To alleviate the negative effects of workplace unfairness and resulting conflict, organizations can take remedial action to atone for a perceived injustice. We argue that the effectiveness of organizational remedies may depend on the match between type of injustice perceived and type of remedy offered. Specifically, based on the multiple needs model of justice (Cropanzano, Byrne, Bobocel, & Rupp, 2001), we expect procedural injustice to be particularly associated with preference for instrumental remedies that address the need for control. On the other hand, interactional injustice should be particularly associated with preference for punitive remedies that address the need for meaning. …

The contingency theory of conflict management and current crisis management literature are integrated in this paper to examine how crisis has been communi-cated and managed by the Singapore government and what kinds of strategies arose during the various stages of the SARS crisis life-cycle. Findings show that the Singapore government played a predominant role in managing how its multiple publics perceived the crisis by extensive communication through the news media. The media, in turn, playing a supporting nation-building role, assisted the government's management and communication of the crisis. Extending current situation-based conceptualizations of crisis response, theauthors have developed a more universal and systemic approach to understandingthe role of emotions in crises. The authors’ Integrated Crisis Mapping (ICM)model is based on a public-based, emotion-driven perspective where differentcrises are mapped on two continua, the organization’s involvement with the crisisissue and primary public’s coping strategy. The initial test suggested theoreticalrigor in the model and found that publics involved in crises pertaining toreputational damage, technological breakdown, industrial matters, labor unrest,and regulation/legislation, are likely to feel anxious, angry, and sad. Recent evidence of criminal corporate behavior seems to indicate that efforts to develop more ethical business leaders by requiring courses on ethics in business schools has not worked. The creation and use of corporate ethics codes and “codes of conduct” has provided companies with a way to publicly demonstrate their commitment to good ethics, but by focusing their efforts on simply ensuring corporate “compliance” with such codes, the larger issues of right and wrong are often ignored. Banking Stability And Optimal Deposit Insurance Design, Yasmine Hamdi Moukhtar

This thesis focuses on deposit insurance schemes and their relationship to banking crisis. The empirical model used covers 55 developed and developing countries over the period 1970-1989. This study finds that banking crises are closely linked to adverse macroeconomics shocks like economic recessions, financial liberalization, capital account liberalization and short term capital flows, and currency depreciation. External vulnerability (expressed as the ratio of M2 to foreign reserve) is also found to be a key variable. The empirical results also show that deposit insurance increases the probability of banking crises, due to induced moral hazard and adverse selection.

Technology

The use of technology in the classroom has evolved from the most primitive to the widespread use of personal computers. One of the trends in technological advancements to enter the classroom is the use of robotics. The relationship between robotics and education spans many years. This paper details Papert’s Constructionism theory defining learning as being more effective when students are “constructing” or “doing” activities that are personally meaningful. Research includes assessment of experiences of this method of teaching Information Technology through robotics at such institutions as West Point, Reykjavik University and University of South Florida.
