Determinants Of Mobile Payments: An Empirical Analysis, Lei-Da Chen, Ravi Nath Jan 2008

Determinants Of Mobile Payments: An Empirical Analysis, Lei-Da Chen, Ravi Nath

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Success of mobile commerce hinges on the availability of methods of payment that are secure, ubiquitously available, globally accepted, and easy-to-use. Mobile payment (mPayment) entails making payments using mobile devices such as wireless handsets, personal digital assistants, and other radio frequency (RF) and near field communication (NFC) devices. While mPayment is still in its infancy, its acceptance is likely to increase considerably in the coming years. In the United States, the acceptance of mPayment lags behind that of Europe and Asia. In the U.S, many experts believe that the next step in mPayment evolution is the development of a single-device …

The Use Of Strategic Forces To Understand Competitive Advantages Provided By Information Technology, Gerald E. Evans, Clyde Neu

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Porter’s Five Forces model of business strategy is foundational to understanding strategic forces and the role of information technology in the larger strategic framework of an organization. The authors describe how information technology changes the strength and/or influence of the competitive forces in Porter’s model. Furthermore, understanding how specific technologies potentially change specific forces within Porter’s model is the foundation of IT strategy. This theoretical framework of strategic alignment is developed through cases demonstrating how specific technologies change the strategic forces within specific industries and how organizations should take advantage of these changing forces. Empirical evidence for the validity of …

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This study evaluates the construct validity of an end-user computing satisfaction scale in the context of the Korean culture. The structure and dimensionality, reliability and validity of an end-user computing satisfaction (EUCS) instrument were cross-validated using data obtained from 108 managers of Korean firms in the context of the end-user satisfaction with their office information system. The results of this study are generally consistent with previous findings regarding the measurement property of this instrument. However, Korean data also supports the five correlated first-order factors model. Managerial and research implications of the identified results are discussed.

Strategies, Contributions And Inhibitors Of Information Systems To Organizational Competitiveness: An Empirical Analysis Within The Caribbean, Stephen Louis, Ashley Braganza, Ray Hackney

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The study examines the impact of Information Systems (IS) through a consideration of improved competitiveness within a multi-business Caribbean firm. The methodology draws on a participant-observer approach for data collection and compares the application of IS by three business units within each of three organizations. It is argued that while there is already a substantial amount of research on IS effectiveness its value in the context of developing countries such as those of the Caribbean will be most significant. In this context firms are perceived to face more constraints than in developed countries so there is a need to explicitly …

Test For Infinite Variance In Stock Returns, Xian Ning Yan Jan 2008

Test For Infinite Variance In Stock Returns, Xian Ning Yan

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The existence of second order moment or the finite variance is a commonly used assumption in financial time series analysis. We examine the validation of this condition for main stock index return series by applying the extreme value theory. We compare the performances of the adaptive Hill's estimator and the Smith's estimator for the tail index using Monte Carlo simulations for both i.i.d data and dependent data. The simulation results show that the Hill's estimator with adaptive data-based truncation number performs better in both cases. It has not only smaller bias but also smaller MSE when the true tail index …

The Cross-Section Of Stock Return And Volatility, Hongchao Han Jan 2008

The Cross-Section Of Stock Return And Volatility, Hongchao Han

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

There has been increasing research on the cross-sectional relation between stock return and volatility. Conclusions are, however, mixed, partially because volatility or variance is modeled or parameterized in various ways. This paper, by using the Jiang and Tian (2005)'s model-free method, estimates daily option implied volatility for all US individual stocks from 1996:01 to 2006:04, and then employs this information to extract monthly volatilities and their idiosyncratic parts for cross-sectional regression analyses. We follow the Fama and French (1992) cross-sectional regression procedure and show that each of the 4 monthly measures of change of total volatility, total volatility, expected idiosyncratic …

The Impact Of Credit Watch And Bond Rating Changes On Abnormal Stock Returns For Non-Usa Domiciled Corporations, Benjamin Boon Ching Ee Jan 2008

The Impact Of Credit Watch And Bond Rating Changes On Abnormal Stock Returns For Non-Usa Domiciled Corporations, Benjamin Boon Ching Ee

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In this paper, we investigate whether credit watches and bond rating changes issued by Moodys' and S&P Credit Rating Agencies provide significant new information to investors for Non-USA domiciled corporations. We also examine whether the stock related cumulative abnormal return (CAR) differs according to the classification of the country of domicile (emerging or developed) of the corporation, and varies by state of the local stock market during the time of the rating event.
We find that on average, negative credit watches as well as long term rating downgrades result in significant stock related CAR for Non-USA domiciled 4 corporations. However, …

Parental Payment Abuse Within The Supplemental Security Income Program, Darlean Taylor-King Jan 2008

Parental Payment Abuse Within The Supplemental Security Income Program, Darlean Taylor-King

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Management of Social Security Administration (SSA) has been challenged by the phenomena of overpayments with its Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. Oversight authorities of SSA had expressed concerns about the overpayment abuse caused by parents as representative payees for disabled minor children. It was important to address this problem because the amount of overpayments prior to 1998 had caused integrity issues for management of SSA and increased federal debt from SSI claimants. The purpose of this study was to examine how management of SSA and the SSI program had responded to the concerns of the oversight authorities. Theoretical foundations for …

Impairment Practices Of Selected Publicly-Listed Companies In The Philippine Mining Industry, Florenz C. Tugas Jan 2008

Impairment Practices Of Selected Publicly-Listed Companies In The Philippine Mining Industry, Florenz C. Tugas

DLSU Business & Economics Review

As evidenced by new accounting standards, the advent of harmonization of accounting standards has caused a shift from historical basis accounting to fair value accounting. A bigger impact of this shift is manifested through revaluations and impairment. But recent events that concern complexities associated with the practical application of this standard have surfaced causing many companies to not full comply with its provisions. This study, therefore, attempts to investigate the compliance of ten selected companies belonging to the mining industry with provisions of PAS 36; and to determine existing impairment practices in the mining industry. Results reveal that selected companies …

Make Haste Or Waste: A Case Study On Predicting Bankruptcy Of Weyst Oyl Corporation Using Altman's Z-Score Model, Joy S. Rabo Jan 2008

Make Haste Or Waste: A Case Study On Predicting Bankruptcy Of Weyst Oyl Corporation Using Altman's Z-Score Model, Joy S. Rabo

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The motivation for research in corporate bankruptcy prediction is clear: the early detection of financial distress and the use of corrective measures are preferable to filing for protection under the bankruptcy law. This study analyzes if the application of Altman’s Z-score model will send a danger signal to the company management and contribute to the improvement of Weyst Oyl Corporation’s financial status. A used oil treating company established in 1978, Weyst Oyl Corporation, which has consistently been operating profitably for 17 years since its formation, decided in 1996 to acquire machinery which would increase plant capacity. It did so without …

Culture, Sovereignty, And Hollywood: Unesco And The Future Of Trade In Cultural Products, Christopher M. Bruner

Scholarly Works

On October 20, 2005, the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and CulturalOrganization (UNESCO) adopted a treaty - by a vote of 148-2, with 4 abstentions - that legitimates domestic legal measures aimed at the protection of local producers of cultural activities, goods and services. Opposed by the United States and Israel, the Convention represents a major diplomatic victory for Canada and France - its principal proponents - and a major blow to Hollywood and the United States, audiovisual products being among America's most lucrative exports. Both Canada and France, like many countries around the world, have long …

Risk Classification And Ratemaking In Insurance, Erin Conrad Jan 2008

Risk Classification And Ratemaking In Insurance, Erin Conrad

Honors Program Theses

Actuaries in insurance companies strive to put a price tag on future risk. They use a variety of analyses and models to accurately price insurance products. Models discussed in this paper include the pure premium method, the loss ratio method, the minimum bias procedure, and generalized linear models. Each of these pricing mechanisms are used to determine accurate and actuarially sound rates for insurance products. Competition in the industry forces companies to find more refined ways to predict the future costs of a risk. Classification systems allow companies to include a variety of rating variables so that each risk is …

Fundamental Stock Market Analysis Tool, Rakshith Varadaraju

Honors Program Theses

There are many sources for stock market information and an investor can tap into the television or online media to sync up with current market news. Popular sources are news channels such as CNBC or CNN who spend the better part of the day evaluating the stock market. The internet is filled with a wealth of data ranging from historical to current market information. Added to this information are countless websites that make predictions on what stocks should be bought or sold. The challenge with all of this information is to figure out which sources are actually valid and can …

Margin Trading, Overpricing, And Synchronization Risk, Sanjeev Bhojraj, Robert J. Bloomfield, William B. Tayler Jan 2008

Margin Trading, Overpricing, And Synchronization Risk, Sanjeev Bhojraj, Robert J. Bloomfield, William B. Tayler

Faculty Publications

We provide experimental evidence that relaxing margin restrictions to allow more short selling can exacerbate overpricing, even though it reduces equilibrium price levels. This is because smart-money traders initially profit more by front-running optimistic investor sentiment than by disciplining prices. When short selling is not possible, competitive pressures among arbitrageurs rapidly drive prices to the equilibrium. However, the risk of margin calls slows the convergence process, because arbitrageurs who sell short too early face substantial losses if they are unable to synchronize their trades with other arbitrageurs (as in Abreu and Brunnermeier. 2002. Journal of Financial Economics 66(2–3):341–60; 2003. Econometrica …

Investors Reactions To Competitive Actions Among Rivals: A Step Toward Strategic Asset Pricing Theory, Margaret Vardell Hughes Jan 2008

Investors Reactions To Competitive Actions Among Rivals: A Step Toward Strategic Asset Pricing Theory, Margaret Vardell Hughes

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation describes the development and empirical testing of strategic asset pricing theory (STRAPT). This explains the processes by which investors form ideas and judgments about a given firm‘s competitive strategy, and their ultimate belief about the impact these strategies will have on the firm‘s future stock price. My model explicitly accounts for information investors associate with dimensions of a firm‘s pattern of competitive actions, how investors process and interpret this information, and how they form opinions about the relationship between competitive strategy and future value of the firm‘s equity shares. Thus, by accounting for observed competitive behavior, my model …
