With businesses struggling for resources during economic downturns, traditional business student internships were becoming more difficult to develop. One business school extended its experiential learning opportunities with specific management projects in community small business, healthcare, education, and non-profit organizations. The on-campus service learning center provided project development, logistical support, and assessment for forty-five business students to participate in 38 on-site, Human Resource Management projects. Means and standard deviations for self-report, end-of-semester surveys were determined for six Likert-scale items that measured the students? satisfaction with the project experience, and percentages were calculated of students who indicated specific personal and intellectual benefits …

Population Growth And Trade Policies In The Philippines: A General Equilibrium Analysis, Luz C. Stenberg

The paper attempts to show using a computable general equilibrium (CGE) framework the relative effects of population growth and trade policies on economic growth, employment and deforestation in the Philippines. A static CGE model based on ORANI with an appended sub-forestry model is employed in the analysis. The results show that (domestic) population per se would not significantly increase deforestation. Whilst, export taxes are ineffective tools in reducing deforestation, trade liberalisation policies are beneficial to the economy as a whole.

Consumers increasingly look to the Internet for health information, but available resources are too difficult for the majority to understand. Interactive tables of contents (TOC) can help consumers access health information by providing an easy to understand structure. Using natural language processing and the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS), we have automatically generated TOCs for consumer health information. The TOC are categorized according to consumer-friendly labels for the UMLS semantic types and semantic groups. Categorizing phrases by semantic types is significantly more correct and relevant. This paper investigates the economic determinants of restatements, focusing on companies that were the object of an SEC Enforcement Action. A sample of 30 restatement firms is matched with 30 non-restatement firms in the same industry and same business and with a similar size as measured by assets. It was found that the use of a Big 5 audit firm reduces the incidence of restatement. More specifically, use of Ernst & Young as a Big 5 audit firm significantly reduces the possibility of restatement. Quota management systems are now in place for the New Zealand, Tasmanian and South Australian rock lobster fisheries. New Zealand was the first to move to QMS (1989), followed by the Southern Zone of South Australia (1993), Tasmania (1998) and Northern Zone South Australia (2001). As part of a review of the system of management used for the West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery, a West Australian delegation visited New Zealand, Tasmania and South Australia in 2004 to learn more about the management systems in place for their respective rock lobster fisheries.

Sixty-eight 'short day' selections from the Australian Temperate breeding program were compared in a trial planting on a commercial property at Wanneroo from a mid May planting. Thirty-three of the selections were derived from crosses made in 2003 (new Stage 4 selections) and twenty-nine were from crosses made between 1998 and 2002 (Intermediate Stages 5 and 6). In addition, three advanced selections were compared in large plots of 1,000-1 ,500 plants together with three commercial control cultivars, Gaviota, Camino Real and Kiewa. These selections were 'fast tracked' for future commercialisation by being selected for bulking up in September 2004.

Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy In Central Asian Transition Economies: Quantitative And Qualitative Analyses, Fred Luthans, Elina Sharlezdvna Ibrayeva

In both quantitative and qualitative field studies, the self-efficacy of entrepreneurs in the transition economies of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan is examined. Using a social cognitive framework, the complex interaction among these entrepreneurs’ (N=133) personal characteristics, environment, and self-efficacy is analyzed by structural equation modeling. Their self-efficacy was found to have a direct and mediating impact on performance. Another sample of entrepreneurs from these countries (N=239) qualitatively assessed what they actually do in their day-to-day activities. The findings from these two studies contribute to better understanding and have implications for successful entrepreneurial practice in countries undergoing the difficult process of transition …

Open innovation is a powerful framework encompassing the generation, capture, and employment of intellectual property at the firm level. We identify three fundamental challenges for firms in applying the concept of open innovation: finding creative ways to exploit internal innovation, incorporating external innovation into internal development, and motivating outsiders to supply an ongoing stream of external innovations. This latter challenge involves a paradox, why would firms spend money on R&D efforts if the results of these efforts are available to rival firms? In many ways, Campbell and Fiske’s (1959) article on multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) approaches to construct validity has stood like a Platonic ideal for personality psychologists since its publication. In the ideal study, and scientific world, our constructs should converge in a robust and coherent fashion across diverse methods. Moreover, we should all aspire to use multiple methods in both validating our measures and in investigating our ideas. Interestingly, that Platonic ideal is not realized as often as expected. Using spreadsheet-based simulation, the USGA Handicap Index was shown to be an unfair statistic in one-on-one and team competition in two common types of scoring: stroke and match play. Experiments were developed in which players of different abilities (based on central tendency and variation) competed against each other over many trials. The results showed that in some situations, based on identifiable differences in abilities, some players won/lost a disproportionate (unfair) number of times. The causes of unfairness are different in one-on-one and team play. Alternative procedures were proposed that proved to reduce the unfairness of the index.

This study considers the impact of adding real estate investment trust (REIT) stocks to stock portfolios in varying proportions under different economic conditions. To the extent real estate offers diversification benefits to stock market investors, REITs may serve as a practical alterative to the relatively high trading costs of direct equity positions in real estate investments. The results suggest that the inclusion of securitized real estate enhances portfolio performance during positive economic climates, but diminishes portfolio performance during negative economic climates.

Personality Approach To Person-Organization Fit: Applying Holland's Theory Of Vocational Choice At The Organizational Level, G. Stoney Alder

Researchers frequently recommend that organizations consider person-organization fit when making hiring decisions. The purpose of this paper is three fold. First, the paper provides a review of existing research on person-organization fit. This review concludes that several limitations hinder the usefulness of current approaches to person-organization fit. Second, this paper seeks to address these limitations through a conceptual analysis that integrates research on vocational choice with person-organization fit research. The result is an approach to person-organization fit that may be more readily applied by organizations. Finally, the paper suggests a process for empirically testing the proposed approach to person-organization fit.
