Measuring Economic Value Added (Eva): How Corporate Governance Works For Shareholders, Knowledge@Smu

Economic Value Added (EVA)” is a registered trademark of Stern Stewart & Co, a consulting firm which implements the EVA concept for large companies. Joel M. Stern, managing partner of Stern Stewart since its inception, is a recognised authority on corporate performance measurement and a pioneer and proponent of shareholder value. Stern recently delivered the Shaw Foundation Distinguished Faculty Lecture at the Singapore Management University on how to make corporate governance work for shareholders. This article explains why EVA as a way of measuring a firm's performance matters.

Evidence Of The Lack Of Effectiveness Of Low-Income Savings Incentives, Julia Camp, Teresa Stephenson, Stacy R. Wade

In view of the government’s propensity to develop programs to encourage savings, we examine a group of individuals to whom these programs are targeted: low- to moderate-income taxpayers. We show that saving for retirement is not a priority in the lives of these taxpayers. The low priority given to saving is often due to immediate necessary costs such as housing, food, and transportation. However, our study shows that even nonessential items and activities such as cable and internet services or travel are often considered more important than saving. Positive design leads to positive change in our society. In most cases, discussions focus on those who receive the design. However, positive design may also have a positive, but often over-looked, effect on the designers themselves. Learning about difficulties others face and developing solutions is a benefit that can contribute to individual designers’ education and general sense of well-being. Having a broader understanding of alternative views and lifestyles makes one a better person. In addition, positive design may benefit the entire field of information science by improving its ability to renew itself and attract new, young talent.

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

One surprisingly unstudied and little documented aspect of the present-day African market system– almost impossible to ignore when one is walking the streets of Kampala and bombarded by its presence– is second-hand clothing. This study investigates the history, systems, and perceptions of the second-hand clothing market in Kampala, Uganda. Combining an ethnographic analysis with historical research, this paper details how a western commodity is changed, both in meaning and form, and interacted with on a local level– adding to anthropological literature that analyzes how local cultures interact, and not passively react, to globalization.

Background: The successful utilization of the balanced scorecard (BSC) framework in health care has been demonstrated in the literature. Given these successes, a financially struggling hospital implemented a BSC framework intervention which attempted a culture change centered upon patient satisfaction which it hoped would translate to improved financial stability. Despite the evidence of BSC successes, the intervention, entitled Route 99, did not succeed in this hospital.

Purpose: This case study was conducted to identify learnable lessons and confounding factors associated with the successes and failures of Route 99. Metrics for patient satisfaction and employee satisfaction were examined as reflections of …

Different methods of selecting a leader for work groups have been shown to have significant effects on the group's overall performance (Henningsen, et al., 2004). It has been suggested that systematic selection of leadership is detrimental to a group's performance and cohesiveness in certain cases (Haslam et al., 1998). This has been supported by many studies (Haslam et al., 1998; Henningsen et. al., 2004). The objective was to conduct a broad survey of dairy management practices that have an effect on animal well-being. Dairies were visited during the fall and winter of 2005 and 2006 in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, and New York. Data were collected on 113 dairies on colostrum feeding, dehorning, tail-docking, euthanasia methods, producer statements about welfare, use of specialized calf-raising farms (custom), level of satisfaction with calf-raising by producers, and cow behavior. Calves were raised by the owner on 50.4% of dairies; 30.1% were raised on custom farms during the milk-feeding period, 18.6% were custom raised after weaning, and 1% …

This paper develops a gravity model of immigration. Tests of the model using panel data for 16 OECD countries for 1991–2000 confirm the model’s high explanatory power, and examples illustrate its usefulness for testing other hypothesized determinants of immigration.

This paper is a review of the literature that examines relationships between budgetary system characteristics and employee attitudes and behaviors. Articles were selected on the basis of several criteria: (a) they present studies that empirically examine the effect of one or more budgetary system characteristics on one or more attitudes and behaviors, (b) they were published in accounting and organizational behavior journals that are common outlets for empirical budgeting research, and (c) they were published in 1995 or later. The Target Case Study Program was developed as a new, innovative staffing strategy. In the program, Target presented a university class with one of 15 cases focused on real problems faced by Target. Students teams then created solutions, presented the solutions to Target executives who judged the teams' efforts and awarded significant scholarship money to the winning student team. The purpose of the program was to strengthen existing partnerships between the retailer and universities and to better inform students about employment at Target. This and more was accomplished. This dissertation comprises two essays on growth effects and opportunities experienced by companies and their implications for asset pricing models. In the first essay, I develop and test a model to explain the empirically observed value-growth stock return effect using real options theory. I simulate results from a real options model for two firm types. One type, the "value" firm, has a single growth opportunity. The other type, the "growth" firm, has infinitely repeated growth opportunities. Growth firms: (1) invest sooner, (2) pursue less lumpy investment paths, (3) have lower book-to-market ratios, and (4) generate lower rates of return than …
