As evidenced by Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005, disaster response efforts are hindered by a lack of coordination, poor information flows, and the inability of disaster response managers to validate and process relevant information and make decisions in a timely fashion. A number of factors contribute to current lackluster response efforts. Some are inherent to the complex, rapidly changing decision-making environments that characterize most disaster response settings. Others reflect systematic flaws in how decisions are made within the organizational hierarchies of the many agencies involved in a disaster response. Many western nations have experienced declining numbers of women in the information technology (IT) workforce (Trauth, Nielsen, & von Hellens, 2003). Between 1996 and 2002, women in the U.S. IT workforce declined from 41% to 34.9% (ITAA, 2003). This can hamper diversity and reduce the talent pool that can address needs of diverse end-users (Florida & Gates, 2002). Why do women choose IT careers or reject them? The central purpose of the present study was to examine how academic notions of leadership development compare and contrast with the theory of action that guides corporate leadership development initiatives. A secondary purpose was to analyze the process and potential extensions of the user-focused theory of action approach. Initial findings suggest that the user-focused theory of action approach is transferable to the case studied. In addition, an analysis of the leadership development literature and the Frontline Leadership Excellence System yielded a thought-provoking comparison of theory and practice. Counterfeiting is a global problem of enormous magnitude. Despite its obvious importance, relatively little attention has been paid to the management of counterfeiting. This paper considers the difficulties of measuring counterfeiting and provides evidence of the magnitude of the problem worldwide. The focus is on counterfeiting of privately produced goods and services, rather than the issue of the counterfeiting of currency per se, which is a somewhat different though related issue. A conceptual framework of the private and social costs and benefits of anti-counterfeiting measures is also provided. The Reputational Penalty For Aggressive Accounting: Earnings Restatements And Management Turnover, Hemang Desai, Chris E. Hogan, Michael S. Wilkins

In this paper we investigate the reputational penalties to managers of firms announcing earnings restatements. More specifically, we examine management turnover and the subsequent re-hiring of displaced managers at firms announcing earnings restatements during 1997 or 1998. In contrast to prior research (Beneish 1999 and Agrawal, Jaffe and Karpoff, 1999), which does not find increased turnover following GAAP violations or revelation of corporate fraud, we find that 60% of restating firms experience a turnover in at least one top manager within 24 months of the restatement compared to only 35% among age-, size- and industry-matched firms. Corporate teams are often established to complete assigned tasks as they would relate to planning, product development, process improvements, etc. There seems to be a lack of effective means for selecting team members based on objective criteria. Team-member selection is typically a process based only on the selector's judgment. While testing is a typical way to make hiring decisions, the same process is not used for creating teams.

In Israel\, an innovative program called Entrepreneur/ Executive in Residency (EIR) was initiated by venture capital firms to increase the probability that ICT startup/seed ventures will be funded. EIR programs help VCs to maintain 6%-10% of their portfolio (measured in invested dollars per year) in ventures in the startup/seed stage. This research\, based on qualitative interviews with Israeli VC executives and entrepreneurs who participate in EIR programs\, promotes understanding about how EIR programs work to increase the perceived confidence coefficient of the VC partners until it overcomes the “equity gap” that exists in assessing startup/seed entrepreneurial deals. This dissertation consists of three essays on corporate acquisitions, bidders’ liquidity and monitoring. In the first essay, “Acquisitions and Bidders’ Liquidity: Evidence from Successful and Unsuccessful Takeovers”, I examine the impact of corporate acquisitions on bidders’ liquidity. I find that liquidity improves for bidders that complete the takeovers but remains unchanged or decreases for unsuccessful bidders. Takeovers of public firms result in similar liquidity improvements as do takeovers of private firms. Takeovers that use stock as the method of payment have significantly more improvement in liquidity than takeovers that use cash as the payment method. These results suggest that changes …

This study identified the stakeholders of Louisiana plant commodity farmers and rated them in terms of importance. Findings of this study show that farmers/ranchers, LSU AgCenter Experiment Station Research personnel, family, consumers, farm labor and agriculture chemical, fertilizer and seed dealers are the most important stakeholders. The second aspect of this study was to discover the stakeholder perceptions of agricultural practices and their relationship to the environment. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to describe the lived experience of nurses’ who work with baccalaureate student nurses in the acute care clinical environment. Because of the nursing shortage nursing education is challenged with equipping a safe qualified workforce while preventing or reducing student attrition. Students may choose to leave the profession or receive less than optimal learning experiences when exposed to negative socialization behaviors of nurses while in the clinical environment. This dissertation explores theoretical links among interpersonal, perceptual, and situational variables and sensitivity about being the target of threatening upward comparisons (STTUC) within a workplace setting. It also investigates affective and behavioral responses outperformers may enact to decrease effects thought to be associated with STTUC. Because of the novelty of investigating STTUC in a field sample, the actual nature of the relationships among STTUC and the focal study variables were examined in multiple ways. The impact of international trade on a firm’s degree of specialization and income distribution is studied in a general equilibrium framework in which firms engage in oligopolistic competition. International trade increases a firm’s degree of specialization, but the number of goods a country produces may not change. Trade may lower the welfare of the scarce factor of production. Sufficient conditions for a country’s welfare to increase with trade are provided.

The above item was given in the late 1930s to German employees to measure something else other than cognitive ability (e.g., planning and organizing). It illustrates that situational judgment tests (SJTs) have been used outside the United States for quite sometime. Early international applications of SJTs can also be found in the so-called cultural assimilators in cross-cultural training programs (Bhawuk&Brislin,2000). In these cultural assimilators, future expatriates are presented with written situations of an expatriate interacting with a host national and are asked to indicate the most effective response alternative.

In a series of studies we examine the relationship between perceptual fluency, attitudes and their accessibility and choice from a limited set of brands. We hypothesize that under these conditions, brand choice is a two-stage process. The first stage is a recognition stage where certain brands will "stand out" in the environment. The second stage is a choice stage, where consumers use information about the brands, which is stored in memory to make a choice.

This dissertation consists of three studies related to corporate governance of equity mutual funds in a framework of relations between the three closely interrelated actors of mutual fund industry.
