding of new medications may find a hold in the hard core of the constitutional rights detailed in the Basic Law. Self-Organization": A New Metaphor To Understand The Interdependences Of The Organizations And Their Environments, Tarek Mohamed Ali
Self-Organization": A New Metaphor To Understand The Interdependences Of The Organizations And Their Environments, Tarek Mohamed Ali
Business Administration
Self-organization metaphors have recently emerged to enrich research on organizational environment in particular, with respect to the networking view that presents organizational environment as a complex web of interactions among groups of organizations. The network analysis promotes the group members’ sensitivity to the variety in environmental demands. In an attempt to clarify how self-organization enhances the group’s sensitivity, we propose the interdisciplinary autopoietic and habitus-field models. The proposed self-organization models allow portraying business organizations as networks of decision communications and integrated partners. Self-referential and self-reflexivity processes have been utilized by the models to guide a group of decision makers and …

Systems Perspectives And Levels Of Analysis: A Systemic Framework For Examining Organizational Interactions, Tarek Mohamed Ali
Business Administration
Up to now, systems theory is still a fundamental means that provides us with explanations about organizational interaction. The purpose of this paper is to develop a systemic framework that assists students of organizations concerning organizational interactions to assign an appropriate theoretical perspective and analytical level that help achieving their research objectives. Our methodology to portray such a guiding framework builds upon adapting Scott’s (2003) typology of organization theories. This is to classify traditional organization studies into distinctive systems perspectives according to their view of organizational interaction. We then use Blau’s (1957) typology of analytical levels to demonstrate how organization …

Uggla's Ugly Adventure: The All-Star Game, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Some will remember it as Uggla’s Ugly Adventure. Others will remember it for its record length in both innings and time. Some will remember it as nearly replicating the game of 2002 in Milwaukee when the managers ran out of players and someone (the Commissioner) had the good sense to stop the game. That was the infamous tie. Tuesday night it was beginning to look as though another tie, the third in All-Star History, was in the offing. In fact it was probably only an inning away.

How Management Style Moderates The Relationship Between Abusive Supervision And Workplace Deviance: An Uncertainty Management Theory Perspective, Stefan Thau, Rebecca J. Bennett, Marie S. Mitchell, Mary Beth Marrs

Based on uncertainty management theory [Lind, E. A., & Van den Bos, K., (2002). When fairness works: Toward a general theory of uncertainty management. In Staw, B. M., & Kramer, R. M. (Eds.), Research in organizational behavior (Vol. 24, pp. 181–223). Greenwich, CT: JAI Press.], two studies tested whether a management style depicting situational uncertainty moderates the relationship between abusive supervision and workplace deviance. Study 1, using survey data from 379 subordinates of various industries, found that the positive relationship between abusive supervision and organizational deviance was stronger when authoritarian management style was low (high situational uncertainty) rather than high …

Drucker's Insights On Market Orientation And Innovation: Implications For Emerging Areas In High-Technology Marketing, Shikhar Sarin, Jakki J. Mohr
Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 1954, Drucker boldly declared that organizations have only two basic functions, marketing and innovation. While true for any organization, this insight is particularly pertinent for technology-based businesses. The complicated environment surrounding high-tech companies creates a great need for sophisticated marketing, yet these companies continue to have under-developed competencies in marketing and in understanding customer needs. In its first two sections, this essay explores Drucker’s insights with respect to two particularly salient issues for high-tech companies: developing and implementing a market orientation, and sustained break-through innovations. We review Drucker’s insights and synthesize them with the scholarly research on these issues. …

On Sport and Society
We have arrived at that moment in mid-summer when baseball takes a break for the All-Star Game. I read the other day that Wednesday will be the only day of the year in which there is not a major professional sporting event taking place in the United States. That is a fact worth some thought and contemplation and may lead to some conclusions about overkill and saturation. Rather than that, I would like to make a few observations about the current baseball season which I have found to be strange and maybe even portentous.
Emotional And Behavioral Reactions To Social Undermining: A Closer Look At Perceived Offender Motives, Craig Crossley
Emotional And Behavioral Reactions To Social Undermining: A Closer Look At Perceived Offender Motives, Craig Crossley
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
This study examined how perceptions of underlying offender motives affect victims’ emotional and behavioral reactions toward their offender. Perceived offender motives of malice and greed were embedded in a cognition–emotion–behavior model based on theories of attribution, forgiveness and revenge, and tested in the context of social undermining. Findings suggested that victims distinguished between offender malice and greed, and that these attributions shaped subsequent emotional reactions, which in turn demonstrated independent relations with revenge, avoidance, and reconciliation.

Fathers: A Contemporary Perspective On Their Role In Child-Driven Materialism, Catriona Nash, Serge Basini
Conference proceedings
This paper explores the contemporary role of fathers in child-driven materialistic consumption, a little explored territory. Commencing with an exploration of the child consumer and their influence in personal and family spending, both of which have grown considerably over that last number of decades, followed by an analysis of changes in families and the role fathers now play in the aforementioned. It is also acknowledged that fathers have previously been ignored to a large extent in the majority of research studies concerning parent-child consumption and purchases. As such, valuable insights emerged through an interpretative framework utilised to explore this area. …

Follow The Leaders: You’Ve Created A Team To Solve A Problem; Here’S Some Advice: Don’T Put One Person In Charge, Craig L. Pearce
Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications
It’s a common corporate approach to a problem: Build a team of experts from different parts of the company and ask them to find a solution. But these teams could be a lot more effective if companies took one radical step: share leadership. This concept, of course, flies in the face of the traditional idea of how companies should operate. One person in charge, and the others follow. But in a team of specialists, one expert usually doesn’t have the know-how to understand all the facets of the job at hand. Instead, a better approach is to share the top …

The purpose of this study was to reevaluate the dominant influence of the theory of secularization in the management literature by exploring religious affiliation differences in the personal values of respondents. We used a large dataset drawn from a collection of 11 developed and emerging countries, and found significant cross-cultural religious affiliation differences among terminal and instrumental values of Catholics, Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, Atheists, and Hindus. Although personal values were differentiated by religious affiliations, there were also some similarities across the sample. Managerial implications are discussed.

An Empirical Investigation Of The Link Between Transaction Costs And Governance Structures Of Off-Shoring Programs, Michael Rawdan, Ramdas Chandra, Ruth Clarke
HCBE Faculty Presentations
This paper presents empirical findings regarding mode of governance and five dimensions of transaction costs. We discuss transaction cost economics in relation to the concept of outsourcing offshore, building hypotheses for testing. Starting with Coase (1937) academics have developed theory proposing that there are costs involved in organizing and managing transactions, both firm and market based. As firms vertically integrate or disaggregate in order to improve performance measured by profits, outsourcing has become more common as a way to take advantage of improved margins available in the market rather than in the traditional hierarchy. Outsourcing has quickly evolved to include …

Hedge Funds In A Volatile Market, Melvyn Teo
Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre
We show that relative to the first half of 2007, the volatility of hedge fund returns has doubled during the September 2007 to April 2008 period. At the same time, aggregate hedge fund returns have declined while exit rates have tripled. Commodity, macro, and, to a lesser extent, arbitrage funds outperformed during this period, while bottom-up funds underperformed. In Asia, funds engaging in less traditional strategies like arbitrage, event driven, fixed income, and distressed debt have emerged relatively unscathed. Our results also suggest that around the world, funds with headquarters near their investment markets, fewer assets under management, and higher …
