Growth Intentions Of Owner-Managers Of Young Microfirms, Rolland Lebrasseur, Huguette Blanco, John L. Dodge

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

A survey of young microfirms was conducted to investigate their growth intentions. The findings confirm the distinct profiles of four types of firms categorized on the basis of current and future employment: Lifestyler, Entrepreneur, Manager, and Mover. They differ in terms of the owner’s perceptions of the desirability and practicality of growing their firm, and with respect to the moderating variables of industry affiliation, business location, and investment level. Research issues and service implications for business support agencies are identified.

The Embedded Entrepreneur: Recognizing The Strength Of Ethnic Social Ties, Ed Chung, Kim Whalen Jan 2006

The Embedded Entrepreneur: Recognizing The Strength Of Ethnic Social Ties, Ed Chung, Kim Whalen

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This article is premised on the idea that social networks represent an important, but often overlooked, unit of analysis in management and entrepreneurship studies. The concept of embeddedness, emphasizing the significance of social relationships, is of particular relevance as more and more frequently minorities and immigrants engage in small businessownership. This article borrows from the ethnicity and social network traditions, and offers that an analysis of the ethnic homogeneity of an entrepreneur’s strong and weak social ties would be fruitful in gauging entrepreneurial success.

The Often-Neglected Term In The Entrepreneurial Equation—The Purchase Order, Deaver Brown, Joseph E. Levangie Jan 2006

The Often-Neglected Term In The Entrepreneurial Equation—The Purchase Order, Deaver Brown, Joseph E. Levangie

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Many entrepreneurs are enthralled with their company’s technologies, products and potential markets. Invariably these emerging ventures present bedazzling business plans with industry-wise vernacular, detailed market research, and sophisticated financial spreadsheets. They often flaunt their “optimized business models.” Investors, however, typically want to know when and how the sales will start meeting the Plan. “Where’s the purchase order?” is the refrain. In this article, our “Practitioner’s Corner” associate editor Joe Levangie collaborates with a long-time colleague, Deaver Brown, to address how businesses should “make sales happen.” Levangie warns that Brown’s elitist education (Choate, Harvard College, Harvard Business School) should not be …

Simplified Data Analytics For The Accurate Evaluation Of A New Venture’S Market Potential, Michael D. Mattei, Stephen Hellebusch Jan 2006

Simplified Data Analytics For The Accurate Evaluation Of A New Venture’S Market Potential, Michael D. Mattei, Stephen Hellebusch

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This article examines the creation of an accurate market projection designed with easy-to-use, cost-effective data analytic techniques. Many of the techniques explored are derived from the subdisciplines of decision support and data warehousing found in the information technology arena. Two significant contributions are presented: a simple mathematical technique that eliminates the need for heuristics, and the simplification of the process to the point where no computer or sophisticated statistical analysis is needed.

Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School Of Business, Institute For Entrepreneurship: A Concept Paper That Became A Reality, Miles K. Davis

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

The Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business at Shenandoah University engaged in an intense planning process in the fall of 2004. In addition to clarifying its mission and strategic directions, the Byrd School clearly articulated its vision: to become recognized as a provider of individualized business education driven by entrepreneurial thinking, global understanding, and ethical practice. The development of the Institute for Entrepreneurship described in this article is a critical step in actualizing this vision.

Entrepreneurial Financing—Alternatives For Raising Capital, Paul Broude, Joseph E. Levangie Jan 2006

Entrepreneurial Financing—Alternatives For Raising Capital, Paul Broude, Joseph E. Levangie

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Most entrepreneurs are continually concerned about their finances. Their companies perhaps not yet profitable, they may have a fear of “running out of dry powder.” These entrepreneurs often have fallen in love with their company’s technologies, products, and potential markets, but they require more resources. Invariably these emerging ventures shroud their fear of the grueling capital raising marathon by presenting voluminous business plans to potential investors. They often flaunt their “optimized business models.” Investors, however, typically want to know why the potential investment is such a good deal. The entrepreneur often wants guidance regarding what to say to whom in …

The Sales Managers' Implicit Personality Theory And Leadership Variables, Gordon Gunn Mosley

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of sales managers' implicit personality theory and various leadership variables provided to salespeople by their sales managers. Several bodies of literature were reviewed for this study from the educational psychology, management, leadership, and marketing/sales disciplines. More specifically, this study addressed the following research questions: (1) What effect does sales managers' implicit personality theory have on the nature of the feedback they provide to their salespeople? (2) What effect does sales managers' implicit personality theory have of the transformational leadership they provide to their salespeople? (3) What effect does sales managers' …

An Exploratory Study Of The Influence Of Life Management Strategies On Job Satisfaction And Job Performance In A Personal Selling Context, Dheeraj Sharma Jan 2006

An Exploratory Study Of The Influence Of Life Management Strategies On Job Satisfaction And Job Performance In A Personal Selling Context, Dheeraj Sharma

Doctoral Dissertations

Extant literature on goal oriented behaviors suggests that individual goal orientation is an important determinant of a salesperson's job satisfaction and job performance. However, the present conceptualization of goal orientation suffers from flawed paradigmatic structure. There are two major disparate paradigms of goal orientation in the extant literature. The first paradigm views goal orientation as a stable personality trait and the second paradigm views it as contextually driven phenomenon. The present study proffers a new approach of conceptualizing individual goal orientation, by introducing the meta-model of Life Management Strategies (Baltes and Baltes, 1998; Freund and Baltes, 1998) in the personal …

The Impact Of Efficacy On Work Attitudes Across Cultures, Fred Luthans, Weichun Zhu, Bruce Avolio Jan 2006

The Impact Of Efficacy On Work Attitudes Across Cultures, Fred Luthans, Weichun Zhu, Bruce Avolio

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

To answer the call for more cross-cultural research, this study analyzed the efficacy and work attitudes of employee samples from the U.S. and Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand). The results showed that across these two samples, general efficacy had a significant positive relationship with organizational commitment and a significant negative relationship with intention to turnover. Further analysis also indicated that job satisfaction mediated the relationship between general efficacy and organizational commitment and intention to quit in the U.S. sample. The relationship between general efficacy and organizational commitment was stronger in the U.S. than in the three combined countries sampled …

An Exploratory Study Of Consumer Adoption Of Online Shopping: Mediating Effect Of Online Purchase Intention, Songpol Kulviwat, Ramendra Thakur, Chiquan Guo

Marketing Faculty Publications

An exploratory study was conducted to investigate consumer adoption of online purchase using a survey data set. Based upon the theory of innovation and self-efficacy theory, risk aversion, online proficiency, shopping convenience, and product choice variety were proposed to influence consumer intention to shop online, which, in turn, affects online purchases. Results of regression analyses revealed that all but shopping convenience were significant predictors of consumer intention to purchase online. In addition, consumer intention directly determines consumer purchases online. Finally, consumer intention to purchase online mediates the relationship of risk aversion, shopping convenience, and product choice variety to online shopping. …

Institutions And Concentration, Todd Mitton Jan 2006

Institutions And Concentration, Todd Mitton

Faculty Publications

In a new dataset of 1.3 million firms in 155 countries, I establish a number of regularities in cross-country differences in economic concentration. Concentration of sales and employment is substantially higher in smaller countries and in less-developed countries; these two factors alone explain roughly half the cross-country variation in concentration. Nevertheless, a number of institutional factors offer additional explanatory power for concentration. Concentration is higher in countries with higher entry costs for new firms, in countries with weaker antitrust policy, in countries with less control of corruption, in countries with weaker rule of law, and in countries with more burdensome …

Infusion Of Information Systems In The Stockbroking Sector, Hosein Gharavi Jan 2006

Infusion Of Information Systems In The Stockbroking Sector, Hosein Gharavi

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The Australian stockbroking sector has been at the forefront of integrating information systems (IS) in its daily operations. Trade and clearance account for a large percentage of processes undertaken in a brokerage house. Upon integration of IS, the trade and clearance processes of the sector were centralised and the institutional arrangements of the sector were transformed. Centralisation also meant that this large percentage of processes was directly controlled by the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC). Although the integration of IS was intended to rationalise the trading regime and make the process of brokerage …

Differing Cultural Perceptions Regarding The Appropriate Use Of Workplace Computer Technologies, Heidi Perreault, Nancy Keith Jan 2006

Differing Cultural Perceptions Regarding The Appropriate Use Of Workplace Computer Technologies, Heidi Perreault, Nancy Keith

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This study examined differences in perceptions of U.S. and international college students regarding appropriate use of computers. Ten common inappropriate computer-use behaviors were presented to students. Only two of the ten behaviors were identified by the students as being unacceptable. When compared by geographic region, the U.S. students rated four of the actions as being less acceptable than did the international students. Work experience had minimal influence on the students’ perceptions. The results indicate that regardless of nationality or previous work experience, students lack understanding of the appropriate use of workplace computer technologies. The results reinforce the need for corporations …

Sellers In Online Auction Markets: Introducing A Feedback-Based Classification, Radha Appan, Zhangxi Lin Jan 2006

Sellers In Online Auction Markets: Introducing A Feedback-Based Classification, Radha Appan, Zhangxi Lin

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Trading in the online consumer-to-consumer (C2C) auction market necessitates buyers and sellers to engage in transactions with anonymous counterparts. The sequence of paying first and then taking delivery introduces a great amount of risk for potential buyers. In order to assist buyers in dealing with this risk, online auction markets (OAMs) are employing reputation-scoring systems and traders can be classified in terms of their online reputation scores. A review of the literature suggests a conspicuous absence of the study on any standard classification of sellers in OAMs. Lack of such a classification hinders systematic research and theory development. Therefore, a …

The Impact Of Masking Of Persuasive Intent On Persuasive Message Effectiveness, Christina Simmers Rodrigue Jan 2006

The Impact Of Masking Of Persuasive Intent On Persuasive Message Effectiveness, Christina Simmers Rodrigue

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The decreased dependency of marketing managers on traditional message forms (i.e., commercials) has increased the use of nontraditional message forms (i.e., product placement) in marketing communication. These newer message forms are unique because their persuasive intent is concealed by the presentation method and, therefore, may be processed differently than the traditional message forms. Consequently, this paper examines three major issues that arise out of the integration of nontraditional message forms into marketing communication, including (1) incorporating nontraditional message forms into the traditional persuasion literature, (2) introducing a new persuasion element (termed masking of persuasive intent) and its role in the …

Using The Fasb's Qualitative Characteristics In Earnings Quality Measures, Abhijit Barua Jan 2006

Using The Fasb's Qualitative Characteristics In Earnings Quality Measures, Abhijit Barua

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, I develop a measure of earnings quality by using qualitative characteristics of financial statement information specified in the Statement of Financial Accounting Concepts (SFAC) No. 2 (FASB 1980). I derive a summary measure of earnings quality by applying factor analysis on fifteen variables representing different components of two primary dimensions of earnings quality: relevance and reliability. I then test the validity of the earnings quality construct by examining whether the construct reflects decision usefulness that is operationalized in two ways: value relevance and cost of capital analyses. I provide empirical evidence suggesting that the earnings quality construct …

The Impact Of The Louisiana Master Gardener Program On The Perceived And Actual Horticultural Knowlede Levels Of Program Participants, Bobby Hugh Fletcher Jan 2006

The Impact Of The Louisiana Master Gardener Program On The Perceived And Actual Horticultural Knowlede Levels Of Program Participants, Bobby Hugh Fletcher

There is a need for research-based horticultural information to be provided …

Factors Which Influence Client Satisfaction With The Services Of Community Development Corporations, Shanta Harrison-Proctor Jan 2006

Factors Which Influence Client Satisfaction With The Services Of Community Development Corporations, Shanta Harrison-Proctor

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to determine factors which influence client satisfaction with the services of community development corporations (CDCs) in metropolitan regions of Louisiana. The CDCs were evaluated based on five specific criteria: housing, social services, workforce development, educational enrichment, and community outreach. The objectives addressed were: description of clients, levels of client satisfaction, and relationships between satisfaction and selected demographic characteristics. The instrument used in this study was a researcher-designed survey questionnaire used to collect client information. It was comprised of two sections – demographics and client satisfaction. The target population for this study was adult …

How Voice Affects Perceptions Of Relationship Wih Adults, Ownership, And Engagement In Youth, Melissa D. Wade Cater Jan 2006

How Voice Affects Perceptions Of Relationship Wih Adults, Ownership, And Engagement In Youth, Melissa D. Wade Cater

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if youth voice affects the ownership and engagement experienced by youth in a county 4-H program. For the treatment group, a youth-led approach was used where "having a voice" included youth sharing decision-making power with the adults in the program. The comparison group consisted of 4-H members in three other clubs in the county. These youth experienced an adult-led approach where the decisions about the club programming were made strictly by the adults. The Youth Voice Survey instrument was developed to assess youths' perceptions of ownership, engagement, and relationship with adults at …

A New Theory And Measure Of Ethical Work Climate: The Psychological Process Model (Ppm) And The Ethical Climate Index (Eci), Anke Arnaud Jan 2006

A New Theory And Measure Of Ethical Work Climate: The Psychological Process Model (Ppm) And The Ethical Climate Index (Eci), Anke Arnaud

Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach

With this dissertation I developed a new theory and measure of ethical work climate (EWC). Currently, there exists one dominant theory and measure of EWC developed by Victor and Cullen (1988, 1987). Even though researchers have identified problems with this theory, such as inconsistencies with regard to its limited theoretical scope and troubling psychometric properties, it is the most widely utilized framework for conceptualizing and testing EWC. Therefore, I propose to develop an improved theory and measure of EWC, one capable of addressing some of the principle shortcomings of earlier efforts. Building on Rest’s (1986, 1979) “Four-Component” model of individual-level …
