Determining The Impact Of Food Price And Income Changes On Body Weight, Christiane Schroeter, Jayson Lusk, Wallace Tyner

We develop a theoretical model to identify conditions under which price and income changes are most likely to change weight. Although it is intuitive that raising the price of high-calorie food will decrease consumption of such goods; it is not clear that such an outcome will actually reduce weight. Our empirical analysis demonstrates a case where a tax on food away from home, a food intake category blamed for much of the rise in obesity, could lead to an increase in body weight; a finding which emphasizes the need to employ economic modeling when developing public policy to reduce obesity.

Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) innovations have gained considerable attention in the last several years and attracted the attention of organizations across different industries. RFID technologies have found applications in diverse areas such as package tracking, inventory management, baggage handling, school attendance, and logistics. Prior literature on RFID innovations offers insights into the major benefits and challenges of RFID; the technological, organizational, and environmental factors that influence organizational adoption of RFID; and the experiences of specific companies. This paper tests whether stronger intellectual property protection is good for a country. It focuses on the overall effect of intellectual property protection on per capita economic growth. To measure the strength of intellectual property protection, I use the Ginarte-Park index. An education and an investment variable are also included in the models.

The models are based on simple linear regressions involving a cross-section of countries. The models consistently showed a negative correlation between intellectual property protection and per capita economic growth. This report is an overview of an economic development internship with the City of West Carrollton, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton, Ohio. The first section explores the City’s administrative roles and structure. The second section contains a Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat (S.W.O.T.) analysis, which evaluates the City’s current economic factors. Next, the Location Quotient (L.Q.) method quantifies the area’s industry makeup. Summarized is the SWOT analysis and Location Quotient in a listing of industry recommendations based on economic growth trends. This paper examines the shrimp anti-dumping case between the United States and six target countries in 2004. It focuses on the final announcement by the U.S. Department of Commerce that Vietnam, one of the six targets, dumped shrimp in the U.S. and suffered anti-dumping tariffs. The paper provides specific evidence about the shrimp market in the U.S. and Vietnam as well as broad analysis about the methods applied in the U.S. anti-dumping investigation. The final conclusion is that irrationalities still exist in the treatment by the U.S. with its different trade partners, without which Vietnam should not have been blamed …

This study analyzes the influence exerted by CEO characteristics (specifically, CEO stockholding percentages and CEO age) on research and development (R&D) expenditures in large American corporations over the twenty year period from 1986 to 2005. Using the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) to measure market share concentrations, and making specific reference to two Schumpeterian hypotheses on the correlation between R&D and increases in firm size, this study establishes a positive linear relationship between the dependent variable, R&D expenditure, and the independent variables of CEO stockholding, CEO age, firm size, and market share. In apparel industry, as domestic markets become overstored and/or mature, retailers consider international market involvement as a strategy for growth. Retailers have been successful in expansions to some countries, but not in others. This paper analyzes and evaluates JC Penney’s positioning and retailing strategies in domestic market, international expansion strategies, and factors such as culture influences on its international expansion strategies. This study presents a prototype for other retailers to follow when looking inside and outside national borders for expansion opportunities.

Over the past century Americans have significantly increased personal income yet decreased personal savings. The researchers in this study examine college students habits and beliefs concerning saving for retirement. To our knowledge there is no published data about retirement savings among Americans in this age group. We try to determine whether a student's retirement savings beliefs and habits can be predicted. We designed a model examining the student's risk-aversion level, financial background, general savings habits, financial literacy and attitudes toward saving. How Transformational Leadership Weaves Its Influence On Individual Job Performance: The Role Of Identification And Efficacy Beliefs, Fred O. Walumbwa, Bruce Avolio, Weichun Zhu

This study examined how transformational leadership directly and indirectly relates to supervisory-rated performance collected over time including 437 participants employed by 6 U.S. banking organizations in the midwest. Results revealed that one’s identification with his or her work unit, self-efficacy, and means efficacy were related to supervisor-rated performance. The effect of transformational leadership on rated performance was also mediated by the interaction of identification and means efficacy, as well as partially mediated by the interaction of self-efficacy and means efficacy. Implications for research, theory, and practice are discussed.

On The Same Page: The Value Of Paid And Volunteer Leaders Sharing Mental Models In Churches, Stephanie T. Solansky, Dennis Duchon, Donde Ashmos Plowman, Patricia G. Martínez

We examine the idea that mental models shared among paid and volunteer leaders are associated with improved financial performance in nonprofit organizations. Our empirical analysis of thirty-seven churches yields evidence that organizations are more effective if paid and volunteer leaders have a shared task mental model—that is, if they report similar conceptualizations of organizational goals and decision-making processes. These findings suggest that the extent of leaders’ agreement on organizational goals and the processes of how decisions are made matter for organizational performance. Conventional wisdom over the years and recent research findings have supported the importance of positivity in the workplace. However, to date, empirical analysis has not demonstrated potential added value of recently emerging positive state-like constructs such as psychological capital over the more established positive traits in predicting work attitudes and behaviors. This study of a sample of employees (N=336) from a broad cross section of organizations and jobs found that their state-like psychological capital is positively related to desired extra-role organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) and negatively with undesired organizational cynicism, intentions to quit and counterproductive workplace behaviors. Although the value of a supportive organizational climate has been recognized over the years, there is a need for better understanding of its relationship with employee outcomes. This study investigates whether the recently emerging core construct of positive psychological capital (consisting of hope, resilience, optimism, and efficacy) plays a role in mediating the effects of a supportive organizational climate with employee outcomes. Utilizing three diverse samples, results show that employees’ psychological capital is positively related to their performance, satisfaction, and commitment and a supportive climate is related to employees’ satisfaction and commitment. What follows is an analysis of the key macroeconomic trends in the six New England states. Using data publicly available in 2007, we examine trends in GDP growth, population, personal income and unemployment rate in each state. We provide a breakdown of each state by GDP category and provide an overall weighting by super sectors.

Emergence – the “coming into being” of new processes, structures and entities – is a consequential phenomenon that management scholars have been exploring since Babbage (1832) described the emergence of a division of labor, and Weber (1947) explained the emergence of bureaucratic hierarchy. Emergence is important and unique not only because it occurs at multiple levels within and across organizations, but also because emergence is the process that creates new “levels” of organizing (McKelvey & Lichtenstein, 2007).

This paper summarizes the common elements of mass customization (MC). It argues that MC should be viewed as a manufacturing management system that synergizes and integrates all the elements. Then, three factors, customer, technology, and organizational factors are identified. The moderating effects between implemented MC and improved performance are discussed.
