On Sport and Society

I have a friend who was at Stanford at the same time as John Elway. He too was an athlete but not in one of the high profile money sports. Over the years he has come to detest John Elway especially the Denver quarterback's success. My friend claims that with every million dollars and every big game victory, Elway is making him look bad. My friend is yet to win a big game or make a million, although he continues to have hope for the lottery.

What Do College Seniors Know About Economics?, William Walstad, Sam Allgood

If college seniors who have taken an economics course were asked questions that test their knowledge of basic economics, what would the results show? Would seniors give correct answers to most questions, or would they show significant deficiencies? Students are exposed to many ideas during their undergraduate education, so one would not expect them to retain all of the economic content they were taught, but one would hope that they would retain at least a knowledge of basic economics. This study investigates whether that is the case.

Stream Channel And Vegetation Responses To Late Spring Cattle Grazing, Warren P. Clary

Ecological Impacts of Animal Agriculture Collection

A 10-year riparian grazing study was conducted on a cold, mountain meadow riparian system in central Idaho in response to cattle grazing-salmonid fisheries conflicts. Six pastures were established along Stanley Creek to study the effects on riparian habitat of no grazing, light grazing (20-25% utilization), and medium grazing (35-50%) during late June. Stream channels narrowed, stream width-depth ratios were reduced, and channel bottom embeddedness decreased under all 3 grazing treatments as the area responded to changes from heavier historic grazing use. Streambank stability increased and streamside willow communities (Salix spp. L.) increased in both height and cover under all 3 …

Gascoyne has seen a series of rapid developments in recreational fisheries management, starting with the introduction of state-wide bag limits in 1991; followed by area specific controls at Ningaloo in 1992; landing limits in Exmouth Gulf in 1993; strict controls on the take of pink snapper in Shark Bay’s inner gulfs in 1997; new bag limits for Shark Bay in 1998; and the introduction of a management system for the charter and aquatic tour industry in 1999. This applied research project focused on hospital mergers and the combination of "business" and "people" factors that allow full potential to be achieved. The business factors included finances and the "people" factors related to culture and practices. We sought to examine whether or not both factors were necessary in order for the merger to reach full potential. "Merger" was defined as the creation of a single entity out of two in which there is movement of services or staff. A "merger stabilization model" was developed that predicted potential merger synergy as dependent upon "people" fit and "business" fit. Four merged …

The Quest For Sustainable Leadership: The Importance Of Connecting Leadership Principles To Concepts Of Organizational Sustainability, Eric S. Harter

This study investigates the possible link between leadership and organizational sustainability. The primary focus is to determine if leadership is a distinguishing variable associated with organizational sustainability. This study was quantitative in design and used The Leadership Profile (TLP) (Sashkin & Rosenbach, 1995, 1996, 1997) to measure leadership. The data used for this study to measure leadership was collected through the use of a mailed survey. The mailed survey yielded a 180-degree leadership assessment. The sample consisted primarily of chief executive officers and their senior executive subordinates of multinational or national healthcare firms. A purposive and nonrandom selection was completed …
