Upgrading Business Education, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

As emerging economies expand their activities in production, distribution and exchange and get more integrated with the international trading and financial system the internal management structure and processes of business organisations become more complex and demanding. Most of the emerging economies continue to remain mixed economies in which the roles of private and public sector have certainly evolved over time but both sectors still remain equally dominant. A third sector non-profit organisations (NPOs) is fast expanding and occupying space particularly in the delivery of public goods and services. Business education has become a popular vocation for a large number of …

Ethics In Publishing: Professional Development Workshop, James Davis, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

This PDW is all about “The Questions We Ask?” In fact, it is also about “The Questions We Should Ask!” With the fairly recent and highly publicized breaches of ethics among members of the business community, there is a need to re-examine specific strategies employed in all kinds of organizations. Many business faculty are comfortable teaching ethics in the classroom, but are we (as scholars and educators) appropriately challenging our own ethical practices? Ethics in publishing is one of the areas that many disciplines have recently been addressing. This workshop will provide faculty, administrators, and doctoral students the forum to …

Why Do People Engage In Social Computing? A Need Fulfillment Perspective, Vishal Sachdev Aug 2008

Why Do People Engage In Social Computing? A Need Fulfillment Perspective, Vishal Sachdev

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

With the trend towards social interaction over the Internet and the popularity of websites such as Myspace, Facebook and Youtube among others, practitioners and researchers are motivated to explain the sudden surge in user interest, in a phenomenon that we term, Social Computing. We seek to research the question: "Why do people engage in Social Computing?" The motivation is to determine some of the underlying human psychological factors that are driving this phenomenon. Towards this end, we propose a reformulation of the interactivity construct by suggesting new dimensions of interactivity that are unique to social computing. With this reformulated interactivity …

Applying Experimental Economics To Obesity In The Family Household, Mariah D. Ehmke, Travis Warziniack, Christiane Schroeter, Kari Morgan

Agribusiness

The objective of this study is to identify experimental economic tools that can be employed to explain the role of economic behavior in overweight and obesity in the household. We identify three economic experiments that can be used to understand how parent-child economic relationships relate to obesity. Loss aversion experiments are discussed as a tool to understand challenges some individuals face in achieving a healthy diet. Finally, testbed experiments are introduced as a means to test and understand new policies and incentives for better health at the household level.

Subprime Lending: Did It Lead To The Real Estate Boom And Bust?, Knowledge@Smu Aug 2008

Subprime Lending: Did It Lead To The Real Estate Boom And Bust?, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Is there a link between the availability of aggressive home loan lending and the price of homes? In a paper presented at the Far East and South Asian Meeting of the Econometric Society 2008, hosted by the Singapore Management University, Wharton professors Susan Wachter and Andrey Pavlov show that it is the fluctuation in the use of aggressive instruments which exacerbates the market downturns, and not the fact that such instruments generate higher default rates.

Entrepreneurship Education In The Third-Level Sector In Ireland, Thomas Cooney, Trudie Murray Aug 2008

Entrepreneurship Education In The Third-Level Sector In Ireland, Thomas Cooney, Trudie Murray

Reports

Entrepreneurship education is now a key part of the tertiary-level education landscape in many countries around the globe. Institutions are creating the type of learning environments that are conducive to encouraging and supporting student enterprise and graduate entrepreneurship. Going beyond notions of employability, entrepreneurship capacities enable graduates to create their own futures, exploit the opportunities that emerge in their complex and unpredictable worlds, and better contribute to economic development and well-being. This report demonstrates that Ireland is no exception. The evidence presented illustrates that there is no shortage of entrepreneurial activity across the island. Institutions are spreading provision outside of …

E-Transcript Web Services System Supporting Dynamic Conversion Between Xml And Edi, Myungjae Kwak '11, Woohyun Kang '14, Gondy Leroy, Samir Chatterjee

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

As XML becomes a standard for communications between distributed heterogeneous machines, many schools plan to implement Web Services systems using the XML e-transcript (electronic transcript) standard. We propose a framework that supports both XML e-transcript Web Services and existing EDI e-transcript systems. The framework uses the workflow engine to exploit the benefits of workflow management mechanisms. The workflow engine manages the e-transcript business process by enacting and completing the tasks and sub-processes within the main business process. We implemented the proposed framework by using various open source projects including Java, Eclipse, and Apache Software Foundation’s Web Services projects. Compared with …

Managing The American Tourist Experience In Ireland: An Emotional Context, Angela Wright

An Introduction To The Special Issue On Marketing Of High-Technology Products, Services And Innovations, Shikhar Sarin, Jakki Mohr

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

We are pleased to introduce this special issue on marketing of high-technology products and innovations. High-technology industries are distinguished by increasing turbulence, and time-and information-intensive environments (Mohr, Sengupta, & Slater, in press). Additionally, issues related to unique characteristics like network effects, dominant design, and technological standards increase complexity in identifying, implementing, and evaluating marketing strategies in such environments (Hills & Sarin, 2003). This special issue features papers that contribute theoretically, methodologically, and substantively to enhancing our understanding of marketing strategies in high-tech environments.
